Leverage and Corporate Failure: Analysis of Leverage Impact according to Company Size through Survival Analysis (레버리지와 기업실패: 생존분석을 응용한 기업규모에 따른 레버리지 영향분석)

  • Survival analysis was used to analyze whether there is a difference in the effect of leverage on corporate failure according to the firm size. A total of 25,250 (year-company) companies listed on the Korea Stock Exchange and KOSDAQ market from 1999 to 2019 were analyzed. First, the increase in leverage generally acts as a factor that increases the possibility of corporate failure. On the other hand, the increase in the trade payable ratio lowered the possibility of failure of the company. The increase in corporate trade payable was perceived as a factor in reducing the possibility of corporate failure because it was considered the active development of business activities or active use of interest-free debt rather than leading to an increase in corporate risk. Second, a higher leverage ratio and trade payable ratio in large firms lowered the possibility of corporate failure. In the SMEs, all types of leverage increases are a factor that increases corporate failure. Overall, the effect of leverage on corporate failure differs according to the size of the company.

  • Dynamic response of high-speed railway bridges is important due to the possibility of resonance from continuous and repeated action of high-speed train running. The designer's decision and application affect the result of dynamic analysis significantly, therefore guideline for dynamic analysis is required. On the purpose of the selection of resonable model for dynamic analysis, this study investigated load distribution effect.

Characterization of Sheet Formation by Image Analysis (화상분석 시스템을 이용한 지필도 평가)

  • The possibility of the characterization of sheet formation by image analysis with transmitted light was evaluated. Specific perimenter, average perimeter and variation could not be used to predict the sheet formation because there were no corrleation. Although image analysis method still have a lot of problems , it was found that the contrast intensity obtained by image analysis with transmitted light can be used to predict the sheet formation. In the case of highly filled sheet, the intensity of transmitted light was too low to characterize the sheet formation . However, it was possible to characterize the formation of unfilled heavy weight paper($\leq$200g/㎡).

  • The purpose of the current research is to evaluate the possibility of landslides by using geo-spatial information system. Geological information has been summarized and stability analysis for infinite slopes has been conducted based on the force equilibrium. In addition, the analysis of landslides was performed based on probabilistic approach by using probabilistic variables which can include uncertainty of input parameters. For the purpose of testifing the applicability of the analysis method actual geological data from a construction site was obtained, thereby performing both a preliminary analysis for a large area and detailed analysis for a better result. As a result of the current analysis several issues such as the possibility of development of landslides, detailed analysis of where landslides are most likely to be developed were analysed by using two concepts of safety and index of failure probability.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the possibility to characterize and classify waxes applied on some type of cheeses to obtain good stability during handling and transportation. Generally, waxes are obtained from the petrochemical industry, nowadays there is the possibility to also use biodegradable waxes produced from microorganisms. Preliminary studies were carried out to optimize sample presentation in NIR analysis, such as melting conditions (influence of temperature) and coat thickness of wax. 12 waxes (biodegradable or not) were analysed by using an InfraAlyzer 500 (Bran+Luebbe). The sample size was performed cutting pieces of 1.5 cm (height) x 1.5 cm (width) x 1.5 mm (thickness), previously melted at 9$0^{\circ}C$. NIR spectra were collected at room temperature, and data were processed by Sesame Software (Bran+Luebbe) to evaluate qualitative differences among samples by cluster analysis. Waxes were gathered on the basis of their origin (petrochemical or microbial). To better understand the significance of the NIRS bands discriminating among waxes, a two-dimensional correlation with FT-IR spectra, collected by a FT-IR/ATR 420 (JASCO) instrument, was made using 2DCORR program (Galactic Industries). On the basis of its classification power, NIRS appears to be a promising tool when used in routine analysis for a qualitative control of raw materials.

Determinants of Employee's Promotion at University Hospitals in South Korea (대학병원 직원 승진결정요인 분석)

  • Purposes: The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors which affect the promotion of the employees working at university hospitals in Korea. Methodology: The data of this study were obtained from personnel management database of 1,634 employees working at 4 university hospitals owned by an education foundation located in the City of Seoul and Kyoung-kee Province. The collected data were analyzed using frequency analysis, correlation analysis and probit regression analysis using SAS 9.4. Findings: The main findings of the study were as follows: First, appraisal score of the employees was the most important factors affect the possibility of the promotion and the following variables of tenure, higher degree, number of transfers, managers were also found to have significant effect on the possibility of the promotion. Second, Impact of those are varied among promotion ladders and the occupations like nurses, administrative staff, and technicians, which revealed that the important competency needed for the promotion was different. Practical Implications: The study results imply that, in order to motivate the employees through the promotion system at university hospitals, it is strongly recommended to use different criteria for evaluating the employees' performance and qualification for the promotion in terms of the promotion ladder and the characteristics of each occupation.

