A pilot-scale sulfur particle autotrophic denitrification (SPAD) process for the treatment of municipal wastewater was operated for 10 months at Shihwa, Korea, and higher than $90\%\;NO^{-}_{3}-N$ removal efficiency was observed. Plate counting showed that the lower part of the denitrifying column reactor had the most autotrophic denitrifiers. The biofilm thickness formed on sulfur particles from the SPAD reactor was approximately $25-30\;{\mu}m$, measured by DAPI (4,6-diamidino-2-phenylindole) staining. The presence of bacteria inside the highly porous sulfur particle was also monitored by SEM observation of the internal surfaces of broken sulfur particles. Biofilm extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) analysis showed that the ratio of carbohydrate to protein decreased with the reactor heights at which biofilm-formed sulfur particles were obtained.

The iron oxide ($Fe_3O_4$) particles in the coolant of the secondary system of a nuclear power plant reduce the heat transfer performance or induce corrosion on the surface of the heat transfer tube. To prevent these problems, we conducted a study to improve the dispersion stability of iron oxide using polymeric dispersant injection in simulated secondary system water. The three kinds of anionic polymers containing carboxyl groups were selected. The dispersion characteristics of the iron oxide particles with the polymeric dispersants were evaluated by performing a settling test and measuring the transmission, the zeta potential, and the hydrodynamic particle size of the colloid solutions. Polymeric dispersants had a significant impact on the iron oxide dispersion stability in an aqueous solution. While the dispersant injection tended to improve the dispersion stability, the dispersion stability of iron oxide did not increase linearly with an increase in the dispersant concentration. This non-linearity is due to the agglomerations between the iron oxide particles above a critical dispersant concentration. The effect of the dispersant on the dispersion stability improvement was significant when the dispersant concentration ratio (ppm, dispersant/magnetite) was in the range of 0.1 to 0.01. This suggests that the optimization of dispersant concentration is required to maximize the iron oxide removal effect with the dispersant injection considering the applied environments, the iron oxide concentration and the concentration ratio of dispersant to iron oxide.

Polymeric hydrogel particles were fabricated to demonstrate the scale-up possibilities with the Particle Replication In Non-wetting Templates (PRINT) process. A permanently etched, specifically designed master was made on a silicon wafer using conventional photolithography, then reactive ion etching. The master and substrate were used repeatedly to make a large number of identical elastomeric perfluoropolyethers (PFPE) replica molds. The PFPE replica molds were used to fabricate and harvest individual, monodisperse micron-sized particles using the PRINT process. A water-soluble polymer adhesive was used as a sacrificial layer for harvesting particles. Particles were composed of biodegradable poly (ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEG-diA), and aminoethylacrylate (AEM) and 2-acryloxyethyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (AETMAC) were added to them for improving the uptake of the cells. This study suggested PRINT used to produce the uniformed and shape specific biodegradable polymer is the effective technique for the non viral vector for the drug and the gene delivery.

Using computational modeling, we design a pair of biomimetic microcapsules that exploit chemical mechanisms to communicate and alter their local environment. As a result, these synthetic objects can undergo autonomous, directed motion. In the simulations, signaling microcapsules release "agonist" particles, while target microcapsules release "antagonist" particles and the permeabilities of both capsule types depend on the local particle concentration in the surrounding solution. Additionally, the released nanoscopic particles can bind to the underlying substrate and thereby create adhesion gradients that propel the microcapsules to move. Hydrodynamic interactions and the feedback mechanism provided by the dissolved particles are both necessary to achieve the cooperative behavior exhibited by these microcapsules. Our model provides a platform for integrating both the spatial and temporal behavior of assemblies of "artificial cells", and allows us to design a rich variety of structures capable of exhibiting complex dynamics. Due to the cell-like attributes of polymeric microcapsules and polymersomes, material systems are available for realizing our predictions.

Amphiphilic polyurethane(APU) particle is a polymeric surfactant, and could increase the solubility of 2-methylnaphthalene significantly. 2-Methylnaphthalene was recovered by the precipitation of APU particles and was degraded by Acinetobacter sp. K2-2. APU particle was recovered and reused after treatment of triethylamine.
Although flotation techniques are often used for the removal of algal particles, the practicality of algae-harvesting technologies is limited owing to the complex and expensive facilities and equipment required for chemical coagulation. Here, we examined the feasibility of an approach to separating algal particles from water bodies without the need for chemical coagulants, depending on the condition of the algae, and to determine the optimal conditions. Using Anabaena sp., a cyanobacterium causes algal blooms in lakes, we stimulated auto-flocculation in algal particles without coagulants and conducted solid-liquid separation experiments of algal particles under various conditions. The six cultivation columns included in our analysis comprised four factors: Water temperature, light intensity, nutrients, and carbon source; auto-flocculation was induced under all treatments, with the exception of the treatment involving no limits to all factors, and algal particles were well-settled under all conditions for which auto-flocculation occurred. Meanwhile, flotation removal of auto-flocculated algal particles was attained only when nutrients were blocked after algae were grown in an optimal medium. However, no significant differences were detected between the functional groups of the extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) of floated and settled algal particles in the FT-IR peak, which can cause attachment by collision with micro-bubbles.

