In this paper, the effect of wrinkling on the cut propagation direction of thin membrane was studied using geometrically nonlinear shell element post-buckling analysis. In the analysis, rectangular tensile membrane configuration with a slanted center cut was considered. The cut propagation direction was predicted by maximum energy release rate method, $K_{II}$-zero method, and maximum tangential stress method. The cut propagation angle and the $J$-integral values were calculated for the wrinkled and unwrinkled cases and the results were compared. Various initial cut orientation angles were considered and the effect on the propagation direction was studied. The cut propagation paths were also predicted by virtual cut extension approach.

The structural design of the ships includes two main issues which should be checked carefully, namely the extreme structural response (yielding & buckling) and the fatigue structural response. Even if the corresponding failure modes are fundamentally different, the overall methodologies for their evaluation have many common points. Both issues require application of two main steps: deterministic calculations of hydro-structure interactions for given operating conditions on one side and the statistical post-processing in order to take into account the lifetime operational profile, on the other side. In the case of ultra large ships such as the container ships and in addition to the classical quasi-static type of structural responses the hydroelastic structural response becomes important. This is due to several reasons among which the following are the most important: the increase of the flexibility due to their large dimensions (Lpp close to 400 m) which leads to the lower structural natural frequencies, very large operational speed (> 20 knots) and large bow flare (increased slamming loads). The correct modeling of the hydroelastic ship structural response, and its inclusion into the overall design procedure, is significantly more complex than the evaluation of the quasi static structural response. The present paper gives an overview of the different tools and methods which are used in nowadays practice.

For non-linear analysis of stiffened shell structures, the total Lagrangian formulation is presented based upon the degenerated shell element. Geometrically correct formulation is developed by updating the direction of normal vectors and taking into account second order rotational terms in the incremental displacement field. Assumed strain concept is adopted in order to overcome shear locking phenomena and to eliminate spurious zero energy mode. The post-buckling behaviors of stiffened shell structures are traced by modeling the stiffener as a shell element and considering general transformation between the main structure and the stiffener at the connection node. Numerical examples to demonstrate the accuracy and the effectiveness of the proposed shell element are presented and compared with references' results.
The primary purpose of using bracings is to improve the lateral rigidity of main structural system, i.e., columns and beams, by reinforciing them with much smaller members. In conventional design methods brackings are considered as tension-only members, since difficulties arise in the analysis when the P-.DELTA. effects and post-buckling behaviour of the bracing members are taken into account. This is particulary true fox X-bracings. Recently, however, both analytical and experimental studies have been conducted to investigate the more precise and real behaviour of bracing members, especially for the nonlinear and plastic behaviour under cyclic loads. In this study, an analytical model is proposed to investigate the nonlinear behavior of steel bracing members subjected to cyclic loads. Results of the analysis were compared with previous experimental results, and good agreements were obtained between these results.
Seismic isolation is often used in protecting mission-critical structures including hospitals, data centers, telecommunication buildings, etc. Such structures typically house vibration-sensitive equipment which has to provide continued service but may fail in case sustained accelerations during earthquakes exceed threshold limit values. Thus, peak floor acceleration is one of the two main parameters that control the design of such structures while the other one is peak base displacement since the overall safety of the structure depends on the safety of the isolation system. And in case peak base displacement exceeds the design base displacement during an earthquake, rupture and/or buckling of isolators as well as bumping against stops around the seismic gap may occur. Therefore, obtaining accurate peak floor accelerations and peak base displacement is vital. However, although nominal design values for isolation system and superstructure parameters are calculated in order to meet target peak design base displacement and peak floor accelerations, their actual values may potentially deviate from these nominal design values. In this study, the sensitivity of the seismic performance of structures equipped with linear and nonlinear seismic isolation systems to the aforementioned potential deviations is assessed in the context of a benchmark shear building under different earthquake records with near-fault and far-fault characteristics. The results put forth the degree of sensitivity of peak top floor acceleration and peak base displacement to superstructure parameters including mass, stiffness, and damping and isolation system parameters including stiffness, damping, yield strength, yield displacement, and post-yield to pre-yield stiffness ratio.

In this studies, Dapped End Beams(DEB) having disturbed regions were designed by using strut tie model, and the main purpose of this paper is that whether T-headed bars and Steel fibers will be present or not. The ability of DEB with T-headed bars have a superior performance rather than others, such as improved ductility, larger energy adsorption and enhanced post-peak load carrying capability. The capacity of DEB with steel fibers also show increase of ductility, shear strength, fatigue strength and crack. Each DEB with both headed bars and steel fibers, headed bars, and steel fibers as a substitute reinforced steel in the disturbed regions and a DEB with only stirrup and tie reinforced steel were comparable. In contrast, the headed bar stirrups, the tie headed bars and the reinforced steel fibers did not lose their anchorage and hence were able to develop strain hardening and also served to delay buckling of the flexural compression steel. Excellent load-deflection predictions were obtained by increasing the tension stiffening effect to account for high load effects.

