Ampicillin and Sulbactam (2:1, w/w) are combined in formulation to provide broader antibacterial action in treatment of many infections. The development of analytical method for simultaneouly determine these two compounds was difficult because of the differences in their chemical structures and ratio in the formulation. Current published methods still have some limitations. In this study, we developed an alternative high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) assay method for simultaneously determination of ampicillin sodium and sulbactam sodium in powder for injection. Method validation of HPLC method was conducted to determine linearity, precision, accuracy, system suitability, robustness. The linearity of the calibration curves in the desired concentration range was good ($r^2$> 0.9994). RSDs of intra-day and inter-day precision obtained were less than 2.00 %. Accuracy was obtained with the recoveries in range of 98.42 % and 101.36 %. As a result of system suitability, RSD of both retention time and the peak area obtained were not more than 1.0 %. The values of plate number were more than 7000 and symmetric factors obtained were 0.8. As intermediate-precision and robustness of the developed assay, it could be expected to become valuable tools for revising the Korean Pharmacopoeia (KP XI).
In this work, we have prepared platinum catalyst by various methods, investigated fuel cell performance and compared performance with commercially available $20\%$ Pt supported on carbon (Pt/C) catalyst. We have found that Pt/C prepared by reduction of chloroplatinic acid in mixed solvent (water+ethylene glycol) gives better performance compared to that produced by reduction of aqueous chloroplatinic acid, which can be attributed to smaller catalyst particle size and lower agglomeration in the mixed solvent. We have also prepared a novel platinum electrocatalyst by depositing platinum on Nafion coated carbon powder and it shows great promise. The performance of electrode prepared using $20\%Pt$ onn Nafion coated carbon mixed with Pt/C was found to be higher than the performance of electrodes using commercially available $20\%$ Pt/C, up to a current density of about $1100mA/cm^2$. The cell voltages obtained were respectively 621 and 603mV, at a current density of: $1000mA/cm^2$, in a single cell using $0.25mgPt/cm^2$ and Nafion 10035 membrane at $80^{\circ}C$ using hydrogen/oxygen reactants at 1 atm pressure.

By thermal evaporation method, well-aligned ZnO nanowires were synthesized on sapphire substrate at $1000^{\circ}C$ with different oxygen flow rate by using pure ZnO powder (99.999 %). The as-synthesized ZnO nanowires were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The well-aligned nanowires are single crystalline in nature and perpendicularly grown along the c-axis. Also the growth rate of nanowires, such as diameter and length, had a tendency to increase as oxygen flow rate increased. Based on the PL measurement of ZnO nanowires, we found that the near band edge of emission redshifted with the increasing intensity of the defect-related green emission in proportion to the increase of oxygen flow rate. This study investigated the changes in functional components of barley powder produced from different grain varieties (Dahan, Hinchalssalbori, Heukgwang, Huknuri and Boseokchal) and varying milling degrees (27, 23, 19, and 15%). Total polyphenol contents increased with a decrease in the milling degree, with content ranges of 0.97-1.40, 1.19-1.66, 1.22-1.77, 1.30-1.93, and 1.46-2.12 mg/g, respectively. Total flavonoids content also increased with a decrease in the milling degree. The total polyphenol and flavonoids contents were the highest in barley powder from Huknuri and Boseokchal grains. Total dietary fiber, arabinoxylan, and GABA contents increased with a decrease in the milling degree. As the milling degrees decreased, ${\beta}$-glucan contents, which was the highest in Hinchalssalbori and Boseokchal, decreased with ranges of 4.98-7.29, 5.26-7.03, 4.84-7.17, 4.84-700, and 4.66-6.33 mg/100 g, respectively. These results provide useful data for selection of an appropriate variety and milling degree to achieve a high quality in barley processing.