Nano-sized ZnO particles were successfully synthesized at low temperatures by a polymerized complex method via an organochemical route. The polymeric precursors could be prepared using Zn nitrate hexahydrate and a mixed solution of citric acid and ethylene glycol as a chelating agent and a reaction medium. The polymeric precursors were calcined at temperatures from 300 to $700^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, and evaluated for degree of crystallization process, thermal decomposition, surface morphology and crystallite size. The thermal decomposition and crystallization process were analyzed by TG-DTA, FI-IR and XRD. The morphology and crystallite size of the calcined particles were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmittance electron microscopy (TEM) and Scherrer's equation. Crystallization of the ZnO particles was detected at $300^{\circ}C$ and entirely completed above $400^{\circ}C$. Particles calcined between 400 and $700^{\circ}C$ showed a uniform size distribution with a round shape. The average particle sizes calcined at $400^{\circ}C$ for 3 hour were 30~40nm showing an ordinary tendency to increase with the temperatures.
To synthesize $Gd_{2}O_{3}:Eu$ phosphor powder of nano size and high luminescence efficiency under UV (ultraviolet) and VUV (vacuum ultraviolet) light, organic additives such as citric acid and ethylene glycol and $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ flux were introduced in large-scale spray pyrolysis and critical conditions for forming nano-sized particles were investigated. The $Gd_{2}O_{3}:Eu$ phosphor particles prepared from solutions with organic additives such as citric acid and ethylene glycol had micron size and spherical shape. However, the particles prepared from polymeric precursor solution with $Na_{2}CO_{3}$ flux had nano size and non-aggregation characteristics. The as-prepared spherical particles with micron size turned into nano-sized particles during post-treatment by recrystallization process. The nano-sized $Gd_{2}O_{3}:Eu$ phosphor particles showed higher brightness than the commercial $Y_2O_3:Eu$ phosphor product under both UV light of 254nm and VUV light of 147 nm.

Decay processes of accumulated charge in e-beam irradiated polymers during elevating temperature are observed using pulsed electro-acoustic measurement system. Since the polymeric materials have many superior properties such as light-weight, good mechanical strength, high flexibility and low cost, they are inevitable materials for spacecrafts. In space environment, however, the polymers sometimes have serious damage by irradiation of high energy charged particles. When the polymers of the spacecraft are irradiated by high energy charged particles, some of injected charges accumulate and remain for long time in the bulk of the polymers. Since the bulk charges sometimes cause the degradation or breakdown of the materials, the investigation of the charging and the decay processes in polymeric materials under change of temperature is important to decide an adequate material for the spacecrafts. By measuring the charge behavior in e-beam irradiated polymer, such as polyimide or polystyrene, it is found that the various accumulation and decay patterns are observed in each material. The results seem to be useful and be helpful to progress in the reliability of the polymers for the spacecraft.
We present a short review for authors' previous work on direct numerical simulations for inertialess hard particle suspensions formulated either with a Newtonian fluid or with viscoelastic polymeric fluids to understand the microstructural evolution and the bulk material behavior. We employ two well-defined bi-periodic domain concepts such that a single cell problem with a small number of particles may represent a large number of repeated structures: one is the sliding bi-periodic frame for simple shear flow and the other is the extensional bi-periodic frame for planar elongational flow. For implicit treatment of hydrodynamic interaction between particle and fluid, we use the finite-element/fictitious-domain method similar to the distributed Lagrangian multiplier (DLM) method together with the rigid ring description. The bi-periodic boundary conditions can be effectively incorportated as constraint equations and implemented by Lagrangian multipliers. The bulk stress can be evaluated by simple boundary integrals of stresslets on the particle boundary in such formulations. Some 2-D example results are presented to show effects of the solid fraction and the particle configuration on the shear and elongational viscosity along with the micro-structural evolution for both particles and fluid. Effects of the fluid elasticity has been also presented.
