Two arylamino substituted mercaptoimidazole derivatives namely 4,5-dimethyl-1-(phenylamino)-1H-imidazole-2(3H)-thione (I1) and 4,5- dimethyl-1-((p-chlorophenyl)amino)- 1H-imidazole-2(3H)-thione (I2) were synthesized and investigated as corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in 0.5 M HCl solution by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and SEM. The results showed that the investigated mercaptoimidazole derivatives act as mixed type inhibitors and inhibition efficiency follows the I2>I1 order. Adsorption of inhibitors on metal surface was found to obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Thermodynamic parameters revealed that adsorption of the inhibitors has both physisorption and chemisorption adsorption mechanism. Electrochemical test results were supported by quantum chemical parameters obtained from DFT calculations.
Statement of problem: Dental magnetic materials have been applied to removable prosthetic appliances, maxillofacial prostheses, obturator and dental implant but they still have some problems such as low corrosion resistance in oral environments. Purpose: To increase the corrosion resistance of dental magnetic materials, surfaces of Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B based magnetic materials were plated with TiN and sealed with stainless steels. Materials and methods : Surfaces of Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B based magnetic materials were plated with TiN and sealed with stainless steels, and then three kinds of electrochemical corrosion test were performed in 0.9% NaCl solution; potentiodynamic, potentiostatic, and electrochemical impedance test. From this study, corrosion behavior, amount of elements released, mean average surface roughness values, the changing of retention force, and magnetic force values were measured comparing with control group of non-coated magnetic materials. Results: The values of surface roughness of TiN coated Sm-Co and TiN coated Nd-Fe-B based magnetic materials were lower than those of non coated Sm-Co and Nd-Fe-B alloy. From results of potentiodynamic test, the passive current density of TiN coated Sm-Co alloy were smaller than those of TiN coated Nd-Fe-B alloy and non coated alloys in 0.9% NaCl solution. From results of potentiostatic and electrochemical impedance test, the surface stability of the TiN coated Sm-Co alloy was more drastically increased than that of the TiN coated Nd-Fe-B alloy and non-coated alloy. The retention and magnetic force after and before corrosion test did not change in the case of TiN coated magnetic alloy sealed with stainless steel. Conclusion: It is considered that the corrosion problem and improvement for surface stability of dental magnetic materials could be solved by ion plating with TiN on the surface of dental magnetic materials and by sealing with stainless steels.
Many studies have been conducted to improve the corrosion resistance and durability of various aluminum alloys through the anodizing technique. It is already used as a unique technique for enhancing the properties of aluminum alloys in various industries. This paper investigated the electrochemical corrosion and stress corrosion cracking characteristics of anodized aluminum 5083-H321 alloy in natural seawater. The corrosion characteristics were assessed by the electrochemical technique and potentiodynamic polarization test. The stress corrosion cracking characteristic was evaluated with a slow strain rate tensile test under 0.005 mm/min rate, which showed that the hard anodizing film had a thickness of about 16.8 ㎛. Although no significant characteristics of stress corrosion cracking were observed in the slow strain rate test, the anodized specimen presented excellent corrosion resistance. The corrosion current density was measured to be approximately 4.2 times lower than that of the base material, and no surface damage was observed in the anodic polarization test.
This research work aims to investigate the effect of the aerobic bacterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa on the mechanical and electrochemical properties of the 316L stainless steel and α-brass. These properties of both the alloys were determined after 7 days of exposure to the controlled and inoculated media at 37℃. The microstructural and electrochemical test results revealed the deleterious effects of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. After exposure to the inoculated medium, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed the larger pitting and formation of relatively dense biofilm on α-brass compared to 316L stainless steel. The tensile strength and hardness of 316L stainless steel were slightly affected after exposure to the controlled and inoculated media. After exposure to the controlled medium and inoculated media, the tensile strength of the α-brass was least affected but a significant decrease in the hardness (from 165 HV to 124 HV) was observed due to the severe attack induced by the Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Similarly, the open-circuit potential of the 316L stainless steel in the inoculated medium was measured to be less active (-410 mV vs Ag/AgCl) than α-brass (-550 mV vs Ag/AgCl). In the inoculated medium, potentiodynamic polarization curves confirmed the severe attack of Pseudomonas aeruginosa on α-brass (7.15 × 10-2 mm/year) compared to 316L stainless steel which registered a corrosion rate of 5.14 × 10-4 mm/year.
The microstructure and texture of three 316L foils of 25 ㎛ thickness, which were subjected to different manufacturing process, were systematically characterized using advance analytical techniques. Then, the electrochemical property of the 316L foils in simulated pressurized water reactor (PWR) solution was analyzed using potentiodynamic polarization. The results showed that final rolling strain and annealing temperature had evident effect on grain size, fraction of recrystallization, grain boundary type and texture distribution. It was suggested that large final rolling strain could transfer Brass texture to Copper texture; low annealing temperature could limit the formation of preferable orientations in the rolling process to reduce anisotropy. Potentiodynamic polarization test showed that all samples exhibited good corrosion performance in the simulated primary PWR solution.
