The oxygen electrode of a biosensor needs enzyme immobilized membrane and a dialysis membrane to measure the oxygen concentration that remains after an enzyme reacts with its substrate. Accodingly, a single-layer PVA laminated CTA/PCL membrane was developed as an oxygen biosensor electrode. The enzymes were immobilized on a cellulose triacetate/polycarprolactone membrane using the 1,1'-carbonyl diimidazole(CDI) method, and then laminated with polyvinyl alcohol, aldehyde and acid. The alcohol oxidase and PVA laminated CTA/PCL membrane was tested with various concentration of enzyme substrates using a Yellow Springs Instrument(YSI) oxygen sensor. Under 5-10mmol substrates produced $0.37{\sim}0.83{\mu}A$(r=0.995) currents, and ater 8 weeks the glucose oxidase activity remained at about 56%, while the other activities remained very low. A SEM indicated a smooth surface and tightly attached PVA on the enzyme-immobilized CTA/PCL membranes.

There are several methods to fabricate Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal(PDLC) films. One of them, so-called Nematic Curvilinear Aligned Phase(NCAP) film, is based on emulsion technology. To produce NCAP systems various water soluble polymers, such as partially hydrolyzed polyvinylalcohol(PVA) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone(PVP), which can form stable emulsion of liquid crystal(LC) without any stabilizers were used. In this work, we studied the dependence of emulsion stability on nature and composition of copolymers composed of water-soluble and water-insoluble moiety. We found that interfacial surface tension depends on the composition of comonomer, the copolymer concentration in the water, and the nature of hydrophobic chain. The Acrylamide -styrene(AA-ST) copolymer showed the lowest interfacial surface tension among the tested copolymers at the same concentration. Since the interfacial surface tension decreases with increasing the compatibility of copolymer with LC phase the AA-ST copolymer has the best compatibility with LC molecules. It is believed that molecules adsorbing easily on the surface of LC droplets allows the LC emulsion system to be more stable.

The formation of a complex between PVP or HPC and iodine was indicated by a red shift in the tri-iode band while PVA-iodine complex showed its characterized band around 500 nm in pure aqueous media. Addition of surfactant SDS resulted in a disapperance of the characteristic blue color of the PVA-iodine complex indicating that the complex is not formed in aqueous surfactant media. However in case of PVP or HPC, presence of the monomers of SDS favored the complex formation but in higher concentration, the micelles of SDS decreased the complex. Complexation was found to increase with increasing content of n-propanol in the system since n-propanol inhibits the formation of gels or microgels in the polymer solution. But in case of PVA-iodine complex, addition of n-propanol led to conversion of bigger polyiodides into smaller ones, which is indicative of increased intermolecular hydrogen bond interaction between propanol and PVA effecting a decrease in the PVA aggregate space.

Cracks in concrete structures are inevitable phenomena caused by shrinkage, hydration heat, and external loads. These cracks facilitate the penetration of external harmful ions into the concrete, which greatly reduces its durability. Recently, self-healing concrete has been actively studied. Also, self-healing fiber-reinforced concrete have been studied to control the crack in concrete and to maximize the shelf-healing capability. In this study, mortar specimens containing PVA fiber, fly ash and crystalline admixture were fabricated. The compressive and flexural strength were evaluated. Also, the self-healing performance was evaluated by the absorption test. From the results, it was confirmed that the amount of water absorbed by healing of the crack decreased as time increased. It was also found that PVA fiber is beneficial for the production of calcium carbonate, an additional healing product.

To reduce the environmental contamination and to utilize fly ash massively produced from the coal power plant every year, we synthesized the artificial zeolite using fly ash treated with alkaline, and then analyzed the mineralogical and morphological properties by X-ray, IR, and SEM. The amount of $NH_4{^+}$, $K^+$, and $H_2PO_4{^-}$ adsorbed by the fly ash and the artificial zeolite were determined with reaction time, amount of adsorbate used, ion concentrations. The results obtained from the pot experiments packed with the top soil, amended with granulated artificial zeolite which was made by treatment of 4% polyvinylalcohol, showed that CEC of the artificial zeolite was $257.7cmol^+kg^{-1}$, that was almost 36 times greater than that of fly ash. The ratio of $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ decreased but the amount of Na increased. The physico-chemical properties analyzed by X-ray, IT, and SEM represented that the artificial zeolite synthesized had a similar morphological structure to that of the natural zeolite. The structures of the artificial zeolite had a significantly enlarged surface having a lot of pores, while the fly ash looked like spherical smooth shape with having not pores on the surface. Thus, the artificial zeolite was successfully synthesized. The results of adsorption isotherms of fly ash and artificial zeolite showed that the amount of $NH_4{^+}$, $K^+$, and $H_2PO_4{^-}$ adsorbed increased as the equilibrium concentration increased, while $NH_4{^+}$ was strongly adsorbed on the surface of fly ash and artificial zeolite than that of $K^+$. The most distinctive growth of Chinese cabbage was found from the top soil(NPK + soils + 20% of granulated artificial zeolite + 5% of compost). Therefore, we concluded that one of the most effective methods to effectively recycle a fly ash was to make the artificial zeolite as we did in this experiment.
