  • Developments in power electronics have enabled the widespread application of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) inverters, notably for connecting renewable systems to the grid. This study demonstrates that a high-quality power can be achieved using a stand-alone inverter, whereby the comparison between the power quality of the stand-alone inverter with battery storage (off-grid) and the power quality of the utility network is presented. Multi-loop control techniques for a single phase stand-alone inverter are used. A capacitor current control is used to give active damping and enhance the transient and steady state inverter performance. A capacitor current control is cheaper than the inductor current control, where a small current sensing resistor is used. The output voltage control is used to improve the system performance and also control the output voltage. The inner control loop uses a proportional gain current controller and the outer loop is implemented using internal model control proportional-integral-derivative to ensure stability. The optimal controls are achieved by using the Sisotool tool in MATLAB/Simulink. The outcome of the control scheme of the numerical model of the stand-alone inverter has a smooth and good dynamic performance, but also a strong robustness to load variations. The numerical model of the stand-alone inverter and its power quality are presented, and the power quality is shown to meet the IEEE 519-2014. Furthermore, the power quality of the off-grid system is measured experimentally and compared with the grid power, showing power quality of off-grid system to be better than that of the utility network.

  • The AC electrified railway systems have the power quality problems such as the harmonic distortion, the reactive power and the three-phase imbalance because of the electrical load characteristics of locomotives, which are non-linear single-phase. These power quality problems have a bad effect on not only AC electrified railway systems but also other electric systems connected together. The RPQC (railway power quality conditioner) can compensate such power quality problems in the AC electrified railway systems. In this paper, a novel RPQC control method based on SRF (synchronous-reference-frame) control is proposed. The proposed RPQC control method can compensate effectively the harmonic currents, the reactive power and the load imbalance. The validity and the effectiveness of the proposed RPQC control method are illustrated through the simulations.

  • This paper describes a power quality analysis of a photovoltaic generating systems. Prior to the power measurement, domestic and foreign codes related to the photovoltaic generating systems were briefly summarized. After constructing about 5 kW photovoltaic systems, input/output voltages and currents were measured to compare and analyze the power quality by the module type. Based on the measured values, a couple of factors such as active power, power factor, total harmonic distortion(THD) was calculated and analyzed.

  • This paper proposes a small low-cost power quality compensator to be installed at the electricity supply inlet of residential customer. The compensator is composed of a single-phase active power filter with a simple controller using analog electronics, which can correct the power factor and damp out the harmonics. The operation and performance of proposed compensator was verified through simulations with PSCAD/EMTDC and experimental works with hardware prototype. The proposed compensator can offer reduction of power loss and improvement of power quality to the residential customer.

  • A meaning of power quality has changed, which affects on an environmental change of existing electricity supply markets. Today, it should take both consumers and suppliers into consideration to develop information and communication technology and to increase the use of power and electronic equipments. As a result, it is necessary to develop a system to monitor power quality and to display data. In this paper, a system, as a power quality monitoring equipment, which can use protective replays with progress of microprocessor technology and provide information in the intranet/internet circumstances using web-based architecture is described.

  • Large capacity reactive power compensation and harmonic control in the low-voltage grid of an enterprise, are important technical means to improve power quality and reduce power loss. In this paper, the principle of an efficient power quality controller is analyzed. Then, key application technologies of the HPQC which would influence the performances of the HPQC are studied. Based on an analysis of the harmonic shunt problem, a frequency dividing control strategy of the HPQC continuous subsystem is proposed. A parameter design method of the HPQC discrete subsystem and its installation method are also proposed to ensure the system compensation effect. HPQC systems have been designed for a copper foil plant. The effectiveness of this paper has been verified by the simulation and application results.

  • This paper deals with a powerful countermeasure for power quality problems caused by the operation of electrical arc furnace in bulk power systems. The rapid active load fluctuations of electrical arc furnace could produce several problems such as voltage flicker and active power oscillations. The typical methods using only the reactive power compensation have their own limitation in solving the power quality problems caused by active load variations. The coordination of both active and reactive power compensation is required to solve the power quality problems. This paper focuses on the impacts and the dynamic phenomena caused by the active load fluctuation. This paper proposes the optimal algorithm for the active power compensation based on the function of 1(n ratio and the concepts for the active power compensation. The results from a case study show that the proposed methods can be a practical tool for the power quality problems in power systems.

  • As the developing of industry, the nonlinear equipments as inverter, converter, SMPS(Switching Mode Power Supply) and motor have been increased. But the sensitive electronic loads to the power quality, such as computers and other electronic equipments, have been spreaded out very fast. Thus, the power quality(PQ) problems and the real time power quality monitering(PQM) are one of the important issues in industry and building area for the intelligent control of the systems. One of them, PQM using PLC(Power Line Communication) have good merits that can send and receive the PQ information without any new network line. This paper presents the PQM hardware and software to monitor the PQ information by using PLC that meets the categories of IEEE Std. 1159.
