There is currently much interest in the development of instruments that emulate the senses of humans. Increasingly, there is demand for mimicking the human sense of smell, which is a sophisticated chemosensory system. An electronic nose system is applicable to a large area of industries including environmental monitoring. We have designed a protable electronic nose system using an array of commercial chemical gas sensors for recognizing and analyzing the various odours. In this paper, we have implemented a portable electronic nose system using an array of gas sensors for recognizing and analyzing VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) in the field. The accuracy of a portable electronic nose system may be lower than an instrument such as GC/MS (Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometer). However, a portable electronic nose system could be used on the field and showed fast response to pollutants in the field. Several different algorithms for odours recognition were used such as BP (Back-Propagation) or LM-BP (Levenberq-Marquardt Back-Propagation). We applied RBF (Radial Basis Function) Network for recognition and quantifying of odours, which has simpler and faster compared to the previously used algorithms such as BP and LM-BP.
In the present study, we developed a portable GC module for real-time, quantitative determinations of gas mixtures in air sample. Capillary or packed column was coiled together with a heater wire and thermocouple in a small case. Together with the small and light weight sensors and valves as well as the rechargeable carrier gas canister, which permits collection and separation of samples, this system can determine the components of complex mixtures of air contaminants at low concentrations with a duty cycle of 10 min. When measured the various samples with a FID and TCD, the system showed, for a capillary column, a good resolution (R=8.3), high sensitivity, reproducibility, and linear dynamic range greater than three orders of magnitude. These results indicate that the portable GC module is expected to be used for a wide range of applications, particularly for in situ environmental monitoring, chemical processes, and regulation of contaminant emission.
Purpose: Salivation is considered to be an important factor in the control of halitosis, and the amount of salivation has been shown to be closely related to the level of hydration. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the relationship between dehydration and halitosis. Methods: Twenty healthy young females with no dental problems were recruited. All participants were induced to become dehydrated and then over-hydrated. After inducing each hydration state, the severity of hydration and halitosis factor (organoleptic scores, amounts of resting and functional saliva, gas examinations, and tongue coatings) were measured. Hydration statuses were graded as dehydration, normal, or over-hydration according to urine osmolality. This was a cross sectional study with a cross over design. Results: The dehydrated status was associated with higher organoleptic scores than the normal or over-hydrated status (1.75±0.75 vs. 0.87±0.63, and 0.65±0.53, respectively. p<0.05). Mean values of CH3SH, (CH3)2S in portable gas chromatography for the dehydrated, normal, and over-hydrated status were 11.70±37.00, 6.75±13.50, and 2.80±5.87 nmol/mol, 10.50±15.59, 7.25±10.87, and 1.50±2.55 nmol/mol, respectively. p>0.05). (CH3)2S (r=0.410, p=0.009) showed a moderate positive correlation with dehydration status. The resting salivation rates were relatively lower for the dehydrated status than for the normal or overhydrated status (p>0.05), and tongue coating results were also higher for the dehydrated status (p>0.05). Conclusions: Dehydration status appears to be positively correlated with a low resting salivation rate and high portable gas chromatography results. This shows that dehydration might be an etiologic factor of halitosis.
Objective: The aim of this prospective, case-controlled study was to assess the difference of the amount of tongue coating between halitosis and non-halitosis patients using a digital tongue diagnosis system (DTDS). Methods: Sixty-five patients complaining of oral malodor were recruited for the study. The level of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) in the oral cavity of the patients was measured by a portable gas chromatography. All patients were then divided into two groups, the halitosis group ($H_2S{\geq}1.5ng$/10ml, or $CH_3SH{\geq}0.5ng$/10ml) and the non-halitosis group ($H_2S$<1.5ng/10ml and $CH_3SH$<0.5ng/10ml), according to the VSC level criteria published by Tonzetich. Tongue images of the two groups were acquired and analyzed by DTDS, followed by the analysis of the tongue coating scores. Results: The tongue coating scores of the halitosis group were significantly higher than of the non-halitosis group (P=0.033). Furthermore, the difference of the posterior tongue coating between the two groups was more significant (P=0.000). Conclusions: Halitosis patients were shown to have a thicker tongue coating than those in the non-halitosis group. Moreover, the posterior dorsum of the tongue should be observed more cautiously when dealing with halitosis patients. Also, the progress and state of the patient's symptom of halitosis as diagnosed objectively by the portable gas chromatography could also possibly be analyzed instead by the DTDS tongue coating score.
The importance of air quality monitoring is rapidly increasing. Even though state-of-the-art air quality monitoring technologies such as mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, and optical measurement enable high-fidelity measurement of air pollutants, they cannot be widely used for portable or personalized platforms because of their high cost and complexity. Recently, personalized and localized environmental monitoring, rather than global and averaged environmental monitoring, has drawn greater attention with the advancement of mobile telecommunication technologies. Here, micro- and nano-technologies enable highly integrated and ultra-compact sensors to meet the needs of personalized environmental monitoring. In this paper, several examples of MEMS-based gas sensors for compact and personalized air quality monitoring are explained. Additionally, the principles and usage of functional nanomaterials are discussed for highly sensitive and selective gas sensors.

