  • The aim of this study was to compare electromyography activity for long and lateral heads of triceps brachii muscle according to forearm positions during different triceps strengthening exercises. The muscle activities for long and lateral head of triceps brachii were measured by surface electromyography. Fifteen healthy volunteers participated for this study and performed elbow extension in three different elbow extension exercises (elbow extension in a supine position; EES, elbow extension with shoulder abduction at 90 degrees in a prone position; EESA, and elbow extension with one arm at the side of the trunk in a prone position; EESP) and forearm positions (supination, neutral, and pronation). A two-way repeated measures ANOVA was used to compare the effects of the exercise positions and forearm positions. The EMG activities of the long head of the triceps brachii increased significantly during EESP with forearm supination, whereas the activity of the lateral head of the triceps brachii increased significantly during EESA with the forearm in a neutral position (p<.05). The results of this study suggest that exercise positions and forearm positions should be considered for selectively strengthening the long and lateral heads of triceps brachii muscles.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability and validity of pelvic tilting angle measurements using a smart phone-based inclinometer (Clino) compared to a palpation meter (PALM) in the standing and sitting position. This study used an interchangeable method with Clino to measure the pelvic tilting angle in the standing and sitting positions. Methods: Twenty healthy subjects were recruited. Measurements of the pelvic tilting angle in the standing and sitting positions were obtained by two examiners using the Clino and PALM. A resting session was conducted 10 minutes later to assess the intra and inter rater reliability. To assess validity of the measurement using Clino, a PALM was used as the gold standard. The intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to determine the intra and inter rater reliability of Clino and a PALM. To assess the validity, the Pearson correlation coefficients were used for two measurement techniques to measure the pelvic tilting angle in the standing and sitting positions. The statistical significance was set to ${\alpha}=0.05$. Results: Measurements of the pelvic tilt had high inter-rater reliability in the standing (ICC=0.82) and sitting (ICC=0.88) positions using Clino and intra-rater reliability in the standing (ICC=0.87) and sitting (ICC=0.91) positions using Clino. Measurements of the pelvic tilt had high validity by a comparison of PALM and Clino in the standing (r=0.83) and sitting (r=0.89) positions (p<0.05). Conclusion: The use of Clino can be recommended as a tool to replace the PALM and measure the pelvic tilt angle in the standing and sitting positions while maintaining the clinical reliability and validity.

  • Background: Ankle evertor muscles are important for preventing lateral ankle sprain. Since, the evertor muscles cross the ankle and toe joints, the position at which the ankle evertor muscle strength is measured is important. However, no studies have previously investigated the effect of ankle and toe positions on the strength of the ankle evertor muscle. Objects: This study is aimed to determine the effect of various ankle and toe joint positions on the strength of the ankle evertor muscles in healthy subjects. Methods: Eighteen healthy subjects participated in this study. Isometric ankle evertor strength of the dominant leg was determined in each subject in different ankle and toe positions (dorsiflexion (DF) with toe extension (TE), DF with toe flexion (TF), plantar flexion (PF) with TE, and PF with TF). A 2 by 2 repeated analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to determine the difference in the evertor strength between the ankle positions (PF and DF) and toe positions (TE and TF). Results: The results indicate that there was no significant ankle position by toe position interaction effect (p=.83). However, the ankle evertor strength was significantly increased in the ankle DF position than in the PF position (p<.01), and the ankle evertor strength during eversion with TE was significantly higher than eversion with TF (p<.01). Conclusion: The findings of this study suggest that clinicians should consider the ankle and toe positions when measuring the muscle strength and during performance of selective muscle strengthening exercises of the ankle evertor muscles.

