  • To use the filter materials for reduction of carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke, the bead type cation and anion exchangers were synthesized by the suspension polymerization of GMA and DVB followed by the subsequent functionalization with sodium sulfite and diethylamine, respectively. FT-IR/ATR was used to characterize functionalized copolymer formation by sulfonation and amination, and the morphology change of ion exchangers according to the adsorption of cigarette mainstream smoke were observed by SEM. Ion exchange capacity, functionalization yield and adsorption properties of carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke were investigated. The highest functionalization yields and ion exchange capacity were obtained at 5 wt% DVB content in co-monomer. The adsorption amount of carbonyl compounds in cigarette mainstream smoke of anion exchanger was higher than that of cation exchanger because of its electron delocalization in carbonyl group. The adsorption efficiency was increased in the presence of moisture. This results indicated that the anion exchanger was applicable for cigarette filter material because of its large ion exchange capacity and rapid ion exchange reaction.

  • Poly(amino acid) derivatives have been widely investigated as a drug carrier in drug delivery system. Particularly, polysuccinimide (PSI) is one of the most promising drug carriers since it possesses suitable physicochemical characteristics for development of macromolecular prodrugs, due to biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this study, we deal with the synthesis of polyaspartamide having various functional groups such as methoxy-poly(ethylene glycol) (MPEG) via ring closing of PSI. PSI was synthesized by polyonensation polymerization of spartic acid. The variety of average molecular weight was confirmed with reacion time and catalyst content to observe the optimum condition of synthesis. MPEG, hydrophilic chain, was bonded to fabricate polymeric micell composed of hydrophilic and hydrophobic polymer. All materials were characterized by 1H-NMR, FT-IR and GPC. In addition, the formation of nanoparticle micelle as drug carrier were also examined. Micelle size was measured by ELS and AFM. The functionalized polysparamide formed nanoparticle micelle whose size ranged from 90 to 130 nm. In conclusion, we prepared polyaspartamide functionalized with PEG examined the possibility as drug carriers.

  • Facilitated transport is one of the possible solutions to simultaneously improve permeability and selectivity, which is challenging in conventional polymer-based membranes. Olefin/paraffin separation using facilitated transport membrane has received much attention as an alternative solution to the conventional distillation process. Herein, we report olefin separation composite membranes based on the polymer blends containing $AgBF_4/Al(NO_3)_3$ mixed salts. Free radical polymerization process was used to synthesize an amphiphilic graft copolymer of poly(dimethyl siloxane)-graft- poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PDMS-g-POEM). In addition, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) was introduced to the PDMS-g-POEM graft copolymer to form polymer blends with various ratios. The propylene/propane mixed-gas selectivity and permeance reached up to 5.6 and 10.05 GPU, respectively, when the PEO loading was 70 wt% in polymer blend. The improvement of olefin separation performance was attributed to the olefin facilitating silver ions as well as the highly permeable blend matrix. The stabilization of silver ions in the composite membrane was achieved through the introduction of $Al(NO_3)_3$ which suppressed the reduction of silver ions to silver particles.

  • Purpose: A soft contact lens was manufactured by adding naringin known as natural anti-bacterial material to resin solution. With solution eluted from manufactured contact lens, we examined its optical properties, physical and chemical states of naringin in the polymer, and elution properties. Methods: The soft contact lens with naringin was synthesized by bulk polymerization method. IR spectrum and HPLC were used to define the bonding type of naringin itself in the soft contact lens contained naringin, elution process of naringin to the saline solution, and the amount of naringin solution eluted from the lens with elapsed time. Results: Naringin was continuously eluted with constant concentration from the soft contact lens for about a month and the structure ofnaringin which is eluted was as same as before it was added to resin solution. Any change in optical properties such as transmittance couldn't be found. Bonding state and the structure of naringin in contact lens were explained with IR spectrum and HPLC results. Conclusions: In the contact lens with naringin, naringin remained in the contact lens bonding with weak hydrogen bonding and/or van der Waals force between naringin and polymer. Naringin was continuously eluted from the contact lens contained naringin during about 1 month. Even after 1 month, it showed that the concentration of the naringin eluted was approximately 10 ppm in a day. From the results, adding naringin to the soft contact lens resin is very effective method for manufacturing the soft contact lens which has anti-bacterial function for a period of time.