The portable gas chromatography system was developed which was consisted of ambient vapor sampler(AVS), short capillary column(3 m long, 0.32 mm i.d. GC(SCCGC), photoionization detector (PID) and vacuum pump which was operated at subambient pressure. The seletion of capillary column was based on the theoretical calculation from Golay equation. The pressure ratio of column inlet and outlet appropriated between 1.03 and 1.2 in the system. The available column flow were 0.87∼4.63 ml/min at the pressure ratios. The AVS consisted of three concentric tubes and enables rapid, repetitive introduction of vapor samples directly into capillary column and showed good reproducibility. The subambient column outlet pressure with PID resulted in a significant increase in the optimum column flow, permitting rapid analysis. The baseline separation of m-xylene and o-xylene was able to within 40 second with the system. Parameters affecting the column resolving power were sampling duration, column length and diameter, and the pressure ratio. Effects of these parameters were investigated using bezene derivative compounds.
An automated on-line portable preconcentration-short column gas chromatograph was developed, which used preconcentrator using adsorption tube with Tenax-GR and Curie-point heating. The developed system operated with 3 steps of processing, preconcentration, thermal desorption, and analysis and cleaning, and could continued operating within 1~2 min cycle. The recoveries of preconcentrator for toluene was ranged between $94.7{\pm}6.6%$ and $103.8{\pm}3.1%$ with less than 7% of RSD. For benzene, toluene and xylene(BTX) standard gas test, IDL was 41, 49, $472ng/m^3$ benzene, toluene and o-xylene, respectively. The BTX mixture was analyzed within 30 sec with baseline separation by the system equipped with 4 m long capillary column. The deficiency of separation power caused by short column was solved by the control of sample injection volume and inlet/outlet pressure ratio. The automated portable preconcentration-short column gas chromatograph system was found to be useful for the continuous air monitoring of BTX at ppb levels in ambient air.

A compact and handhold near infrared (NIR) system using microspectrometer was developed. This system was suitable not only in the laboratory, but also in the field or in the process. This system was first applied for classification of geographical origin of herbal medicine such as ginseng and sesame. To identify the origin of ginseng on site, the portable NIR system is more suitable for real field application. For this study, using the compact NIR system, soft independent modeling of class analogies (SIMCA) with 1100-1750 nm NIR spectra was utilized for classification of geographical origin (Korea and China) of both ginseng and sesame. The accuracy of results is more than 90%. Quantitative analysis for petroleum such as toluene, benzene, tri-methyl benzene, and ethyl benzene was performed with partial least squares (PLS) regression with NIR 1100-1750 nm spectra. This study showed that the NIR method and gas chromatography (GC), which is a standard method, have good correlations. Furthermore, the ash content of Cornu Cervi Parvum was analyzed and the accuracy was confirmed by the developed compact NIR system.

Air quality monitoring is a primary activity for industrial and social environment. The government identifies the pollutants that each industry must monitor. Especially, the VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), which are very harmful to human body and environment atmosphere, should be controlled under the government policy. However, the VOCs, which have not been confirmed in emission sources are very difficult to monitor. It is needed to develop the monitoring system that allow the continuous and in situ measurement of VOCs mixture in different environmental matrices. Gas chromatography and mass spectrometry are the most prevalent current techniques among those available for the analysis of VOCs. But, they need a large size analytical instrument, which costs a great deal for purchase and operation. In addition, it has some limitations for realtime environmental monitoring such as location problems and slow processing time. Recently, several companies have commercialized a portable VOCs measurement systems, which cannot classify various kinds of VOCs but total quantities. We have developed a VOCs measurement system, which recognizes various kinds and quantities of VOCs, such as benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX). Also, it can be used as a stand- alone type and/or fixed type in the vehicle with rack for real -time environmental monitoring.
