  • An experimental and analyical investigations were undertaken to improve understanding of spring-back phenomena of chopped fiber reinforced thermoplastic composite sheet. The materials tested contained 20, 35, 40 percent by weight of readomly oriented glass fiber in a prolypropylene matrix. The simple bending tests were performed at temperatures ranging form 75 .deg. c to 150 .deg. c with 25 .deg. c increment and at punch speed of 1mm/sec and 0.01mm/sec. The spring-back angel measured in pure bending is compared with the prediction base on the analytical model. Good agreement between experimental and predicted results was observed.

  • Composite membranes were prepared for membrane/cold condensation process for recovery of unreacted olefin monomer from the polyolefin polymerization process by solution coating and plasma polymerization processes. Poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) solution was coated on polysulfone (PSF) support and increase of prepolymer content in solution made more dense membrane structure to result in the increase of separation factor while absolute flux decreased. Permeation of organic materials through the composite membranes follows the sorption and diffusion mechanism, which brought about the results that separation factor increased with critical temperature of the organic materials, and that flux increased with the increase of the molar volume. Crosslinking period affected the permeation characteristics. Other types of composite membranes were fabricated by plasma polymerization of siloxane materials on polypropylene (PP) and PSF supports. PP was tested as a support for composite membranes, which had not been used so far in solution coating process, and plasma polymerization made the composite membranes equivalent performances to those of membranes prepared by solution coating process.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate effects of types of synthetic fibers on mechanical properties of alkali-activated slag composite. Materials and mixture proportion for matrix are determined, and the compressive strength, tensile performance, and cracking patterns of three composites reinforced by polypropylene, polyvinyl-alcohol, and polyethylene fibers. From the test results, it was observed that polyvinyl-alcohol fiber-reinforced composite and polyethylene fiber-reinforced composite had similar tensile performance. On the other hand, polypropylene fiber-reinforced composite showed low tensile performance. And it was exhibited that other factors except tensile strength and aspect ratio of fiber influence significantly tensile behavior of composite.

  • The waste tire powder is modified with allylamine in the presence of ultraviolet radiation and the influence of surface modification on the thermal and rheological properties of polypropylene/waste tire powder composites was investigated. X-ray diffraction studies of PP/waste tire powder composite without compatibilizer, such as maleic anhydride-g-polypropylene (MA-PP), shows the increase in peak intensity of ${\beta}$ crystalline peaks, whereas it completely disappears in the presence of the MA-PP. Differential scanning calorimetry results further supported the above fact. The melt viscosities and storage modulus of the composites with modified waste tire powder show higher value than that of composites with unmodified powder and it is attributed to the interaction between amine group on modified powder surface and maleic anhydride of MA-PP.

  • Wood powders were surface-modified by plasma-treating propylene to make them compatible with PP matrix in WPC(wood powder composite). The plasma treatment of propylene resulted in the deposition of an ultrathin hydrophobic film which had the chemical structure similar to that of polypropylene. Wood powder and polypropylene were mixed to pellets by twin screw extruder and then 50 wt% wood powder/PP composites were produced by an injection machine. Tensile strength and flexural strength were improved by 7.59% and 12.43% at the maximum respectively. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) observation on the fracture surface revealed that the treatment improved the interfacial bonding and the mechanical properties of the composites.

  • The Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar(SHPB) has been the most widely used apparatus to characterize dynamic mechanical behavior of materials at high strain rates between $100s^{-1}$ and $10,000s^{-1}$. The SHPB test is based on the wave propagation theory which was developed to give the stress, strain and strain rate in the specimen using the strains measured in the incident and transmission bars. In this study, the SHPB was directly designed and fabricated for the dynamic mechanical properties of fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) composites. In addition, this apparatus was verified for the validity by comparing the strain data obtained through the high speed camera and Digital Image Correlation(DIC) during the high strain rate compression test of the self-reinforced polypropylene composite (SRPP) specimen.

  • Atmospheric glow plasma polymerization was applied to wood powder before fabricating polypropylene (PP) matrix composites. Seven different types of monomers (Oxygen, Benzene, CH4, Acrylic-acid, Hexafluoroethane, Trifluorotolune, Hexamethyl-disiloxane) were analyzed to determine the most suitable precursor for plasma polymerization. The surface energy was calculated from measured contact angle about each monomer on PP. Hexamethyl-disiloxane (HMDSO) had a highest surface energy and is selected as the most suitable monomer. Wood powder and polypropylene were mixed as pellets by twin screw extruder and then 50 wt% wood powder/PP composites were produced by an injection machine. Tensile strength and Flexural strength have improved by 7.59% and 12.43% at the maximum respectively. SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope) observation on the fracture surface revealed that the plasma polymerization have improved the interfacial bonding and the mechanical properties of the composites.

  • Tensile properties of polypropylene based self-reinforced composites were investigated as a function of process variables of the double-belt lamination equipment such as pressure, temperature and cooling conditions. Elastic modulus was enhanced approximately 6 times from 0.2 to 1.2 GPa. The improvement mechanism was studied by identification of crystalline structure changes using DSC and XRD analysis. In addition, morphology change of self-reinforced composites was also investigated by SEM analysis in order to reveal the degree of impregnation.

  • In order to enhance the greenness in the strain-hardening composites and to reduce the high cost of typical polyvinyl alcohol fiber reinforced engineered cementitious composite (PVA-ECC), an affordable strain-hardening composite with green binder content has been proposed. For optimizing the strain-hardening behavior of cementitious composites, this paper investigates the effects of polypropylene fibers on the first cracking strength, fracture properties, and micromechanical parameters of cementitious composites. For this purpose, digital image correlation (DIC) technique was utilized to monitor crack propagation. In addition, to have an in-depth understanding of fiber/matrix interaction, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was used. To understand the effect of fibers on the strain hardening behavior of cementitious composites, ten mixes were designed with the variables of fiber length and volume. To investigate the micromechanical parameters from fracture tests on notched beam specimens, a novel technique has been suggested. In this regard, mechanical and fracture tests were carried out, and the results have been discussed utilizing both fracture and micromechanical concepts. This study shows that the fiber length and volume have optimal values; therefore, using fibers without considering the optimal values has negative effects on the strain-hardening behavior of cementitious composites.

  • Flow mark is a sort of surface defect on the composite that can arise during the filling stage of the injection molding process. The purpose of this study is to clarify a mechanism of the flow mark which appears on the surface of injection molded Polypropylene (PP) through the characterization of the surface structure. The materials used in this report are PP/rubber and PP/talc compounding, which are widely used in automobile part. The flow mark shows two different constitutions, such as a luster part and a cloud part on the surface of the injection molded PP. We have investigated the surface structure of PP/rubber and PP/talc composites by using scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) and optical microscopy (OM). As a result, the cloud part contains higher contents of the rubber and talc compare to the luster part.
