  • The stiffness matrix of a two-dimensional contact surface element is deduced from the principle of virtual work. The incremental loading procedure used is controlled by displacement and stress. Special potential contact elements are used to avoid the need to rearrange the FEM mesh due to variations of the contact surface as contact develops. Published results are used to validate the method, which is then applied to a turbine to solve the contact problem between the blade root and rotor in the region in which a 'push fit' connects the blade to its rotor.

  • Finite element technique considering adhesive forces is proposed and applied to analyze the behavior of elastic hemispherical asperity adhesively contacting the plane surface of semi -infinite rigid body. It is demonstrated that the finite element model simulates interfacial phenomena such as jump -to-contact and adhesion hysteresis that cannot be simulated with the currently available adhesive contact continuum models. This simulation aiso provides valuable information on contact pressure, contact region and stress distributions. This technique is anticipated to be utilized in designing a low-adhesion surface profile for MEMS/NEMS applications since various contact geometries can be analyzed with this technique.

  • Two enhancements to a recently developed plastic-damage-contact model for concrete are presented. The model itself, which uses planes of degradation that can undergo damage and separation but that can regain contact according to a contact law, is described. The first enhancement is a new damage evolution function which provides a completely smooth transition from the undamaged to the damaged state and from pre-peak to post-peak regions. The second is an improved contact function that governs the potential degree of contact with increasing opening on a crack plane. The use of a damage evolution function with a pre-peak has implications for the consistent tangent matrix/stress recovery algorithm developed for the model implementation, and amendments to this algorithm to accommodate the new function are described. A series of unpublished experimental tests on notched specimens undertaken in Cardiff in the mid 1990s are then described. These include notched beam tests as well as prismatic and cylindrical torsion tests. The tests are then considered in three dimensional finite element analyses using the modified Craft model implemented in the finite element program LUSAS. Comparisons between experimental and numerical data show reasonable agreement except that the numerical simulations do not fully describe the latter stages of the softening responses for the torsion examples. Finally, it is concluded that the torsion tests described provide useful benchmark examples for the validation of three-dimensional numerical models for concrete.

  • A rubber-like material model is generally characterized by hyperelasticity and formulated by a total stress-total strain relationship because the material shows nonlinear elastic behaviour under large deformation. In this study, a pressure potential obtained by a separately interpolated pressure is introduced to the non-linear finite element formulation incorporating with incompressible or almost incompressible condition of the material. The present formulation is somewhat different from the general formulation using the pressure computed in the displacement field. A non-linear finite element analysis program is developed for the plane strain and the axisymmetric contact problems of a rubber-like material. Various examples with rubber material are analyzed for its verification. The results about deformed shapes and stress distributions thought to be meaningful in comparison with a commercial program, MARC.

  • The aim of this paper is to perform a finite element analysis that will have the ability to predict the seal performance characteristics, such as deformation, contact load and friction and also is to provide a means of potential seal designs, which can reduce the time and cost of designing the performance of the seal. The material property tests of elastomer seal are performed to obtain the hyperelastic properties and The Mooney-Rivlin constants are determined from these test results. A 2D modelling of the seal cross section is performed to simulate the contact behavior between the seal on the piston and the cylinder bore under operation conditions. The deformation behavior, contact load and friction of an elastomer seal is analyzed by a finite element method which performs three analytic phases of interference fit, the variations of pneumatic pressure and piston movement under the operational conditions.

  • The major objective of this paper is to study the receding contact problem between two functional graded layers under a flat indenter. The gravity is assumed negligible, and the shear moduli of both layers are assumed to vary exponentially along the thickness direction. In the absence of body forces, the problem is reduced to a system of Fredholm singular integral equations with the contact pressure and contact size as unknowns via Fourier integral transform, which is transformed into an algebraic one by the Gauss-Chebyshev quadratures and polynomials of both the first and second kinds. Then, an iterative speediest descending algorithm is proposed to numerically solve the system of algebraic equations. Both semi-analytical and finite element method, FEM solutions for the presented problem validate each other. To improve the accuracy of the numerical result of FEM, a graded FEM solution is performed to simulate the FGM mechanical characteristics. The results reveal the potential links between the contact stress/size and the indenter size, the thickness, as well as some other material properties of FGM.

  • Vacuum interrupters have a special asymmetric electrode structure to generate an magnetic field and consequently to increase the interrupting ability. Accordingly 2-dimensional analysis has a large analysis error because radial flux can not be considered. In this paper, in order to analyse the electric field distribution of a vacuum interrupter with arc shield more accurately, 3-dimensional finite element method(FEM) is used. The induced electric potentials of floating shield was increased with the gap distance, which is because the relative position of shield is closer to the fixed contact so that the capacitance distribution inside interrupter is varied. The calculated results also show that the induced potential of shield causes electric field distortion so that the maximum value of electric field in a vacuum interrupter with arc shield is higher than that without one.

  • In this paper, electromagnetic fields of a linear induction motor with cage-type secondary are analyzed by the finite element method. Contact resistances between end-bars and secondary conductors are considered in the finite element analysis. The field quantify is a magnetic vector potential transformed into a phasor form. As a result, the sensitivities of a phase current thrust and normal force are presented according to the variation of the contact resistance.

  • In this study, zinc tin oxide (ZTO) thin-film transistors are researched to observe the correlation between the barrier potential and electrical properties. Although much research has been conducted on the electronic radiation from Schottky contacts in semiconductor devices, research on electronic radiation that occurs at voltages above the threshold voltage is lacking. Furthermore, the current phenomena occurring below the threshold voltage need to be studied. Bidirectional transistors exhibit current flows below the threshold voltage, and studying the characteristics of these currents can help understand the problems associated with leakage current. A factor that affects the stability of bidirectional transistors is the potential barrier to the Schottky contact. It has been confirmed that Schottky contacts increase the efficiency of the element in semiconductor devices, by cutting off the leakage current, and that the recombination at the PN junction is closely related to the Schottky contacts. The bidirectional characteristics of the transistors are controlled by the space-charge limiting currents generated by the barrier potentials of the SiOC insulated film. Space-charge limiting currents caused by the tunneling phenomenon or quantum effect are new conduction mechanisms in semiconductors, and are different from the leakage current.
