Characterization of a Positive Regulatory cis-Element and Transacting Factors for the Hepatitis B Viral Pregenomic Promoter

  • Transcription of hepatitis B viral pregenomic promoter is known to be regulated mainly by the combined interaction of enhancers I, II and the intervening regulatory sequences between the two enhancers. A positive regulatory element was identified by serial deletion and measuring the linked chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) activities, which overlapped with the 5' region of the X open reading frame. When the positive regulatory element was inserted upstream of the SV40 early promoter, it elevated SV40 promoter activity in HepG2 cells. Two cellular proteins of 110 (p110) and 33 (p33) kDa interacted with the positive element and both of them were present in the nucleus, but p110 also existed in the cytoplasm in phosphorylated form. Dephosphorylation of p110 by acid phosphatase enhanced the DNA-binding activity of p110. The p33 could bind to single-strand DNA specifically as well as to double-strand DNA.

  • An (additive) commutative monoid is called atomic if every given non-invertible element can be written as a sum of atoms (i.e., irreducible elements), in which case, such a sum is called a factorization of the given element. The number of atoms (counting repetitions) in the corresponding sum is called the length of the factorization. Following Geroldinger and Zhong, we say that an atomic monoid M is a length-finite factorization monoid if each b ∈ M has only finitely many factorizations of any prescribed length. An additive submonoid of ℝ≥0 is called a positive monoid. Factorizations in positive monoids have been actively studied in recent years. The main purpose of this paper is to give a better understanding of the non-unique factorization phenomenon in positive monoids through the lens of the length-finite factorization property. To do so, we identify a large class of positive monoids which satisfy the length-finite factorization property. Then we compare the length-finite factorization property to the bounded and the finite factorization properties, which are two properties that have been systematically investigated for more than thirty years.

An Analysis of the Correlation of Engineering Education Major College Students' Technological Problem Solving Tendency between Technological Problem Solving Capability (공학 교육 전공 대학생의 기술적 문제 해결 성향과 기술적 문제 해결력 간의 상관 관계 분석)

  • This study has the purpose to identify the correlation of engineering education major college students' technological problem solving tendency between technological problem solving capability. To that end, the technological problem solving tendencies of 79 students enrolled in engineering education related department in college of education, 'C' University located in Daejeon metropolitan city were examined, and the correlation of technological problem solving tendency between technological problem solving capability was analyzed through measurement of technological problem solving capability. As for the correlation among problem solving confidence a sub-element of technological problem solving tendency and technological problem solving capability, positive correlation was found in result 3, result 4 and result average. As for the correlation among approach-avoidance tendency a sub-element of technological problem solving tendency and technological problem solving capability, positive correlation was found in result 5 and result average. As for the correlation among self-control recognition degree the sub-element of technological problem solving tendency and technological problem solving capability, positive correlation was found in result 1, result 3 and result average. As for the correlation among problem solving tendency and technological problem solving capability, positive correlation was found in result 3, result 4, result 5 and result average.

Force transfer mechanism in positive moment continuity details for prestressed concrete girder bridges

  • The force transfer mechanism in positive moment continuity details for prestressed concrete girder bridges is investigated in this paper using a three-dimensional detailed finite element model. Positive moment reinforcement in the form of hairpin bars as recommended by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program Report No 519 is incorporated in the model. The cold construction joint that develops at the interface between girder ends and continuity diaphragms is also simulated via contact elements. The model is then subjected to the positive moment and corresponding shear forces that would develop over the service life of the bridge. The stress distribution in the continuity diaphragm and the axial force distribution in the hairpin bars are presented. It was found that due to the asymmetric configuration of the hairpin bars, asymmetric stress distribution develops at the continuity diaphragm, which can be exacerbated by other asymmetric factors such as skewed bridge configurations. It was also observed that when the joint is subjected to a positive moment, the tensile force is transferred from the girder end to the continuity diaphragm only through the hairpin bars due to the lack of contact between the both members at the construction joint. As a result, the stress distribution at girder ends was found to be concentrated around the hairpin bars influence area, rather than be resisted by the entire girder composite section. Finally, the results are used to develop an approach for estimating the cracking moment capacity at girder ends based on a proposed effective moment of inertia.

