Recently porous polymer has widely been applied to packaging, heat isolation, and sound absorption in various fields from the electrics to the automobiles industry. A lot of micro porosities inside foamed polymer provide lower heat conduction and lighter weight than non-porous polymer, because they involve gas or air during foaming process. In this paper experimental approaches of the UV laser micro machining behavior for Expanded Polypropylene (EPP) foamed polymer materials, which have different expansion rates, were investigated. From these results, the ablation phenomena were finally observed that the ablation is depended upon stronger photo-chemical than photo-thermal effect. This study will also help us to understand interaction between UV laser beam and porous polymer.
To improve the methanol electro-oxidation in direct methanol fuel cells(DMFCs), Pt electrocatalysts embedded on porous carbon nanofibers(CNFs) were synthesized by electrospinning followed by a reduction method. To fabricate the porous CNFs, we prepared three types of porous CNFs using three different amount of a styrene-co-acrylonitrile(SAN) polymer: 0.2 wt%, 0.5 wt%, and 1 wt%, respectively. A SAN polymer, which provides vacant spaces in porous CNFs, was decomposed and burn out during the carbonization. The structure and morphology of the samples were examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy and their surface area were measured using the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET). The crystallinities and chemical compositions of the samples were examined using X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical properties on the methanol electro-oxidation were characterized using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. Pt electrocatalysts embedded on porous CNFs containing 0.5 wt% SAN polymer exhibited the improved methanol oxidation and electrocatalytic stability compared to Pt/conventional CNFs and commercial Pt/C(40 wt% Pt on Vulcan carbon, E-TEK).
Many researchers have discussed how membrane performance can be enhanced through an understanding of polymer science and engineering. The understandings of transport in porous membrane are used to achieve the isolation of certain components from mixtures. Particular emphasis is placed on the applicability of membrane separations for the isolation of macromolecules[1]. An awareness of membrane structure characteristics is required for the rational design of membranes for specific and/or new applications. This understanding rests on the knowledge of fields such as polymer thermodynamics[2], polymer adsorption [3, 4], diffusion in polymers[5, 6], reaction mechanism[7], and the dynamic behavior[8, 9] of polymer in porous membrane.
To increase freeze-thaw resistance of porous concrete, this study examined physical properties of polymer by replacing paste used as a binding material with polymer, using unsaturated polyester and epoxy resin, and changing the mixing ratio of polymer. According to the result of this study, when the mixing ratio of resin paste to aggregates was 11 to 16%, voids volume was 33 to 37% and unit weight was about 1620 to 1720kg/$m^3$. In comparison with previous studies using cement paste, voids volume increased by about 7 to 16%, while unit weight decreased by about 100 to 300kg/$m^3$. Compressive strength was 90 to 155kg/$cm^2$ at the age of 7 days, which was 5-40kg/$cm^2$ bigger than porous concrete using cement paste. From a viewpoint of freeze-thaw resistance, it was identified that pluse velocity fell by 0.23km/sec, about 7% of the original velocity, when the cycle of freeze-thaw was repeated 300 times. In spite of 300 repetitions of the cycle, relative dynamic modulus of elasticity was more than 60%, which suggested that its freeze-thaw resistance was more excellent compared with the result that relative dynamic modulus of elasticity of porous concrete using cement paste was 60 % or less under the condition of 80 repetitions of freeze-thaw cycle.
Poly(g-glutamic acid) (g-PGA) is a very promising biodegradable polymer that is produced by microorganism of Bacillus subtilis. Because g-PGA is water-soluble, anionic, biodegradable, and even edible, its potential applications have been studied from an industrial standpoint. In this study, we fabricated porous g-PGA foams by means of a freeze-solvent extraction method for tissue-engineering applications. Porous g-PGA foams were chemically cross-linked using a hexamethylene diisocyanate solution. An aqueous basic solution was used to neutralize g-PGA foam for cell culturing. During an in vitro cell culture study, it was observed that primary rabbit ear chondrocytes were well at tached and spread over the surface oft hree-dimensional cross-linkedg-PGA foam. From these results, it is concluded that cross-linkedg-PGA foam is aprom is in gmaterial for tissue-engineering applications, especially those pertaining to the regeneration of human cartilage.

Ternary blends of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA), poly(${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone) (PCL) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) were produced with different concentrations of components via melt blending. By leaching the PEO from the samples by water, porous materials were obtained with potential application for bio scaffolds. Sample porosity was evaluated by calculating the ratio of porous scaffold density (${\rho}^*$) to the non-porous material density (${\rho}_s$). Highest porosity (51.42%) was related to the samples containing 50 wt%. of PEO. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies showed the best porosity resulted by decreasing PLLA/PCL ratio at constant concentration of PEO. Crystallization behavior of the ternary blend samples was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Results revealed that the crystallinity of PLLA was improved by addition of PEO and PCL to the samples. The porosity plays a key role in governing the compression properties. Mechanical properties are presented by Gibson-Ashby model.
The bimodal porous carbons were synthesized by using imprinting method with templates of SBA-15 particle and silica sphere and applied as supporting materials for the electro-catalyst of polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC). The silica spheres with diameter size of 100 nm and SBA-15 particle having 200 nm -250 nm diameter and 700 nm -900 nm length were synthesized in this work. The bimodal porous carbons (S100) were prepared by using the silica spheres and SBA-15 as templates and mesophase pitch as a carbon source. The PtRu nanoparticle of ca. 1.9 nm were supported on the bimodal porous carbon support and the resulting PtRu/S100 catalysts was tested by the cyclic voltammetry. The use of bimodal porous carbon showed in comparable electro-catalytic activities with commercial catalyst. Though unclear effects of bimodal porosity of supports could be obtained in the scope of this study, morphological advantage in electrical conductivity can be considered on the electro-catalytic activity.

The ultra-drawing process of an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) gel film was examined by incorporating linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and $BaTiO_3$ nanoparticles. The effects of LLDPE and the draw ratios on the morphological development and mechanical properties of the nanocomposite membrane systems were investigated. By incorporating $BaTiO_3$ nanoparticles in the UHMWPE/LLDPE blend systems, the ultra-drawing process provided a highly extended, fibril structure of UHMWPE chains to form highly porous, composite membranes with well-dispersed nanoparticles. The ultra-drawing process of UHMWPE/LLDPE dry-gel films desirably dispersed the highly loaded $BaTiO_3$ nanoparticles in the porous membrane, which could be used to form multi-layered structures for electronic applications in various embedded, printed circuit board (PCB) systems.
