  • Background: Robot-assisted gait training (RAGT) is an effective method for walking rehabilitation. Additionally, the body weight support (BWS) system reduces muscle fatigue while walking. However, no previous studies have investigated the effects of RAGT with BWS on isokinetic strength of quadriceps and hamstring muscles. Objects: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of torque, work, and power on the quadriceps and hamstring muscles during RAGT, using the BWS of three conditions in healthy subjects. The three different BWS conditions were BWS 50%, BWS 20%, and full weight bearing (FWB). Methods: Eleven healthy subjects (7 males and 4 females) participated in this study. The Walkbot_S was used to cause fatigue of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles and the Biodex Systems 4 Pro was used to measure the isokinetic torque, work, and power of them. After RAGT trials of each of the three conditions, the subjects performed isokinetic concentric knee flexion and extension, five at an angular velocity of 60°/s and fifteen at an angular velocity of 180°/s. One-way repeated analysis of variance was used to determine significant differences in all the variables. The least significant difference test was used for post-hoc analysis. Results: On both sides, there were significant differences in peak torque (PT) of knee extension and flexion between the three BWS conditions at an angular velocity of 60°/s and 180°/s conditions. A post-hoc comparison revealed that the PT in the BWS 50% was significantly greater than in the BWS 20% and the FWB and the PT in the BWS 20% was significantly greater than in the FWB. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that the lower BWS during RAGT seems to lower the isokinetic torque, work, and power of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles because of the muscle fatigue increase.

  • In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of a taping method to relieve low back pain (LBP) by comparing changes in visual analog scale (VAS) and disability index (Disa) between untreated, control, and treated groups. As a result, the efficacy of taping was confirmed in both the control and treatment groups. ANOVA analysis of VAS revealed significant differences between groups, and post hoc tests revealed significant differences in the untreated group and both the control and treatment groups, but no significant differences between the control and treatment groups. This demonstrates similar effectiveness of both taping methods on alleviating LBP. For Disa, ANOVA showed a significant difference, but post hoc tests did not confirm this. The within-group t-test showed significant differences in VAS and Disa in the control and treatment groups before and after the intervention, but not in the untreated group. This study highlights the efficacy of taping for LBP and suggests that both methods can be used clinically. Future studies should use larger samples and different conditions to verify these findings.

  • PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to identify the immediate effect of posterior pelvic tilt taping on anterior pelvic inclination, gait function, and balance in chronic stroke patients. METHODS: Fourteen chronic stroke subjects were enrolled in this study. Subjects who consented to participate in this cross-over experiment were assigned three interventions: posterior pelvic tilt taping, placebo taping, and no taping, in random order. After tape application, subjects were asked to complete: 1) Anterior pelvic tilt measurement, 2) 10-Meter Walk test, and 3) Limits of stability (LOS) test. To eliminate the learning effect of the tape after tearing off the tape, a 10 minute break was given between posterior pelvic tilt taping intervention and placebo taping intervention. RESULTS: Significant decreases were observed for the anterior pelvic inclination on both sides after posterior pelvic tilt taping application compared with placebo taping and no taping application (p<.05). Post hoc test results differed significantly in the 10-meter walk test after intervention (p<.05). However, there were no significant differences in limits of stability test after intervention (p>.05). CONCLUSION: Posterior pelvic tilt taping in chronic stroke patients decreases the inappropriate anterior pelvic inclination immediately and improves gait function, but it has little effect on balance.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the reosseointegration periods when the rough surface implants, which had complete bone-implant ankylosis, suddenly losed the osseointegration. Materials and Methods: The implants with RBM surface treatment were inserted into both tibias of 23 rabbits. Two implants were submerged into each side. After six weeks, the primary removal torque was measured by Digital torque gauge, and then the implants were replaced and submerged to estimate the level of reosseointegration. After assigned healing periods for each group, the removal torque was measured again. BIC (Bone-Implant contact, %) ratio was measured through histomorphometric analysis.Paired t-test was processed by SPSS 14.0. One-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test was processed to analyze statistically significant differences among the groups. Results: In comparison with the primary removal torque, the secondary removal torque was increased after 11 days and significantly increased from 2 weeks. In fluorochrome labeling, the origin of mineralization was observed after 7 days, which showed as fluorescent bands around the bone-implant interfaces. After 11 days, the bone formation was apparent, and it is increased continuously with the passage of the time. Conclusion: In 11 days after the implant replacement, the secondary removal torque was almost as same as the primary value, and was significantly higher from 2 weeks. The mineralized shapes were observed in 7 days after the implant replacement, and then the bone formation appeared visibly in 11 days.

  • Psycho-educational interventions are not a substitute for analgesics, but they may serve as adjuvant therapy. Nurses can provide psychoeducational programmes to cancer patients to assist them in optimizing behavior that strengthen adjustment. The aim here was to determine the effects of psychoeducation on levels of adjustment to cancer in stage I-II breast cancer patients who met the study criteria (experimental group: 38 women, control group:38 women). The psychoeducational program consisted of eight 90 minute weekly sessions and data were collected using a questionnaire and the Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale three times: before, six weeks and six months after the intervention. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistical methods as well as the Chi square test, the Mann Whitney U test, repeated measures analysis of variance, the matched pairs t test and the Post Hoc Bonferroni test. The results at 6 weeks and 6 months after the program revealed that the experimental group had higher levels of "fighting spirit", lower levels of "helplessness/hopelessness, anxious preoccupation and fatalism" but there was no significant change in levels of "avoidance/denial" compared to the control group with regard to adjustment to cancer. In this study, psychoeducation was shown to cause positive changes in levels of adjustment to cancer in breast cancer patients