In this paper, a manufacturing method of an anti-glare cover glass on LCD for outdoor use is proposed. The main specification of cover glass is hardness and anti-glare. Hardness is achieved by using the tempered glass, and anti-glare(AG) film is laminated to meet anti-glare specification no the tempered glass. However, the AG film is difficult to maintain the AG performance continuously because the abrasion resistance of the PET film itself is as weak as about 3H. Therefore, a novel production procedure using screen printing method is proposed. The proposed coating is implemented by applying $ZnO-B_2O_3-SiO_2$ powder on glass surface and the glass is made with enhanced hardness through tempering process. In order to apply the ZBS powder uniformly on the glass surface, a screen printing process is used. The main parameters to be considered in screen printing are the oil concentration and mesh opening size. Because the amount of ZBS powder applied to the printing process is controlled by these two parameters, the correlativity is confirmed through the experiments. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, the haze, surface roughness and transmittance are selected as the performance index and are compared with the AG film. As a result of comparison, it is verified that the transmittance of the proposed tempered glass is 83.1%, which is slightly lower than 89.5% of AG film, but the hardness is more than double to 7H.

In recent decades, health concerns related to sodium intake have caused an increased demand for salt or sodium-reduced foods. Umami substance can enhance taste sensitivity to NaCl and may offer a unique approach to replace and reduce the sodium content in foods. In this study, hot water extraction conditions of Wando sea tangle with high umami taste were investigated. Wando sea tangle harvested in June was selected for hot water extraction based on its free amino acids composition. The quality properties of sea tangle extract were investigated at various extraction temperatures ($60^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$, and $100^{\circ}C$) and times (1 h, 2 h, and 3 h). Sea tangle extracts at the extraction temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ contained the highest soluble solids (35.47%~36.93%), and crude protein (3.75%~4.00%). Viscosities of sea tangle extracts decreased with increasing extraction temperature. Umami amino acids (glutamic acid and aspartic acid) and sensory characteristics were best at extraction conditions of $100^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Saltiness enhancement of sea tangle extract powder was determined. Saltiness intensities of NaCl solution after adding 1% sea tangle extract powder were enhanced (1.84~4.25-fold). At the same saltiness intensity, sodium contents of NaCl solution with 1% sea tangle extract powder were 12.24~24.33% lower than that of NaCl solution. These results suggest that it is possible to reduce sodium in foods with sea tangle extract as a natural salt enhancer without lowering overall taste intensity.

On the basis of the widely collected fork prescriptions, long clinical practice of himself, together with integration of all the good points of earlier medical specialists, 孫思邈 wrote 『千金方』 of thirty volumes. Among them Volumes 『食治』 (Food Therapy) and 『養性』(Cultivating the Character) are especially meaningful for in gerontology. Thirty years after its completion, as a supplement, he wrote another thirty volumes of 『千金翼方』. Mr. Sun integrated his discoveries in the treatments of the aged patients, and his opinions for longevity into the Volumes 『養性』 (Cultivating the Character), 『?穀』(Fasting), 『退居』(Retirement), 『補益』(Supplementation). Thus he laid down the basic foundation for the gerontology of Chinese medicine. 『千金要方』 and 『千金翼方』 by Mr. Sun discuss mainly the prevention of illness for aged patients. As for the function of food therapy, he explains: 'Food can dispel evil elements of the body and settle down its organs. It can further bring pleasure to man's spirit and help the circulation of blood and breath.' He then propose the major method of food therapy: 'For a medical doctor, he should understand the causes of disease, then treat it with food. Only after the food treatment fails, medicine is employed.' He thinks that medicine does work in treatment, but it also creates imbalance in the body, and makes the latter vulnerable to outside harms. Therefore, a good doctor is the one who cures the disease and bring pleasure to the patient with food. He stresses that food therapy is always a priority. Mr. Sun prefers animal's organs in the food therapy for aged. For example, he uses powder of sheep's kidney to treat the lumbago. He suggests the viewpoint of 'Curing man's organs with animal's organs' and 'Strengthening man's organs with animal's organs,' and sets the theoretical foundation of 'Organic Treatment.' Mr. Sun's gerontology and food therapy received further development latter. The prescriptions contained therein had been widely used in 王懷隱's 『太平聖惠方』 and 陳直's 『養老奉親書』, both in the Song Dynasty. Eventually they had become a science of food therapy for aged patients.
This study aims at providing the fundamental data on the field of cosmetics by comparing heavy metal concentration in terms of domestic/foreign products, items, companies and colors. This study has determined the concentration of chromium, lead, mangagnese, nickel, copper and vanadium in cosmetics such as moisturizer, concealer, foundation (Ivory-yellow), compact powder (Ivory-yellow), lip colo. (Red, brown), eye shadow (Red, brwon and dark green) and eye liner (Black) manufactured by five domestic cosmetic companies and five foreign cosmetic companies on the market. The samples have been collected in cosmetic stores in Pusan from Dec. lst 1996 to Jan. 3lst 1997. The results are as follows : 1. The heavy metal concentration in cosmetics was $2.420{\mu}g/g$ for chromium, $0.82{\mu}g/g$ for lead, $4.49{\mu}g/g$ for manganese, $1.69{\mu}g/g$for nickel, $0.53{\mu}g/g$ for copper, and $51{\mu}g/g$ for vanadium, respectively. 2. Lead and vanadium concentration were significantly higher in domestic cosmetics than foreign cosmetics(p<0.05). 3. The mean(GM) concentrations of heavy metal were different significantly (p<0.01) when classified with cosmetic items. The highest means shown at eye shadow in $Cr(14.96{\mu}g/g),\;Cu(1.32{\mu}g/g),\;V(1.28{\mu}g/g),\;and\;Ni(8.30{\mu}g/g)$, compact powder in $Pb(2.50{\mu}g/g)$, eye liner in $Mn(90.62{\mu}g/g)$. 4. The mean(GM) concentrations of heavy metal were different significantly (p<0.01) among colored cosmetics. The highest mean concentration of Cr, Ni, Cu and V were dark green-colored cosmetics, that of Mn was black-colored cosmetics, and that of Pb was ivory yellow- colored cosmetics.

