  • The purpose of this study was to analyze radiocarbon dating, using wiggle match, of a wooden board from Yeongheung-do shipwreck excavated from Yeongheung-do in Incheon Ongjingun. The result of wiggle matching for 5 decennial tree-ring block samples of the hull bottom board produced ${\pm}2{\sigma}$ radiocarbon date (95.4% confidence interval) as A.D. 710~730 or A.D. 750~774. It indicated that the Yeongheung-do shipwreck belonged to the early or middle of the 8th century. Radiocarbon dating results confirmed the date speculated by archaeologists according to ship structure and pottery style.

  • In most RP processes, the inherent stair-stepped surfaces and shrinkage-induced warping of the parts require post processing such as surface finishing. To minimize such defects, VLH-ST, a newly developed RP process, employs a 3.9-mm thick expandable polystyrene (EPS) foam sheet and a hot wire to contour it to have slant linear-interpolated sides. The use of relatively thick sheets for layers, however, limits the process capability of constructing fine details, especially smaller than the layer thickness. This study is focused on the development of a post processing method fo fine details of VLM-ST parts. The post-processing tool was designed to meet all the requirements for the desirable post processing. It adopted a hot wire as a means of melting the EPS foam sheet. Various basic experiments on the post processing were carried out to obtain the optimal process conditions. The dominant process parameters such as the radiated heat input, the tool speed, and the gap between the tool tip and the foam sheet (tool height) were considered in the experiments. The effectiveness of the developed post-processing method fo forming or engraving fine details on the VLM-ST parts has been thus demonstrated. The experiments on engraving several sets of letters, such as CANESM, 인간, and 한국과학기술원, on the EPS foam sheet were carried out. In addition, a flowery shape was engraved on a three-dimensionally curved surface of a pottery-shape VLM-ST part.

  • This study examines the visitors'evaluations of tourism resources in Insa-dong, which the Seoul metropolitan government has improved recently. This study adopted the method of Importance-Performance Analysis by collecting data through questionnaires. A random sampling of visitors to Insa-dong was conducted in June and July,2001. The survey included questions on the physical and psychological components of Insa-dong's tourism resources. In the case of physical components, eight factors(ancient arts shop, art gallery, atelier, calligraphy shop, pottery arts, traditional tea house, antique shop, traditional clothes) out of thirteen were categorized as 'keeping up the good work'. None of the Physical components was shown as 'low priority'or'possible overkill'. In particular, four factors(restaurant, heritage, Korean-style house and alley, traditional cultural festival) need to be impoved most urgently in terms of visitors'satisfaction. Survey results realize them as high priority in importance but low in performance, thereby designated as, 'concentrate here'. An image of the 'street' showed to be high in importance and identical in performance, so can be categorized between'keeping up the good work'and 'concentrate here'. The results show that unusual outdoor spaces and the festivals of Insa-dong have a significant meaning to the visitors. In the case of psychological components, three factors(general atmosphere experience of unusual atmosphere, appropriateness of stroll time) out of seventeen were categorized as 'keeping up the good work'. Ore factor (shopping) was designated as 'low priority'and not found to be 'possible overkill'. Thirteen factors (various events, possibility of various activity, various flood, richness of play, new experience, education cultural inheritance, parking facilities, resting places, green spaces, meeting places, guide map and information, cleanliness of facilities/convenience) need to be improved mast urgently in terms of visitors' fulfillment. They are perceived as areas of 'concentrate here'. This confirms that attractive events are essential for the recent visitor satisfaction. Furthermore, visitors are not satisfied with its amenity and acccss in Insa-dong despite the improvements. In conclusion, positive impressions, both physical and psychological, should be maintained while factors mentioned to be lacking should be prioritized in order of necessity to improve the image of Insa-dong and solutions need to be found and implemented. The results of this study would be helpful in the planning and management of nsa-dong considering the visitors'requirements.

