Presented are the formation of iron oxide layers on evaporator tubes in an actual fossil power plant operated under all volatile treatment (AVT) condition and an experimental simulation of iron oxide formation in the presence of ferrous and ferric ions. After actual operations for 12781 and 36326 hr in the power plant, two iron oxide layers of magnetite on the evaporator tubes were found: a continuous inner layer and a porous outer layer. The experimental simulation (i.e., artificial corrosion in the presence of ferrous and ferric ions at 100 ppm level for 100 hr) reveals that ferrous ions turn the continuous inner oxide layer on tube metal to cracks and pores, while ferric ions facilitate the production of porous outer oxide layer consisting of large crystallites. Based on a comparison of the oxide layers produced in the experimental simulation with those observed on the actually used tubes, we propose possible routes for oxid layer formation schematically. In addition, the limits of the proposed corrosion routes are discussed in detail.

A paradigm shift in the government's energy policy was reflected in its declaration of early closure of old nuclear plants as well as cancellation of plans for the construction of new plants. To this end, unit 1 of Kori Nuclear Power Plant was permanently shut down and is set for decommission. Based on these changes, the off-site transport of spent fuels from nuclear power plants has become a critical issue. The purpose of this study is to develop an optimized method for transportation of spent fuels from Kori Nuclear Power Plant's units 1, 2, 3, and 4 to an assumed interim storage facility by simulating the scenarios using the Flexsim software, which is widely used in logistics and manufacturing applications. The results of the simulation suggest that the optimized transport methods may contribute to the development of delivery schedule of spent fuels in the near future. Furthermore, these methods can be applied to decommissioning plan of nuclear power plants.
Coal tar-coated pipes buried in a domestic nuclear power plant have operated under the cathodic protection. This work conducted the simulation of the coating performance of these pipes using a FEM method. The pipes, being ductile cast iron have been suffered under considerably high cathodic protection condition beyond the appropriate condition. However, cathodic potential measured at the site revealed non-protected status. Converting from 3D CAD data of the power plant to appropriate type for a FEM simulation was conducted and cathodic potential under the applied voltage and current was calculated using primary and secondary current distribution and physical conditions. FEM simulation for coal tar-coated pipe without defects revealed over-protection condition if the pipes were well-coated. However, the simulation for coal tar-coated pipes with many defects predict that the coated pipes may be severely degraded. Therefore, for high risk pipes, direct examination and repair or renewal of pipes are strongly recommended.

Environmental regulations have recently been strengthened. Consequently, floating LNG(Liquefied Natural Gas) power plants are being developed, which are new power generation plants that generate electricity by utilizing LNG. A floating LNG power plant generates BOG(Boil-Off Gas) during its operation, and the system design of such a plant should be capable of removing or re-liquefying BOG. However, the design of an offshore plant differs according to the marine requirements. Hence, a process simulation model of the BOG re-liquefaction system is needed, which can be continuously modified to avoid designing the floating LNG power plant through trial and error. In this paper, to develop a model appropriate for the floating LNG power plant, a commercial process simulation program was employed. Depending on the presence of refrigerants, various BOG re-liquefaction systems were modeled for comparing and analyzing the re-liquefaction rates and liquid points of BOG. Consequently, the BOG re-liquefaction system model incorporating nitrogen refrigerants is proposed as the re-liquefaction system model for the floating LNG power plant.

In order to enhance the dynamic and interactive simulation capability of a system thermal hydraulic code for nuclear power plant, applicability of flow network models in SINDA/FLUIN $T^{™}$ has been tested by modeling feedwater system and coupling to DSNP which is one of a system thermal hydraulic simulation code for a pressurized heavy water reactor. The feedwater system is selected since it is one of the most important balance of plant systems with a potential to greatly affect the behavior of nuclear steam supply system. The flow network model of this feedwater system consists of condenser, condensate pumps, low and high pressure heaters, deaerator, feedwater pumps, and control valves. This complicated flow network is modeled and coupled to DSNP and it is tested for several normal and abnormal transient conditions such turbine load maneuvering, turbine trip, and loss of class IV power. The results show reasonable behavior of the coupled code and also gives a good dynamic and interactive simulation capabilities for the several mild transient conditions. It has been found that coupling system thermal hydraulic code with a flow network code is a proper way of upgrading simulation capability of DSNP to mature nuclear plant analyzer (NPA).
We acquired operating data to develop a digital control system adaptable to gas turbine power plant with about 50 to 100MW. We analyzed an existing analog control logic using these data. We developed control application programs for turbine automatic start up. We showed a similar result compared with an existing analog control system by computer simulation.

This study is established the data-centric design concept, which is the latest design technique, by analyzing existing study literature for its application on the nuclear power plant industry in Korea. This study investigated the data-centric design cases in the advanced companies and suggests a data-centric design integrated system framework by analyzing the major functions of the commercial 3D CAD system, which is globally used in the plant architect engineering. In order to apply the data-centric design integrated system framework to the nuclear power plant industry in Korea, the main functions of a nuclear power plant design information integrated system framework, which can manage the design products of each EPC step and the related information in integrated way, is suggested by analyzing the supplier design, field design process and field design drawings, which have close relation with the plant Architect Engineering (A/E). It is expected that the result of this study would contribute in the dramatic enhancement in the job efficiency of nuclear power plant design process in Korea.
A control system has been being developed by korean engineers for 500MW korean standard type fossil power plant with the advent of retrofit of old control system. Simulators have been used for digital I&C system pre-tests and validation tests in nuclear power plants. In this paper, the power plant simulator for control system V&V was developed in order to verify the developed control system prior to application to a power plant. The control models were developed using plant control system data, translator programs, and vendor manuals. The developed simulator was verified by steady-state test, load swing test, transient test and so on.
Among those tests performed during the Yonggwang Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 and 4 (YGN 3&4) Power Ascension Test period, the Loss of a Main Feedwater Pump test at l00% power is one of the major test which characterize the capability of YGN 3&4. In this event, one of the two normally operating main feedwater pumps is tripped resulting in a 50% reduction in the feedwater flow. Unless the NSSS and Turbine/Generator control systems actuate properly, the reactor will be tripped on low SG water level or high pressurizer pressure. The test performed at Unit 3 was successful by meeting all acceptance criteria, and the plant was stabilized at a reduced power level without reactor trip. The measured test data for the major plant parameters are compared with the predictions made by the KISPAC computer code, an updated best-estimate plant performance analysis code, to verify and validate its applicability. The comparison results showed good agreement in the magnitude as well as the trends of the major plant parameters. Therefore, the KISPAC code can be utilized for the best-estimate nuclear power plant design and simulation tool after a further verification using other plant test data.