BACKGROUND: Cultivation area using agricultural plastic film facilities in Korea is rapidly increasing every year; however, it accelerates the salt accumulation in soils due to repeated cultivation and excessive use of chemical fertilizers. Coal ash contains various trace elements and has high potential to be used in agricultural purposes. This research was aimed to improve the quality of salts-accumulated soils and crop growth grown in the plastic film facilities using the soil amendment derived from coal ash and zero-valent iron powder. METHODS AND RESULTS: Soil amendment used in the study was manufactured using coal ash with iron powder and subjected to a typical upland soil for soil quality enhancement and two salts-accumulated soils for crop growth. After one month incubation of the salts-accumulated soils treated with the soil amendment, soil pH increased significantly and soil EC decreased by approximately 50%, compared to the control or the treatment without the soil amendment. Since the soil salts' concentration is proportional to EC, the subjected soil amendment can be proposed as an effective way to overcome soil salts accumulation in agricultural plastic film facilities. For crop growth, the length of roots and stems increased by approximately 10% and the dry weight also increased by a maximum of 75%, compared to the control. CONCLUSION: The soil amendment made from waste resources such as coal ash and zero-valent iron was found to not only be effective in improving salt-accumulated soils and crop yield but also be safe against harmful heavy metals.

Knives are most frequently used as weapons in violent crimes. Criminals leave behind knife sheaths made of paper and tape at crime scenes. It is difficult to develop fingerprints using tape attached to a porous surface, resulting in the need to explore effective techniques for identifying fingerprints as well as the distribution of fingerprints on each surface, when evidence such as paper knife sheaths are found. In this study, 50 knife sheaths were prepared. The cyanoacrylate fuming (CA fuming) method was applied to develop fingerprints on the non-adhesive side of the tape, and a dual-purpose 1,2-indanedione/Zn (1,2-IND/Zn) reagent was used to separate tape from paper while simultaneously developing fingerprints on the paper. The fingerprints on the adhesive side of the tape were developed using Wet Powder Black®. Using the R statistical analysis program (The R Foundation for Statistical Computing), we used a heat map to indicate the location of fingerprints developed from each surface. More fingerprints were detected at the ends than in the center of the adhesive side of the tape, and although the non-adhesive sides of tape and paper did not present clear distribution patterns, many fingerprints were developed that had sufficient clarity for personal identification. The results of this study may be applicable for processing evidence when paper sheaths are found at crime scenes.
