  • The positive column of a discharge tube filled with a mixture of mercury-xenon has a tendency to become contracted at room temperature. However, once the tube temperature is raised over 50 [$^{\circ}C$], the positive column changes from a contracted state to a diffused state. The xenon emission is stronger in the contracted positive column than in the diffused column. Alternatively, the mercury emission is more intense in the diffused positive column, and the luminance of the phosphor coating on the inner surface of the tube is higher than that in the contracted positive column. Moreover, higher luminance can be obtained by increasing the xenon pressure.

  • Luminous efficacy of 6.0 lm/W has been realized by introducing a spatial positive column discharge together with delayed D pulses, shared sustain pulse voltage, and low sustain frequency drive. Also a high speed addressing of $0.25{\mu}s$ was achieved. The luminance was $157cd/m^2$, which is high enough for a 260-in. FHD display.

  • The positive column discharge characteristics in the long gap (440 ${\mu}m$) are investigated based on the voltage distribution among three electrodes. In particular, the effects of the amplitude and width of the short pulse applied to the address electrode on the positive column discharge characteristics are examined intensively. By proper controlling of the amplitude and width of the address short pulse, it is found that the positive column discharge in the long gap is well constructed. As a result, under the stable static voltage margin condition, the firing and sustaining voltages are as low as those of conventional short gap(60 ${\mu}m$) discharge($V _f=220V$, $V_s=150V$) and the color purity is improved. Moreover, the luminous efficiency increases up to 60% in comparison with the conventional case.

  • ABSTRACT -- Recently, a method of magnetically-enhanced discharge columns is considered to increase the luminous efficacy of discharge lamps, which is based upon the face that the diffusion motion of charged particles in the discharge column strongly depends on the applied magnetic fields. This study investigates the effect of applied transverse magnetic fields on the light output of low-pressure Hg-Ar discharge. As a result, it is found that the electric field in the positive column increases according to the applied megnetic field, which causes an increase in the total light output. And this effect is much more pronounced upon the spectral line originating form the higher levels.

  • Plasma oscillation has been observed during the development of the glow discharge as detector for gas chromatography. The variation of oscillation frequency shows the better stability and detection limits than the changes in the dischange curent. To investigate the range of useful operating conditions and to gain insight into the mechanism, the effect of experimental parameters on plasma oscillation have been studied. This study includes the variation of discharge current, pressure and discharge gap. Frequency ranges of 10KHz to 10MHz have been observed with the various shapes of oscillation. Two kinds of mode for oscillation are observed with the variation of electrode gap at low pressure and low voltage.

  • In this paper we report on development of our original mercury-less fluorescent lamps for general lighting. These new-type lamps have multi-pairs of electrodes to maintain multi-discharge paths and to keep positive column diffused state. The omission characteristics oft the lamps were investigated. These discharge lamps were operated by pulsed discharge. By using multi-pairs of electrodes for xenon pulsed discharge fluorescent lamps, higher intensity of luminance was obtained than the conventional type of lamps using single pair of electrodes. Recently this type of lamp achieved over $9000\;cd/m^2$ and 50 lm/W.

  • The radial density distributions of the positive column of strongly modulated low -pressure gas discharges in mercury - rare gas mixtures at 10 tom pressure have been studied theoretically. The current was modulated inusoidally with a modulation depth of 50%. Calculations have shown that the radial profile of the excited atoms is ditferent form 0th Bessel function $J_0$(2.4r/R) and the invertion of the radial distribution of the excited atom can occur at some frequency. The hybrid method of FDM and 2nd order Runge-Kutta meth od is used for solving differenzial equations.

  • In this paper, the pulsed mode operated gas discharge tube is composed with mixed gas of Hg-Ne (10 Torr), in the tube of 15.0 mm outer diameter and has variable color from red to blue with changing frequency high voltage. As increasing frequency in the gas discharge tube, the phenomena, that the electron temperature in the positive column increases and the radiation from atoms of higher upper state energy levels increases, exist The color have the locus from red (0.4972, 0.3128) to blue (0.2736, 0.2619) in CIE chromacity diagram with increasing frequency. The method of changing frequency has been shown to be suitable for the luminous color control.

  • In this paper, pulsed discharge is used to control the luminous color in gas discharge tubes. The luminous color of the positive column in gas discharge tubes filled with Hg-Ar-Ne (1: 9, 60[Torr]) and having no phosphor material, varies from red to blue emitted by the Ne and Hg from the pulsed discharge. With changing of pulse-width and frequency, the electron temperature in the transient period affects changes to the residual ion and metastable atom densities. The first metastable atoms containing energy levels of about 16.6 [eV]have a very high probability that a collision will result in the ionization potential of Ar being 15.8 [eV]. The change of locus in the CIE chromaticity diagram with increasing pulse-width and frequency approves the variation of luminous color.