The CN-CH positive correlation in the globular cluster NGC 5286

  • We performed low-resolution spectroscopy for the red giant stars in the Galactic globular cluster (GC) NGC 5286, which is known to show intrinsic heavy element variations. We found that these stars are clearly divided into two subpopulations by CN index. These two subpopulations also show significant differences in the HK'and CH indices, where the CN-strong stars are more enhanced in both indices. From the comparison with high-resolution spectroscopic data of Marino et al. (2015), we found that the CN- and HK'-strong stars are also increased in the abundances of s-process elements and Fe. It appears that, therefore, these stars are later generation stars probably affected by supernova enrichment. In addition, NGC 5286 shows the CN-CH positive correlation among the whole sample, which is only discovered in the GCs with heavy element variations such as M22 and NGC 6273. Therefore, these results strengthen our previous suggestion that the CN-CH positive correlation may be associated with the heavy element variations in the GCs.

  • The purposes of this study is to classify retiree's job, leisure, and family attitude; to identify the characteristics of each attitude types; and to examine the retirement adaptation level of each attitude type. The major findings of the study are as follows: First, four attitude types can be categorized: 'the job involved attitude type', 'the total positive attitude type', 'the leisure positive attitude type', and 'the total negative attitude type'. Second, the result of the discriminant analysis shows that 'the job-family experience before retirement and number of unmarried children' element was the most crucial in classifying the retiree's attitude. And 'the retirement reception and individual resource element' was in orders of discrimination power Third, 'the total positive attitude type' is the highest level of retirement adaptation.

Characteristics of the transitional element contents for the ginsengs from the 3 different soils of Keumsan (금산의 서로 다른 3 토양내에 생육되는 인삼의 전이원소 함량 특성)

  • This study is for geochemical relationships between ginsengs and soils from three representative soil types from Keumsan, shale, phyllite and granite areas. For this study, ginsengs (2, 3 and 4 years), with the soils and their host rock, are collected and are analysed for the transitional elements. In the weathered soils, the shale area is high in the most of elements, but low in the granite area. High correlation relationships are shown in the shale area. In the field soils, the shale area is mainly high, but low in the granite area. Comparing with ages, most of elements are high in the 2 year soils, but low in the 4 year soils. Regardless of the localities, positive and negative correlations are dominant in the shale area. In the host rocks, high element contents are shown in the phyllite and shale areas. Positive and negative correlations are found in the shale and phyllite areas for large numbers of the element pairs. In the ginsengs, differences of the element contents with ages are not clear, but show high element contents in the 2 year ginsengs of the shale and phyllite areas, and low contents in the 4 year ginsengs of the granite area. Positive correlations are shown in the Cu-Zn pair in the shale and phyllite areas, and Co-Cu pair in the granite area. In the relative ratios(weathered soil/field soil), most of elements from the shale area are high, above I, suggesting high element contents in the weathered soils of the shale area relative to the granite and phyllite areas. In the relative ratios(weathered soil/host rock), most of elements are above 1, suggesting the high element contents in the weathered soils relative to the host rocks. Relative ratios (soil/ginseng) of the element contents are several to ten times. Regardless of the areas, big differences of the relative ratios are found in the Co and small differences are in the Cu and Zn, which suggest that differences between soils and ginsengs are big in the Co contents and small in the Cu and Zn contents. Regardless of the ages, differences among relative ratios are small in granite area relative to the shale area, which suggest more similar contents between ginsengs and soils in the granite areas.

The Effects on Flow at Using Robots of Introductory Programming Course (프로그래밍 초급과정에서 로봇의 활용이 몰입에 미치는 영향)

  • Introductory programming course using robots that makes good effect to learners. I investigated that the effects on flow at using robots of introductory programming course. According to experiment result, the flow level showed significant change and all of it's element(antecedents, experiences, effects) had changed significantly. This result means that using robots of introductory programming course makes effect that is very positive in flow level of learners. There was strong interrelation by each element of flow in the result of correlation analysis about flow element. In particular, interrelation of antecedents element and experience element was high. Therefore, using robot is precondition of flow, and the level of experience element is high according to level of antecedents, and also experience element elevate the learner's intrinsic satisfaction. The conclusion is that using robots of introductory programming course is helpful enhancing learner's flow level and is positive in study achievements.