The geometric design of an implant surface may play an important role in affecting early osseointegration. It is well known that the porous surfaced implant had much benefits for the osseointegration and the early stability of implant. However, the porous surfaced implant had weakness from the transgingival contamitants, and it resulted in alveolar bone loss. The other problem identified with porous surface implant is the loss of physical properties resulting from the bead sintering process. In this study, we developed the new bead coating implant to overcome the disadvantages of porous surfaced implant. Ti-6Al-4V beads were supplied from STARMET (USA). The beads were prepared by a plasma rotating electrode process (PREP) and had a nearly spherical shape with a diameter of 75-150 ${\mu}m$. Two types of titanium implants were supplied by KJ Meditech (Korea). One is an external hexa system (External type) and the other is an internal system with threads (Internal type). The implants were pasted with beads using polyvinylalcohol solution as a binder, and then sintered at 1250 $^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours in vacuum of $10^{-5}$ torr. The resulting porous structure was 400-500 ${\mu}m$ thick and consisted of three to four bead layers bonded to each other and the implant. The pore size was in the range of 50-150 ${\mu}m$ and the porosity was 30-40 % in volume. The aim of this study was to evaluate the osseointegration of the newly developed dental implant. The experimental implants (n=16) were inserted in the unilateral femur of 4 mongrel dogs. All animals were killed at 8 weeks after implantation, and samples were harvested for hitological examination. All bead coated porous implants were successfully osseointegrated with peripheral bone. The average bone-implant contact ratios were 84.6 % (External type) and 81.5 % (Internal type). In the modified Goldner's trichrome staining, new generated mature bones were observed at the implant interface at 8 weeks after implantation. Although, further studies are required, we could conclude that the newly developed vacuum sintered Ti-6Al-4V bead coating implant was strong enough to resist the implant insertion force, and it was easily osseointegrated with peripheral bone.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of some soil conditioners, such as polyvinylalcohol(PVA), zeolite and perlite, on the changes of soil physical properties and on tobacco growth in paddy-upland rotated field. Soil conditioners were treated at the rates of 120kg in PVA, 500kg in zeolite and perlite per l0a, respectively. Ratio of soil aggregates formed from the treated plots tended to. be higher than those from the control in the order of PVA > perlite > zeolite. The wet aggregate stability, mean weight diameter, moisture retention and air permeability from the treated plots tended to be higher than those from the control. Amounts of water-stable aggregates of PV A-treated soil increased with higher soil moisture showing a peak at 50% of moisture content. But with respect to particle of size aggregate formed for crop growth and workability in field, it was presumed that 40% of soil moisture content would be most desirable. Visual characters of soil surface throughout the experiment clearly showed that treated soils were maintaining better surface roughness and porosity than control, but difference in water stable aggregates among treated plots tended to be narrowed. The growths of tobacco, espacially its root zone were better in conditioner treated plots than in non-treated plot showing best in PVA-treated soil.
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of some soil conditioners, such as polyacrylamide(PAM), polyvinylalcohol(PVA) and Bitumen emulsion, on aggregate formation and stability, wetting angle, sorptivity and penetrability of the soil with different textures : sand, sandy loam, loam and clay loam. A pot experiment was carried out to find out the effect of treatment on the germination and growth of lettuce with three textures : sand, sandy loam and silt loam. Soil aggregates larger than 2mm in untreated soils at dry condition were naught in sand, 45% in sandy loam, 80% in loam and 90% in clay loam. Treatments of soil conditioners tended to increase the occurrence of soil aggregate larger than 2mm, which were 20~25% in sand, 55~75% sandy loam, but not affected greatly aggragate occurence in loam and clay loam. The aggregate instability was decreased by the soil conditioner treatment. The wetting angles of the soils were greatly changed by hydrophobic of Bitumen, but those were changed slightly by PVA and PAM application. The sorptivity and penetrability data indicated that the effects of different materials on these parameters differed depending upon soil texture. Application of PVA and PAM were no effect exceptive in sand. Application of Bitumen revealed that water movement was not showed in all soils. The germination rate, root weight and top plant weight of lettuce were increased in all soils by PAM treatment as compared to untreated soils. Particularly the greater effect was occurred in sand soil than in sandy loam and silt loam. PAM increased greatly the moisture content and air phase of soils.