Factors on the Suicidal Attempt by Gender of Middle and High School Student (남녀 중.고등학생의 자살시도 예측요인)

  • Purpose: The suicide rate of adolescents in Korea is increasing annually. Therefore, this research was done to identify the suicide attempt rate of middle and high school students and to identify factors that influence suicidal attempts. Methods: The Korea Youth Health Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (2007) was used as data. Discriminant analysis and logistic regression were performed to analyze the data depending on gender to consider the gender difference in assessing the influence of each independent variable on suicidal attempts. Results: Discriminant analysis according on gender showed that 13 factors correlated with suicidal attempts for boys, and 20 factors for girls. The most highly correlated factors were smoking, depression and inhalation experience. For inhalation experience, boys had 2.7 times higher possibility of suicide attempts (95% CI 1.8-3.0) and girls, a 2.4 times higher possibility (95% CI 1.7-3.5). Conclusion: The results of the study indicate a need to classify adolescents for expectation of suicide risk and high danger for suicidal attempts through, and introduce suicide prevention programs for these adolescents. In particular, it is necessary to start intervention with students who smoke, have sexual and inhalation experiences and high levels of depression.

An Analysis of Business Management in the Farming Service Company (위탁영농회사의 사업실태 및 경영성과 분석)

  • This study was carried out to find out the possibility of continuity of the Farming Service Company (FSC), which has been founding since 1991 by the public administration to obtain the scale economy in the rice production, through the only financial analysis of the FSC. The results obtained were as follows. 1. The FSC's business is forward to the off-farm business rather than farm business. Based on the profit ratio, the profit ratio of off-farm business is more than that of farm business. It may cause the difficulty of policy to obtain the scale economy in the farming through the FSC. 2. Without subsidies the average net profit of the FSC was negative, which may provide the motives to the FSC to seek out the way to survive through the off-farm business, unless the FSC's could break up. 3. After all, the possibility of continuity of the FSC through the only financial analysis seems to be very little. Therefore the public administration should reconsider the present policy which is to found the more FSC continuously. If government wants to support the FSC continuously, government should focus on the conglomeration of farm land to increase the productivity of farming and on the subsidy of off-farm business to increase the profit ratio of the FSC.

Aircraft derivative design optimization considering global sensitivity and uncertainty of analysis models

  • Aircraft manufacturing companies have to consider multiple derivatives to satisfy various market requirements. They modify or extend an existing aircraft to meet new market demands while keeping the development time and cost to a minimum. Many researchers have studied the derivative design process, but these research efforts consider baseline and derivative designs together, while using the whole set of design variables. Therefore, an efficient process that can reduce cost and time for aircraft derivative design is needed. In this research, a more efficient design process is proposed which obtains global changes from local changes in aircraft design in order to develop aircraft derivatives efficiently. Sensitivity analysis was introduced to remove unnecessary design variables that have a low impact on the objective function. This prevented wasting computational effort and time on low priority variables for design requirements and objectives. Additionally, uncertainty from the fidelity of analysis tools was considered in design optimization to increase the probability of optimization results. The Reliability Based Design Optimization (RBDO) and Possibility Based Design Optimization (PBDO) methods were proposed to handle the uncertainty in aircraft conceptual design optimization. In this paper, Collaborative Optimization (CO) based framework with RBDO and PBDO was implemented to consider uncertainty. The proposed method was applied for civil jet aircraft derivative design that increases cruise range and the number of passengers. The proposed process provided deterministic design optimization, RBDO, and PBDO results for given requirements.

A Study for Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disorders Using Digital Human Simulation in the Shipbuilding Industry (Digital Human Simulation을 이용한 근골격계질환 예방에 관한 연구 -조선업을 대상으로-)

  • In this study digital human models of ship construction tasks using modeling & simulation were constructed and human models' activities through human activity analysis were evaluated. Human Factors experts analyzed the actual workers' tasks using the same technique used in human activity analysis at the same time. The main objective of this study is to check a possibility of applying digital human modeling technique to ship construction tasks that are mostly non-standardized(not uniformed) whereas most applications of digital human modeling technique have been applied to standardized tasks. We evaluated postures of both real workers and digital humans by RULA. It turned out that the final scores of RULA evaluation on real workers are the same as the RULA scores for digital humans. However, there were differences of RULA detail scores between real workers and digital humans in the several processes related with the wrist twist and deviations. Those differences are considered to be resulted from the error in the on-site measuring worker's body dimension which could be reduced by accurate tools to correct data for body dimension and digital real drawings for facilities. The results showed possibility of application of digital human modeling and ergonomic analysis on informal work operations as well as formal operations in the shipbuilding industry.
