  • High impact polystyrene (HIPS)/organoclay nanocomposites via in situ polymerization were synthesized and their rheological properties were investigated. For the study, two types of organoclays were used: a commercially available organoclay, Cloisite 10A (C10A), and a laboratory-prepared organoclay having a reactant group, vinylclay (ODVC). The X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy experiments revealed that the HIPS/ODVC nanocomposite achieved an exfoliated structure, whereas the HIPS/C10A nanocomposite achieved an intercalated structure. In the small-amplitude oscillatory shear experiments, both storage modulus and complex viscosity increased with increasing organoclay. A pronounced effect of the organoclay content was observed, resulting in larger storage modulus and stronger yield behavior in the low frequency region when compared to neat HIPS. The crossover frequencies associated with the inverse of a longest relaxation time decreased as the organoclay content increased. Over a certain value of ODVC content, a change of pattern in rheological properties could be found, indicating a solid-like response with storage modulus greater than loss modulus at all frequencies.

  • Tencel fabrics were treated with cellulase after mechanical prefibrillation treatment. SEM analysis was carried out to study morphological change of the treated fabric. The cellulase-treated Tencel fabrics were evaluated for weight loss and tensile strength. X-ray diffraction method, moisture regain, and K/S value were used to elucidate crystalline structural changes occurred by cellulase treatment. Degree of polymerization and copper number of the cellulase-treated fabrics were also measured to estimate effect of hydrolysis. SEM analysis indicated that with treatment of prefibrillation and cellulase, fibrils were produced and damage occurred deep into the fiber. Increases in concentration and time of cellulase treatment increased weight loss and decreased tensile strength retention of the treated fabrics. As cellulase hydrolysis progressed, degree of crystallinity, moisture regain and K/S value were not much changed. (Korean J Human Ecology 2(1) : 142∼148, 1999)

  • We have studied a fabrication of vapor phase polymerized Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanowire arrays for the first time. The vapor-phase polymerization (VPP) technique is a bottom-up processing method that utilizes the organic arrangement of macromolecules to easily produce ordered aggregates, including on the nanoscale, or prepare thin films of self-assembled molecules, micropatterns, or modified microstructures of pure conducting polymers. Also, liquid-bridge-mediated nanotransfer molding (LB-nTM), which was reported as a new direct patterning method recently, is for the arrayed formation of two- or three-dimensional structures with feature sizes as small as tens of nanometers over large areas up to 4 inches across and is based on the direct transfer of various materials from a mould to a substrate through a liquid bridge between them. The PEDOT nanowires grown by VPP method and transferred on a substrate to use LB-nTM method have been fabricated to single crystal PEDOT nanowires investigated Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and electrical properties.

  • This theiss deals with the effects of addition of silicone oil to the polymerization and oxidation of frying oil in the practical deep fat frying process. The measurement of frying oil stability was carried out under various silicone oil content and compared with controlled frying process. In controlled frying process A.V., C.O.V., TBA, and contents of petroleumether insoluble fatty acids were increased as time was increased. It means thermal oxidized polymerization and hydrolysis of frying oil was occurred. When silicone oil was added to frying oil, it's thermal stability was better than that of the controlled oil and the degree of thermal stability was changed according to the contents of silicone oil. We obtained the highest degree of thermal stability when silicone oil was added 1ppm.

  • A synthesis of azide-terminated glycidyl azide polymer, GAP-A, was carried out by tosylation and azidation of polyepichlorohydrin(PECH) prepared by cationic ring-opening polymerization. Polyepichlorohydrin was prepared by cationic activated monomer polymerization using ethylene glycol and $BF_3{\cdot}OEt_2$ as an initiator and a catalyst at $\~10^{\circ}C$. Tosylation of polyepichlorohydrin was performed using traditional TsCl/pyridine method and was also carried out using TsCl/amine catalysts to reduce the reaction time significantly. Azidation of tosyl-terminated PECH(OTs-PECH) was performed using $NaN_3$ as an azidation reagent in DMF solvent at high temperature and was unexpectedly completed within 2 hours.

  • In this study, we intended to investigate aging effect of polyimide prepared by VDPD(vapor deposition polymerized method). The prepared polymide was treated by the oxygen and argon gas plasma. And we evaluated the polyimide treated by plasma from contact angle, surface leakage current, FT-IR and SEM. We know that the structure of polyimide at surface are changed to amide structure by plasma treating. It seems that strong energy of plasma causes breaking the molecular chin of the polyimide. And surface roughness increases with plasma treating time increased and sequentially the wettability and leakage current increases.

  • The clinical performance of light polymerized composite resins is greatly influenced by the quality of the light curing unit used. Commonly used halogen light curing units(LCUs) have some specific drawbacks such as decreasing light output with time. To overcome this, the blue LED LCUs are newly developed and introduced. The purpose of this study was to observe the reaction kinetics and the degree of polymerization of composite resins when cured by different light sources and to evaluate the effectiveness of the blue LED LCUs compared with conventional halogen LCUs.(omitted)

  • A novel polyacrylamide grafted hydrous ferric oxide adsorbent composite has been synthesized by using glow discharge electrolysis plasma. To optimize the synthesis conditions, the following parameters were examined in detail: applied power, discharge time, post polymerization temperature, post polymerization time, amount of crosslinking agent and hydrous ferric oxide gel added and so on. The adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The removal percentage of the adsorbent in Pb(II) solution was examined and the data obtained showed that the adsorbent composite has a high capacity for lead ion. For the use in wastewater treatment, the thermodynamic and kinetic of Pb(II)-capture were also studied. Results indicated that the adsorption reaction was a spontaneous and an endothermic process, and it seems to be obeyed a pseudo-secondorder rate model. Moreover, the adsorption isotherm of Pb(II)-capture is following the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models.

  • The radiation-induced graft polymerization of methacrlic acid and methyl methacrylate onto a polyester fabric was investigated with ${\gamma}$-ray as the radiation source, and the rate of grafting was examined. When acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, and methyl methacrylate were grafted onto a polyester fabric, grafting efficiency was depened upon the dielectric constant of the solvent in the monomer mixture. The yield of the graft polymerization was related to the total dose, the concentration of the monomer, and the concentration of the swelling agent. The melting point and the glass transition temperature of MA and MMA grafted copolymers were analysed by means of DTA. Physical properties, such as the moisture regain, the antistatic property, and the wicking time were measured.

  • Using the different adsorption properties of ssDNA and dsDNA to GO, this study used a real time and efficient fluorescence assay to detect the enzymatic activity of the Klenow fragment with the adsorbed DNA to GO. Results showed that adsorption of fluorescein-tagged ssDNA to GO resulted in fluorescence quenching and DNA was released from GO by adding complementary DNA. In addition, fluorescence restoration was increased through a polymerization reaction by the Klenow fragment in the presence of a fluorescein-attached template, GO, and primer. Gel electrophoresis was conducted to confirm the hybridization and DNA polymerization reactions on GO.
