  • Thin-walled square concrete-filled double steel tubular (CFDST) columns composed of the inner circular tube filled with concrete can be used to carry the large axial loads or strengthen existing CFST columns in composite constructions. This paper reports an experimental program carried out on short square CFDST columns loaded concentrically. The influences of important column parameters on the post-buckling performance of such columns are investigated. Test results exhibit that the inner circular tube significantly improves the ultimate loads and the ductility of such columns compared to conventional concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST) and double-skin CFST (DCFST) columns with an inner void. A mathematical model developed is used to simulate the ultimate strengths and load-strain curves of such columns loaded axially. Furthermore, the ultimate strengths of such columns are predicted using existing codified design models for conventional CFST columns as well as the formulas proposed by previous researchers and compared against a large database comprising 500 CFDST columns. Lastly, an accurate artificial neural network model is developed for the practical applications of such columns under axial loading.

  • The primary objective of this paper is to trace the post-buckling behavior of space trusses in the inelastic range. Modeled member material behavior characteristics of struts in the post-critical elasto-plastic stage are determined and three types of idealized hardening rules are described. To perform this analysis, the present work is used the current stiffness parameter method combined with the cylinderical arc-length method. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the accuracy and the application of the numerical solutions introduced above.

  • For the post-buckling and elasto-plastic analysis of shell structures, the total Lagrangian formulation is presented based upon the degenerated shell element. Geometrically correct formulation is developed by updating the direction of normal vectors in the iteration process and evaluating the total Green-Lagrange stain corresponding U total displacements. In the calculation of the stiffness matrix, the element formulation takes into account the effect of finite rotation increments by retaining second order rotation terms in the incremental displacement field. The selective or reduced integration scheme using the heterosis element is applied in order to overcome both shear locking phenomena and the zero energy mode. The load/displacement incremental scheme is adopted for geometric non-linear F .E. analysis. Based on such methodology, the computer program is developed and numerical examples to demonstrate the accuracy and the effectiveness of the proposed shell element are presented and compared with references's results.

  • The present study is concerned with the application of dynamic relaxation method in the investigation of the large deflection behavior of spatial structures. This numerical algorithm do not require the computation or formulation of any tangent stiffness matrix. The convergence to the solution is achieved by using only vectorial quantities and no stiffness matrix is required in its overall assembled form. In an effort to evaluate the merits of the methods, extensive numerical studies were carried out on a number of selected structural systems. The advantages of using dynamic relaxation methods, in tracing the post-buckling behavior of spatial structures, are demonstrated.

  • In this study, it is investigated the thermal post-buckling characteristics of step-formed FG panel under the heat and supersonic flow. Material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent as well as continuously varying in the thickness direction of the panel according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of the constituent. First-order shear deformation theory(FSDT) of plate is applied to model the panel, and the von Karman strain-displacement relations are adopted to consider the geometric nonlinearity due to large deformation. Also, the first-order piston theory is used to model the supersonic aerodynamic load acting on a panel. Numerical results are summarized to reveal the thermal post-buckling behaviors of FG panels with various volume fractions, temperature conditions and aerodynamic pressures in detail.

  • A new load/displacement parameter method is proposed for the simultaneous control of applied loads and structural displacements at one or more points. The procedure is based on a generalized Riks' method, which utilizes load/displacement parameters as scaling factors to analyze post-buckling phenomena including snap-through or snap-back. The convergence characteristics are improved by employing new relaxation factors through an incremental displacement parameter, particularly in a region that exhibits severe numerical instability. The improved performance is illustrated by means of a numerical example.

  • In the present study, the finite strip analysis of a box girder to simulate a ship's hull model is carried out to investigate its inelastic post-buckling behavior and to predict its ultimate flexural strength. Residual stresses and initial geometrical imperfections are both considered in the combined material and geometrical nonlinear analysis. The von-Mises yield criterion and the Prandtl-Reuss flow theory of plasticity are applied in modeling the elasto-plastic behavior of material. The Newton-Raphson iterative process is also employed in the analysis to achieve convergence. The numerical results agree well with the experimental data. The effects of some material and geometrical parameters on the ultimate strength of the structure are also investigated.

  • This paper presents the results of an investigation into the post-buckling behaviour and ultimate strength of imperfect corroded steel plates used in ship and other marine-related structures. A series of elastic-plastic large deflection finite element analyses is performed on randomly corroded steel plates. The effects of general corrosion on both sides of the plates are introduced into the finite element models using a random thickness surface model. The effects on plate compressive strength as a result of parametric variation of the corroded surface geometry are evaluated. A proposal on the effective thickness is concluded in order to estimate the ultimate strength and explore the post-buckling behaviour of randomly corroded steel plates under uniaxial compression.

  • Static stability behaviors of annular sandwich plates constructed from two layers of particle-reinforced nanocomposites have been investigated in the present article. The type of nanoscale particles has been considered to be graphene oxide powders (GOPs). The particles are assumed to have uniform and graded dispersions inside the matrix and the material properties have been defined according to Halpin-Tsai micromechanical model. The core layer is assumed to have honeycomb configuration. Annular plate has been formulated according to thin shell assumptions considering geometrical nonlinearities. After solving the governing equations via Galerkin's technique, it is showed that the post-buckling curves of annular sandwich plates rely on the core wall thickness, amount of GOP particles, sector radius, and thickness of layers.