  • The macroreticular (MR) type glycidylmethacrylate (GMA)-divinylbenzene (DVB) copolymer (polyglycidylmethacrylate) beads (RG) were prepared by a suspension polymerization using 0~100 vol % of 2,2,4-trimethylpentane (TMP) as a diluent. Macroreticular type cation exchange resins containing phosphoric acid groups (RGP) were prepared by the reaction of GMA-DVB copolymer and poly (glycidyl methacrylate) bead (RG) with phosphoric acid in the presence of benzene. In this study, the effect of degree of crosslinking and the amount of the diluent on physical properties and adsorbability of uranium of RGP resins were investigated respectively. The chemical and physical properties of RGP resins were affected by both of the amount of the diluent and the degree of crosslinking. The effect of degree of crosslinking on the adsorbed amount of uranium for RGP resins were decreased in the order of $$RGP-10(50){\sim_=}RGP-1(50)>RGP-2(50)>RGP-5(50)>RGP-0$$. The effect of the diluent amount were as follows RGP-2(100)>RGP-2(75)>RGP-2(50)>RGP-2(30)>RGP-2(0). The crosslinking degree effect on uranium adsorbability depended on pore structure, cation exchange capability and swelling ratio. On the other hand, the effect of the diluent amount were relied on surface area and pore structure raher than cation exchange capability.

  • Makgeolli, known as takju, is a traditional alcoholic beverage which is native in Korea. It is made from various rice and other cereals. This study is carried out to compare the physicochemical characteristics and functional quality of makgeolli from various rice cultivars according to different amylose contents and amylopectin compositions. The 'Goami2', 'Goami3', and 'Goami4' have high amylose contents and lower proportional degrees of polymerization (DP) 6~12 and higher proportions of DP 13~24 in amylopectin of milled rice. Various variations are shown in pasting properties (viscosities) and gelatinization characteristics, and it is supposed to be related to both the amylose contents and the amylopectin compositions of raw rice. The makgeolli is being manufactured by using the 2-step-brewing method. The makgeolli is analyzed for alcohol contents, pH levels, total acids, Hunter color values and organic acid compositions. The makgeolli of 'Goami2', 'Goami3', and 'Goami4' have showed higher makgeolli yields, lower ethanol contents and less sweetness than other cultivars, and they also have high non-digestible carbohydrates contents which are derived from their high non-digestible carbohydrates contents in milled rice. Therefore, we are able to suggest that it is necessary to improve the makgeolli fermentation processes of 'Goami2', 'Goami3', and 'Goami4'.

  • Sensory properties of cooked rice were affected by the varieties and growing environments of the rice. Moistness, cohesiveness, and adhesiveness of cooked rice were highly and positively correlated each other, whereas firmness was negatively correlated with these attributes. Sixty rice samples which differed in varieties and/or growing environments were divided into four groups based on their textural properties through principal component analysis and cluster analysis. Quality type I showed the highest values for moistness, cohesiveness, and adhesiveness, and the lowest values for firmness of cooked rice. On the other hand, quality type IV showed just the opposite values. There was no significant difference among rice starches in amylose content (P<0.05). A17 (type III) and A09 (type IV) had higher blue values for starch and amylopectin than the other samples (type I and II). On the amylogram, these samples showed lower values for breakdown and higher values for setback than the other samples. Average degree of polymerization, average chain length, and average number of chains for amylose and amylopectin were 597-878 and 2660-3140, 140-230 and 17-19, and 3.1-4.9 and 140-170, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the tensile bond strength between composite resin and the human enamel. Three composite resin systems, two chemical (Clearfil Posterior, and Clearfil Posterior-3) and one light cure (Photo Clearfil-A), used with and without an intermediate resin (clearfil bonding agent), were evaluated under different amounts of load (10g, 200g and 200g for a moment) for in vitro tensile bond strength to acid-eched human enamel. Clinically intact buccal or lingual surfaces of 144 freshly extracted human permanent molars, embedded in acrylic were flattened with No #600 carborundum discs. Samples were randomly assigned to the different materials and treatments using a table of random numbers. Eight samples were thus prepared for each group(Table 2) these surfaces were etched with an acid etchant (Kurarey Co. Japan) in a mode of etching for 30 seconds, washing for 15 seconds, and drying for 30-seconds. During the polymerization of composite resin on the acid-etched enamel surfaces with and without bonding agent 10-gram, 200 gram and temporary 200 gram of load were applied. The specimens were stored in 50% relation humidity at $37^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours before testing. An universal Testing machine (Intesco model No. 2010, Tokyo, Japan) was used to apply tensile loads in the vertical directed (fig 5), and the force required for separation was recorded with a cross head speed of 0.25 mm/min and 20 kg in full scale. The results were as follow: 1. The tensile bond strength was much greater in applying a bonding agent than in not doing that. 2. The tensile bond strength of chemical cure composite resin was higher than that of light cure composite resin with applying on bonding agent on the acid-etched enamel. 3. In case of not applying a bonding agents on the acid-etching enamel, the highest tensile bond strength under 200 gram of load was measured in light cure composite resin. 4. The tensile bond strength under 200-gram of load has no relation with applying the bonding agent. 5. Under the load of 10-gram, There was significant difference in tensile bond strength as applying the bonding agent.