This paper proposes an innovative thin-walled square concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) column with an octagonal/circular lining steel tube, in which the outer steel tube and the inner liner are fabricated independently of each other and connected by slot-weld or self-tapping screw connections. Twelve thin-walled square CFST columns were tested under quasi-static loading, considering the parameters of liner type, connection type between the square tube and liner, yield strength of steel tube, and the axial load ratio. The seismic performance of the thin-walled square CFST columns is effectively improved by the octagonal and circular liners, and all the liner-stiffened specimens showed an excellent ductile behavior with the ultimate draft ratios being much larger than 1/50 and the ductility coefficients being generally higher than 4.0. The energy dissipation abilities of the specimens with circular liners and self-tapping screw connections were superior to those with octagonal liner and slot-weld connections. Based on the test results, both the finite element (FE) and simplified theoretical models were established, considering the post-buckling strength of the thin-walled square steel tube and the confinement effect of the liners, and the proposed models well predicted the hysteretic behavior of the liner-stiffened specimens.

In this study, lateral-torsional buckling (LTB) strength of high-strength H-beams built up from 800MPa tensile-strength steel was experimentally and analytically evaluated according to current lateral stability provisions (KBC 2009, AISC-LRFD 2010). The motivation was to evaluate whether or not current LTB provisions, which were originally developed for ordinary steel with different stress-strain characteristics, are still applicable to high-strength steel. Two sets of compact-section specimens with relatively low (Set A) or high (Set B) warping stiffness were prepared and tested under uniform moment loading. Laterally unbraced lengths of the test specimens were controlled such that inelastic LTB could be induced. All specimens exhibited LTB strength exceeding the minimum limit required by current provisions by a sufficient margin. Moreover, some specimen in Set A reached a rotation capacity required for plastic design, although its laterally unbraced length belonged to the inelastic LTB range. All the test results indicated that extrapolation of current provisions to high-strength steel is conservative. In order to further analyze the test results, the relationship between inelastic moment and laterally unbraced length was also derived in explicit form for both ordinary- and high-strength steel based on the effective tangent modulus of inelastic section. The analytical relationship derived again showed that extrapolation of current laterally unbraced length limit leads to a conservative design in the case of high-strength steel and that the laterally unbraced length to control the inelastic LTB behavior of high-strength steel beam should be specified by including its unique post-yield strain-hardening characteristics.
In this study, the explicit numerical algorithm was proposed to simulate the stress erection process and ultimate-load analysis of the strarch (stressed arch) system. The strarch system is a unique and innovative structural system and member prestress comprising prefabricated plane truss frames erected through a post-tensioning stress erection procedure. The flexible bottom chord, which has sleeve and gap details, is closed by the reaction force of the prestressing tendon. The prestress imposed on the tendon will enable the strarch system to be erected. This post-tensioning process is called "stress erection process." During this process, plastic rigid-body rotation occurs to the flexible top chord due to the excessive amount of plastic strain, and the structural characteristic is unstable. In this study, the dynamic relaxation method (DRM) was adopted to calculate the nonlinear equilibrium equation of the system, and a displacement-based finite-element-formulated filament beam element was used to simulate the nonlinear behavior of the top chord sections of the strarch system. The section of the filament beam element was composed by the amount of filaments, which can be modeled by various material models. The Ramberg-Osgood and bilinear kinematic elastic plastic material models were formulated for the nonlinear material behaviors of the filaments. The numerical results that were obtained in the present study were compared with the experiment results of the stress erection and with the results of the ultimate-load analysis of the strarch unit frame. The results of the present studies are in good agreement with the previous experiment results, and the explicit DRM enabled the analysis of the post-buckling behaviors of the strarch unit frame.
In this paper, large-deformation elasto-plastic analysis of space frames that considersjoint connection properties is presented. This method is based on the large-deformation formula with finite rotation, which was developed initially for elastic systems, and is extended herein to include the elasto-plastic effect and the member joint connection properties of semi-rigid what?. The analytical method was derived from the Eulerian concept, which takes into consideration the effects of large joint translations and rotations. The localmember force-deformation relationships were obtained from the beam-column approach, and the change caused by the axial strain in the member chord lengths and flexural bowing were taken into account. The effect of the axial force of the member on bending and torsional stiffness, and on the plastic moment capacity, is included in the analysis. The material is assumed to be ideally elasto-plastic, and yielding is considered concentrated at the member ends in the form of plastic hinges. The semi-rigid properties of the member joint connection are considered based on the power or linear model. The arc length method is usedto trace the post-buckling range of the elastic and elasto-plastic problems with the semi-rigid connection. A sample non-linear buckling analysis was carried out with the proposed space frame formulations to demonstrate the potential of the developed method in terms of its accuracy and efficiency.