  • This study has proved if there are homogeneities in crystal structures, firing temperaures and element compositions of 69 specimens for potteries and soils from Changdo, Kangjin-gun, Jinjuk-Ri in Korea and Yaezhou inChina and obtained the following results.1. XRD analyses showed that soft potteries seemed to contain ($\alpha$)quartz, feldspar, while hard potteries seemed to contain ($\alpha$-)quartz, mullite, tridymite, feldspar. Jinjuk-Ri soils consisted of clays such as Kiolinite, Montmorillonite, Muscovite, Illite and, mica and feldspar etc.2. It was estimated that the firing temperatures which are determined by crystals using XRD, ranged from $550^{\circ}C$ to $870^{\circ}C$ for soft potteries and $870^{\circ}C$ to $975^{\circ}C$ for hard potteries.3. The firing temperatures for 4-pieces of Changdo pottery were measured by using TG-DTA, and it was found that specimen No. 10 was fired at temperatures below $600^{\circ}C$, while specimens No. 14, No. 23 and No. 29 were fired at temperatures above $1000^{\circ}C$.4. It was found that the specimems for potteries and porcelains from Changdo, Kangjin-gun, Jinjuk-Ri in Korea and Yaezhou in China were apparently classified into 4 clusters. This suggests that there are no correlations between the raw materials used in each 4 regions. Among the porcelains from Changdo, there were many typologically similar ones to those from Yaezhou in China in the 9th centry, but the analyses of porcelains only from Changdo, Kangjin in Korea and Yaezhouin China showed that they were classified into 3 clusters. This suggest that there are no correlations between the raw materials used for making porcelains in Changdo, Kangjin-gun, Jinjuk-Ri in Korea and Yaezhou in China.

  • Onggi, described as a 'breathing' type of pottery' has significantly influenced the traditional food culture of Korea. It is known that Onggi is an optimal type of storage for fermented foods such as soy sauce, salted seafood, and Kimchi, as air or liquid can penetrate through the body of this material. These foods gain flavor due to the breeding of aerobic bacteria at the beginning of the fermentation process. In this study, Onggi materials from five regions, Gangjin, Yeoju, Ulsan, Yesan, and Jeju, were collected and analyzed to determine their chemical and physical properties before and after sintering. The differences in the raw materials of other mining regions are examined in terms of their chemical and mineralogical compositions, specific surface area, particle size, and particle distribution. Among them, the Gangjin raw material has the greatest mean particle size of $92.29{\mu}m$, as well as the widest particle size distribution. Differences in the levels of $SiO_2$ and $Fe_2O_3$ are shown among Onggi raw materials. However, the crystalline phases formed after sintering are identical, except for the Jeju samples. At all sintering temperatures tested here, Gangjin Onggi showed the greatest porosity, leading to complete air permeation through the body within 90 minutes. These results taken together indicate that air permeation is strongly related to the pore structures in the Onggi body. This is assumed to affect the fermentation behavior.

  • This research concerns the effect of kaolin as material of cement admixture. which has the advantage of low price and high adaptability. Kaolin, a kind of soil, is well known as a raw material of pottery. which is widely scat-tered on the earth (especially in Korea). This research shows the method and process for activating kaolin to have the properties of a cement admixture through experiment. In the experiments, kaolin is baked in high temperature and then cooled suddenly to be activated. The temperature zone and time span, on which kaolin is activated are examined. The research looks over the effect of the activated kaolin based on several criteria regarding to chemical and physical characteristic of general admixtures. The results of this research are as follows; kaolin start activation at the temperature above 50$0^{\circ}C$ and make ends of activation at the temperature below 95$0^{\circ}C$ and there was little effect by the change of duration. It is concluded that compressive strength can be increased by putting activated kaolin in the concrete and the activated kaolin is good for water resistance and anti-chemical , and that it is effective for protecting the leakage of hazardous article like Cl- and for protecting damage by an organic salt like acid. The activated kaolin of proper temperature and time is effective in compressive strength, salt resistance and acid resistance. The adaptability of activated kaolin as a cement admixture was shown through this research.

  • Modern ceramics art has various expression techniques. Among them, the digitization of modern society has led to the development of the transfer printing technique, and the technique of transfer printing has been utilized as medium of expression of modern ceramics. However, the transfer printing technique is merely uniform and does not give enough information to utilize the artistic expression of the craftsmen using the technique of decal rather than actively utilizing it in the field for mass production. Therefore. In this paper, we will examine the works of contemporary pottery artists who understand the meaning of the transfer printing technique and express the artist 's personality and artistry with transfer printing technique, so that the transfer printing technique can enhance the aesthetic and artistic effect of ceramic art as the expression medium of modern ceramics. We want to lay the foundations for a higher value-added industry.

  • Hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of pottery bodies can be controlled via chemical substitution of layered clay with hydrophilic and hydrophobic organics. In this study, organo-clay nanocomposites were prepared by ion-exchange of montmorillonite with dodecylamine and hexadecylamine, respectively. Substitution sites of organics and the interval changes of layered materials are characterized by FT-IR and WAXD and organics amounts loaded and water comtents contained by C/S analysis and TG-DSC. The organics were selectively intercalated so that increase layer interval from 12${\AA}\; to\;16{\AA}$. Organo-modified clay is changed to more hydrophobic comparing to clay itself.