  • Objectives : Bupleuri Radix (Siho) is prescribed as the root of different Bupleurum species on the pharmarcopoeia in Korea and China. Moreover, other species and varieties of the genus Bupleurum have been also distributed on the herbal market as Bupleuri Radix. However, due to the morphological similarity and frequent occurrence of intermediate forms, the correct identification of this radix is very difficult. To develop a reliable method for correct identification and improving the quality standards of official Bupleuri Radix, we analyzed sequences of the ribosomal RNA gene and internal transcribed spacer (rDNA-ITS) region. Methods : PCR amplification of rDNA-ITS region was performed using ITS1 and ITS4 primer from 6 Bupleurum species and 1 variety, B. falcatum L. (Siho), an improved breed of B. falcatum L. (Samdo-Siho), B. chinense DC. (Buk-Siho), B. scorzonerifolium Willd. (Nam-Siho), B. longiadiatum Turcz. (Gae-Siho), B. euphorbiodes Nakai (Deungdae-Siho) and B. latissimum Nakai (Seom-Siho), and nucleotide sequence was determined after sub-cloning into the pGEM-Teasy vector. Authentic marker nucleotides were estimated by the analysis of ClastalW using entire rDNA-ITS sequence of three samples per species. Results : In comparative analysis of the rDNA-ITS sequences, we found specific nucleotides to distinguish Korean (B. falcatum L. and its variety) and Chinese official species (B. chinense DC. and B. scorzonerifolium Willd.) from others at positions 411 and 447, and positions 89, 101, 415 and 599, respectively. Futhermore, we also found nucleotide indels (insertion and/or deletion) and substitutions to identify each of different Bupleurum species, 2 positions for B. falcatum L. and its variety, 6 positions for B. chinense DC., 49 positions for B. scorzonerifolium Willd., 8 positions for B. euphorbioides Nakai, 7 positions for B. longiradiatum Nakai and 9 positions for B. latissimum Nakai. These sequence differences at corresponding positions are avaliable nucleotide markers to determine the botanical origins of Bupleuri Radix. Moreover, we confirmed the phylogenetic relationship of B. latissimum Nakai, a Korean endemic speices, among Bupleurum species based on the rDNA-ITS sequence. Conclusions : These marker nucleotides would be useful to identify the official herbal medicines by the providing of definitive information that can identify each plant species and distinguish it from unauthentic adulterant Bupleurum species.

  • This paper presents a real-time motion restoration system for people who need remedial exercise of musculoskeletal based on Inverse Kinematics. A new approach is suggested to recognize a gesture based on restored human motion which is calculated the 3D positions of intermediate joints using 3D positions of body features estimated from images. For generating the 3D candidate positions of intermediate joints which cannot be extracted from images, we apply an Inverse Kinematics theory to compute the target position of intermediate joints. And we can reduce the number of candidate positions by applying the various physical constraints of body. Finally, we can generate the more accurate final position using the Kalman filter for a motion tracking and the relationship between the previous frame information and the candidate positions. The system provide motion information which are rotation angle and height in real-time, therefore the rehabilitation exercises can be performed based on the information and figured out proper exercise for individual status.

  • This paper has been presented the hydrodynamic effect by the journal speed, eccentricity and source positions in order to overcome the defects of air bearing such as low stiffness and damping coefficient. Choosing the two row source position of air bearing is different from existed investigations in the side of pressure distribution of air film because of the high speed of journal and the wedge effects by the eccentricity. These optimal chooses of the two row source positions enable us to improve the performance of the film reaction force and loading force as making the high speed spindle. In this paper, the pressure behavior in theory of air film according to the eccentricity of journal and the source positions analyzed. The theoretical analysis have been identified by experiments. The results of investigated characteristics may be applied to precision devices like ultra-precision grinding machine and ultra high speed milling.

  • This study was designed to investigate the effect of different hand positions on scapulothorcic muscle activities during push-up plus exercises. Fourteen healthy males performed push-up plus exercises under three conditions (neutral, $90^{\circ}$ internally rotated, and $90^{\circ}$ externally rotated hand positions), during which the activities of the serratus anterior, pectoralis major, and upper trapezius muscles were recorded using surface electromyography. The statistical significance at three different hand positions was tested by repeated one-way ANOVA. The mean activities of the serratus anterior increased and the mean activities of the pectoralis major decreased in the order of neutral hand position, internally rotated hand position, and externally rotated hand position. There was a significant difference during push-up plus between neutral and externally rotated hand positions as well as in the serratus anterior/pectoralis major activity ratio (p<.0.5). However, no significant differences were found in the activity of the upper trapezius muscle or the serratus anterior/upper trapezius activity ratio. We suggest that the push-up plus exercise performed in the externally rotated hand position could a beneficial strategy for selective strengthening of the serratus anterior muscle, while minimizing the activity of the pectoralis major muscle.

  • Design of shelter system requires consideration of noise at operators’ positions, because noise can injure person’s health. That is why studies which analyze and predict noise at operator’s positions is essential. To analyze noise sources of shelter system, this study measured noise of each equipment and obtained new equations by comparing the measured noise data and the equation which is relation noise and distance. The new equations predict noise level at operators’ positions. Actran analysis is performed to obtain noise level at operators’ positions too. At last, the noise level at operators’ positions measured in real shelter system is compared with the noise level predicted the new equations and Actran analysis.