This study was conducted to develop a serum-free, defined medium of IVM of pig oocytes. The TCM-199 with supplemented with polyvinylalcohol(PVA), polyvinylpyrrollidone(PVP) and porcine follicular fluid(pFF) were used as basal medium. The effects of the these additives on the rates of maturity and development under in-vitro fertilization and in vitro culture were examined and subsequently considered on the possibilities be sustituted for the bovine serum albumin(BSA). Maturation rate of pig oocytes in IVM media containing PVA(82.4%), pFF(89.4%) and BSA(90.0%) were significantly higher(P<0.05) than that of PVP(78.6%). Cleavage rate after IVF of PVP(64%) was significantly lower(P<0.05) than these of PVA(73%), pFF(77%) and BSA(73%) supplements. in vitro development rates to morulae and blastocyst on PVP(54%) were also significantly lower(P<0.05) than these of the supplements of PVA(63%), pFF(69%) and BSA(65%). In comparison of maturation and fertilization rates of pig oocytes in each supplements, the maturity rates of PVA(82.4%), pFF(89.4%) and BSA(90.0%) were significantly lower(P<0.05) than that of PVP(72.4%) and while, the fertilization rates of pFF(87.1%) and BSA(89.1%) were significantly higher(P<0.05) than these of PVA(78.0%) and PVP(70.6%). It may be concluded that PVA and pFF can be substituted far BSA in medium for culturing pig oocytes; however, it may be considered that PVP were limited to for BSA in the in vitro culture of the embryos.
Although a variety of synthetic vascular grafts are available in modern vascular surgery, no ideal prosthesis ha,4 yet been developed. Small-caliber vascular grafts with low flow, as used in the lower extremity, continue to become thrombosed at unacceptable rates. We have developed and evaluated the new antithrombogenic blood contacting surfaces in canine model. Material and Method: Two now antithrombogenic blood contacting surfaces(Polyvinylalcohol -Polyurethane(PVA-PU) blend and natural Graphite-polyurethane(G-PU) blend) have been developed and evaluated in canine model, using vascular grafts and patches. The luminal surfaces of the test vascular grafts(5 mm ID) were fabricated by dipping a glass rod in PVA-PU blend solution(50 % PVA) using phase separation method. Mongrel dogs of either sex weighing 18-22 kg were anesthetized by endotracheal intubation using halothane and their lungs were ventilated with a volume-cycled ventilator, Maintenance anesthesia with 0.5-1.0% halothane and supplemental oxygen was used. Two pairs were used for comparison in the bilateral femoral arteries for both vascular grafts(PVA-PU vs. PU) and vascular patches(G-PU vs. PU). Bilateral groin incisions were made and the arteries were exposed and clamped. After an excision of 1 cm of the artery between clamps, a grail of 2.5 cm in length was implanted end-to-end using 6-0 polypropylene suture. The vascular patch was implanted as a form of on-lay patch. Animals were sacrificed at 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 16 weeks for vascular grafts and 1, 2. 4 and 6 weeks for vascular patches. Result The vascular grafts of PVA-PU blends showed patent lumina in the 2 and 16 weeks animals, while those of PU showed a patent lumen in 2 weeks animal. PVA-PU graft of 16 weeks showed a fairly clean luminal surface. A light microscopic finding of this graft demonstrated good tissue infiltration through porosity, The animals with vascular patches showed patent arteries in both groups except 2 weeks animal. Scanning electron microscopy of the luminal surfaces of G-PU patches in 4 and 6 weeks animals showed endothelial cell covering with microvilli. PU patches showed qualitatively less endothelial cell covering. Conclusion: In conclusion, PVA-PU and G-PU blends can be a promising blood contacting surfaces for application in a synthetic vascualr graft. However, further animal study is needed to determine the real long-term effects of these methods of surface modifications.