  • The purpose of this study was to estimate the changes of tensile bond strength according to the difference in lining materials and lining area. Seventy non-carious extracted human molars were used in the present study, and they were randomly assigned into 2 experimental groups according to the difference in lining materials. Each experimental group was subdivided into 3 groups according to the difference in lining area. Circular cavities were prepared on the dentin surface to a diameter of 1.5mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm and the prepared cavities were filled with Fuji II LC( Glass Ionomer Cement : GIC) or Dycal. Dentin specimens without circular cavity were used as control group. The primer and bonding agent of All-Bond 2 and composite resin (Z-100, 3M Dental Products, U. S. A.) were applied to the exposed dentin surface with or without lining. Tensile bond strengths for the experimental specimens were then measured. To examine the interface between dentin and liner & between liner and composite resin, two specimens from each group were fabricated and observed under the SEM. The results were as follows. 1. Tensile bond strength for the specimens lined with GIC was higher than that for specimens lined with Dycal. However, there was no significant difference between two groups(p>0.05). 2. Tensile bond strength for the specimens lined with GIC in a diameter of 1.5mm(GIC-1.5mm lining group) was statistically higher than that for the GIC-2.0mm lining group and GIC-2.5mm lining group(p<0.05). 3. Tensile bond strength for the specimens lined with Dycal in a diameter of 2.5mm (Dycal-2.5mm lining group)was statistically lower than that for Dycal-1.5mm lining group and Dycal-2.0mm lining group(p<0.05). 4. It was possible to observe the good adhesion of the resin composite to the GIC and the presence of a fissure between GIC and dentin all along the interface. Interfacial gaps of 7.2-$72.2{\mu}m$ between GIC and dentin were observed. The interfacial gap between GIC and dentin at the cavity base was greater. However, the gap was gradually decreased toward the occlusal portion. 5. It was possible to observe the poor adhesion of the resin composite to the Dycal. The detachment of Dycal was occurred all along the composite resin-Dycal interface, and the gaps of 2.0-$30.1{\mu}m$ were formed. In all the specimens, polymerization shrinkage of resin composite caused the detachment of Dycal from the body of Dycal. At a Dycal-dentin interface. it was possible to observe the good adhesion. but poor adhesion with interfacial gap of 2.9-$26.8{\mu}m$ was observed partially.

  • To get a satisfactory result in the composite resin restorations, it is necessary to choose correct shade. At present, most of the commercial composite resins are based on the Vita Lumin shade guide or Bioform shade guide, but color differences might be expected even using the same shade in various materials. In this study, five kinds of light-cured composite resins with A2 and B3 shade were used to measure and compare the color each other while one porcelain served as a control. All composite resins (Spectrum TPH (SP), VeridonFil- Photo (VE), Z100 (Z100), Charisma (CH), Prodigy (PRO)) were filled in to the metal mold (12 mm diameter, 2 mm depth), followed by compression, polymerization and polishing with wet sandpaper. The specimens of porcelain were fabricated by using the refractory mold for porcelain. After 24 hours, the specimens were placed on the spectrocolorimeter and spectral reflectance were measured under CIE illuminant D65. After measuring the values of $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ and ${\Delta}E^*$, following results were obtained; 1. The $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values of both shade of porcelain specimens showed significantly higher than those of resin specimens(p<0.05). 2. In comparing the resin specimens of the A2 shade, differences were significant except $L^*$ values of SP-CH and PRO-VE, $a^*$ values of the VE-SP and $b^*$ values of the VE-Z100 and SP-PRO(p<0.05), 3. In comparing the resin specimens of the B3 shade, differences were significant except $L^*$ values of PRO-SP, $a^*$ values of the SP-PRO and Z100-VE and b* values of the PRO-SP(p<0.05). 4. In comparing the resin specimens of the A2 shade, color differences between materials (${\Delta}E^*$) showed the lowest value of 1.66, and the highest was 5.16. ${\Delta}E^*$ values of the materials of VE-PRO, CH-PRO, SP-PRO, SP-Z100 and SP-CH were lower than 3.3. 5. In comparing the resin specimens of the B3 shade, the lowest value of the ${\Delta}E^*$ was 0.57 and the highest was 5.92. ${\Delta}E^*$ values of Z100-CH and SP-PRO were lower than 3.3. The present study revealed there was perceptible color difference between materials even if they have the same designated shade based on Vita shade guide. The results of the present study suggested that it would be necessary to establish the reproducible and constant color specification system for an esthetic restoration.