Since 2020, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has updated regulations on the sulfur content to be less than 0.5% in exhaust gas emitted from ships. Accordingly, the exhaust gas post-treatment device for ships, which is SOx/NOx reduction technology, was introduced. However, the exhaust gas post-treatment device is suffering corrosion because of the harsh corrosive environment formed by sulfate and chlorine oxide through the desulfurization process. In this investigation, cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPDP) experiment for UNS S31603 and UNS N08367 was performed in a green death solution that simulates the environment of a desulfurization device. The corrosion rate of UNS S31603 at the highest temperature was about 3 times higher than that of UNS N83067. Also, electron microscope scan revealed corrosion type UNS N83067 presents intergranular corrosion tendency. On the other hand, UNS S31603 was observed as general corrosion. The α values of UNS N08367 at 30 ℃ and 60 ℃ were higher than those of UNS S31603, thus UNS N08367 is considered to have a higher local damage tendency. Whereas, since the α value of UNS S31603 at 90 ℃ is larger than that of UNS N08367, UNS S31603 is considered to have a higher local damage trend.
Pure Ti as well as Ti-6Al-4V alloy exhibit excellent properties for dental implant applications. However, for a better biocompatibility it seems important to avoid in the composition the presence of V due to the toxic effects of V ion release. Thus Al and V free and composed of non-toxic element such as Nb, Zr alloys as biomaterials have been developed. Especially, Zr contains to same family in periodic table as Ti. The addition of Zr to Ti alloy has an excellent mechanical properties, good corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility. In this study, the electrochemical characteristics of Ti-Zr alloys for biomaterials have been investigated using by electrochemical methods. Methods: Ti-Zr(10, 20, 30 and 40 wt%) alloys were prepared by arc melting and homogenized for 24 hr at $1000^{\circ}C$ in argon atmosphere. Phase constitutions and microstructure of the specimens were characterized by XRD, OM and SEM. The corrosion properties of the specimens were examined through potentiodynamic test (potential range of -1500 ~ 2000 mV), potentiostatic test (const. potential of 300 mV) in artificial saliva solution by potentiostat (EG&G Co, PARSTAT 2273. USA).
Titanium and its alloy have been widely used in dental implant and orthopedic prostheses. Electrochemical characteristics of dental implant in the various simulated body fluids have been researched by using electrochemical methods. Ti-6Al-4V alloy implant was used for corrosion test in 0.9% NaCl, artificial saliva and simulated body fluids. The surface morphology was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The electrochemical stability was investigated using potentiosat (EG&G Co, 263A). The corrosion surface was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). From the results of potentiodynamic test in various solution, the current density of implant tested in SBF and AS solution was lower than that of implant tested in 0.9% NaCl solution. From the results of passive film stability test, the variation of current density at constant 250 mV showed the consistent with time in the case of implant tested in SBF and AS solution, whereas, the current density at constant 250mV in the case of implant tested in 0.9% NaCl solution showed higher compared to SBF and AS solution as time increased. From the results of cyclic potentiodynamic test, the pitting potential and |$E_{pit}\;-\;E_{corr}$| of implant tested in SBF and AS solution were higher than those of implant tested in 0.9% NaCl solution.
The hull material of a high-speed ship may cause erosion damage from fluid impact. When physical erosion and electrochemical corrosion combine, erosion corrosion damage occurs. The aluminum ship is vulnerable to erosion corrosion because it can be operated at high speed. Thus, in this study, Al5052-O and Al6061-T6 aluminum alloys for the marine environment were selected as experimental materials. The erosion corrosion resistance of Al5052-O and Al6061-T6 aluminum alloys in seawater was investigated by an erosion test and potentiodynamic polarization test at the various flow rate (0 m/s, 5 m/s, 10 m/s, 15 m/s, 20 m/s). Erosion corrosion characteristics were evaluated by surface analysis, 3D analysis, SEM analysis, and the Tafel extrapolation method. The results of surface damage analysis after the erosion test showed that Al6061-T6 presented better erosion resistance than Al5052-O. The results of the potentiodynamic polarization test at the various flow rate, corrosion current density by Tafel extrapolation presented lower values of Al6061-T6 than Al5052-O. Al5052-O showed more surface damage than Al6061-T6 at all flow rates. Consequently, Al6061-T6 presented better erosion corrosion resistance than Al5052-O. The results of this study are valuable data for selecting hull material for an aluminum alloy vessel.
A wet type scrubber for merchant vessel uses super austenitic stainless steels with pitting resistance equivalent number (PREN) of 40 or higher for operation in a harsh corrosive environment. However, it is expensive due to a high nickel content. Thus, electrochemical behavior and cavitation erosion characteristics of UNS S32750 as an alternative material were investigated. Microstructure analysis revealed fractions of ferritic and austenitic phases of 48% and 52%, respectively, confirming the existence of ferritic matrix and austenitic island. Potentiodynamic polarization test revealed damage at the interface of the two phases because of galvanic corrosion due to different chemical compositions of ferritic and austenitic phases. After a cavitation test, a compressive residual stress was formed on the material surface due to impact pressure of cavity. Surface hardness was improved by water cavitation peening effect. Hardness value was the highest at 30 ㎛ amplitude. Scanning electron microscopy revealed wave patterns due to plastic deformation caused by impact pressure of the cavity. The depth of surface damage increased with amplitude. Cavitation test revealed larger damage caused by erosion in the ferritic phase due to brittle fracture derived from different strain rate sensitivity index of FCC and BCC structures.
