Can Big Data Help Predict Financial Market Dynamics?: Evidence from the Korean Stock Market

  • This study quantifies the dynamic interrelationship between the KOSPI index return and search query data derived from the Naver DataLab. The empirical estimation using a bivariate GARCH model reveals that negative contemporaneous correlations between the stock return and the search frequency prevail during the sample period. Meanwhile, the search frequency has a negative association with the one-week- ahead stock return but not vice versa. In addition to identifying dynamic correlations, the paper also aims to serve as a test bed in which the existence of profitable trading strategies based on big data is explored. Specifically, the strategy interpreting the heightened investor attention as a negative signal for future returns appears to have been superior to the benchmark strategy in terms of the expected utility over wealth. This paper also demonstrates that the big data-based option trading strategy might be able to beat the market under certain conditions. These results highlight the possibility of big data as a potential source-which has been left largely untapped-for establishing profitable trading strategies as well as developing insights on stock market dynamics.

  • Liquefied-wood polymer composite was prepared and mechanical properties was evaluated to develop potential utility of liquefied wood. The liquefied wood was made from waste wood and chemical modified with acetic anhydride and maleic anhydride (MA), phtalic anhydride (PA). The composite sheet was prepared from modified liquefied-wood and polymer(PE). The mechanical, chemical and microscopical properties composite sheet were investigated. The results were summarized as follows, 1. The tensile strength was increased and breaking elongation of composite sheet was decreased with the time of acetylation and the dosage of MA. 2. The Young's modulus of composite sheet was gradually decreased with the dosage of PA. 3. The peak intensity of 1737cm-1 in FT-IR spectra of chemical modified liquefied woods was increased. 4. The dispersity of liquefied woods with PE was improved with chemical modification.

  • Properties of a good drug include safety, efficacy, half-life and bioavailability. With the current approach to drug discovery based on receptor-based and cell-based screening methods, compounds are frequently moved into development with poor bioavailability. With low bioavailability, drug administration is typically limited to parenteral routes, thus limiting the potential wide-spread utility of these therapeutic agents. The first and most important factor limiting a drug's bioavailability is the intestinal membrane permeability which in turn determines the maximum fi:action of the dose administered that can be absorbed. We have recently utilized new intubation methods for performing permeability measurements in humans and establishing a fundamental human data base for correlating intestinal jejunal membrane permeabilities with permeabilities determined in other systems, e.g., animals, tissue culture, as well as physical chemical properties.

Antitumor Components from Naematoloma fasciculare

  • The bioassay-guided fractionation of MeOH extract from Naematoloma fasciculare afforded a petroleum ether fraction (NFPF) and four known compounds, which showed good antitumor activities to inhibit MCF-7 cell line proliferation in vitro and tumor growth in $H_{22}$ implanted mice in vivo. In addition, a number of unsaturated aliphatic acids were identified in NFPF by GC analysis. These results showed that NFPF inhibits tumor growth through the activity of unsaturated aliphatic acids together with two active compounds, ergosterol peroxide (1: 62.17 mg/g in NFPF) and ergosterol (2: 3.13 mg/g in NFPF), and indicate the potential utility of NFPF as an antitumor drug.

  • Bahunia racemosa family, Caesalpiniaceae, is one of the precious resources of the earth. It has played a significant role in human civilization since ancient times. It is tall sized tree growing throughout India, Ceylon, China, and Timor. The different part of this plant contains β-sitosterol and β-amyrin, flavonols (kaempferol and quercetin) and two coumarins (scopoletin and scopolin), tannins etc. Various part of this plant has great pharmacological potential with a great utility and usage as folklore medicine as analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic and antimicrobial activity. This review mainly focus on the exclusive review work on the traditional, phytochemical and pharmacological activities of this plant.

  • Metal atom rearrangement has been shown to take place under the influence of hydrogen-induced atomic diffusion (HIAD) in initially homogeneous fee palladiumalloys by electron microprobe analysis, optical microscopy, mechanical property tests and hydrogen isotherms. HIAD takes place in palladium alloys at moderate to elevated temperatures leading to phase segregation under conditions where segregation does not normally occur, i.e., in the absence of H over the time scale of the experiments. From these results, it is confirmed that dissolved hydrogen plays a dual role in some of these alloys, i.e. it catalyzes metal atom diffusion. This research demonstrates the potential utility of employing H-induced changes for phase diagram determination of Pd alloys and possibly for other alloy system.

  • Surface characterization of materials has been considered critical in the development of biomaterials, as many unfavorable responses from the body occur at the interface between a material and the body component. The contact angle measurement is one means to characterize the surface properties and to correlate them to the biocompatibility of materials. In this paper, surface characteristics of silk fibroin/S-carboxymethyl kerateine, representative fibrous proteins, were investigated by contact angle measurements of ESCA. The biocompatibility of the blends was evaluated based on minimal interfacial free energy concept, and compared with other potential biomaterials. It was also hypothesized that the enhanced surface polarity of the blends was generated from the conformational transition of proteins. This approach to evaluate the biocompatibility of materials based on surface characteristics may find wide utility in many biomedical applications.

  • Nuclear myocardial perfusion imaging is very effective in the evaluation of patients with suspicious acute coronary syndrome (ACS), for adequate diagnosis and treatment. There have been many clinical evidences to support the efficacy and cost-effectiveness. In addition, many authoritative guidelines support the utility of myocardial perfusion imaging in ACS with an appropriate diagnostic protocol. However, with the development of other cardiac imaging modalities, the choice of modality for the diagnosis of suspicious ACS now depends on the availability of each modality in each institute. Newly developed imaging technologies, especially including molecular imaging, are expected to have great potential not only for diagnosis but also for primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of ACS.

  • The utility of Lepidium sativum Linn (Garden cress) as a medicinal plant has increased many fold over a period of time. A survey of literature relating to the medicinal uses of L.sativum reveals it to be one of the widely used medicinal plants. It finds place in folklore medicine, Ayurveda, Unani and other indigenous systems of medicine. Following a large number of claims on the wide range of traditional medicinal properties of the plant, considerable efforts have been made to verify its efficacy as a curative agent through pharmacological investigations and clinical trials. In this article, a comprehensive account of the traditional uses, phytochemical investigation and therapeutic potential of Lepidium sativum is presented.
