The effects of poly($({\varepsilon}$-caprolactone) (PCL) on poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) and polycarbonate (PC) blends were studied. Blends of ABS/PC (70/30, wt%) with PCL as a compatibilizer were prepared by a twin screw extruder. From the glass transition temperature $(T_g)$ results of the ABS/PC blends with PCL, the $T_g$(PC) of the ABS/PC (70/30) blends decreased with increasing PCL content. From the results of the morphology of the ABS/PC (70/30) blends with PCL, the phase separation between the ABS and PC phases became less significant after adding PCL in the ABS/PC blends. In addition, the morphological studies of the ABS/PC blends etched by NaOH indicated that the shape of the droplet was changed from regular round to irregular round by adding PCL in the ABS/PC blends. These results for the mechanical properties of the ABS/PC blends with PCL indicated that the tensile, flexural and impact strengths of the ABS/PC (70/30) blends peaked at a PCL content of 0.5 phr. From the results for the rheological properties of the ABS/PC (70/30) blends with PCL content, the storage modulus, loss modulus and complex viscosity increased at PCL content up to 5 phr. From the above results of the $T_g$, mechanical properties, morphology and complex viscosity of the ABS/PC blends with PCL, it was concluded that the compatibility was increased with PCL addition in the ABS/PC (70/30, wt%) blends and that the optimum concentration of PCL as a compatibilizer is 0.5 phr.
In this study, various unsaturated polyester (UPE) resins were prepared from the condensation polymerization of mixtures of saturated (isophthalic acid : IPA) and unsaturated (maleic anhydride : MA) dibasic acids with propylene glycol (PG), neopentyl glycol (NPG). The critical surface tension (Υ$_{c}$) for the surface characteristics of a solid were estimated by Zisman plot, and the structure-property relationship was investigated by measuring the rheology of resins. The values of Υ$_{c}$ for glass of solid were 30.5 mNㆍm$^{-1}$ for UPE resin liquids. As the content of NPG in a PG/NPG glycol mixture increased, both the contact angle and the surface tension of the UPE resin liquids were found to decrease. The dynamic viscoelasticities of UPE resins with different glycol molar ratios were also measured. Shear rate dependence of viscosity and angular frequency dependence of storage, and loss modulus tended to decrease with increasing NPG content.
We measured shear viscosity of copoly(styrene(St)/butyl methacrylate(BMA)) (co-PSB) particles, with a capillary rheometer at $170^{\circ}C$, prepared by suspension polymerization with hydrophobic silica as a stabilizer. co-PSB particles with the weight average molecular weights of lower than 74,800 g/mol displayed a Newtonian behavior at low shear rates. With the weight average molecular weight exceeding 136,800 g/mol, co-PSB particles showed shear thinning against shear rates and the absolute value of the slopes between shear viscosity vs. shear rate increased. When the ratio between St and BMA changed from 7/3 to 5/5 to 3/7, shear viscosity and glass transition decreased despite similar molecular weights. When the ratio was 1/9, it showed a large increase in initial shear viscosity despite reduced glass transition. Shear viscosity exhibited an increase in proportion to carbon black concentration. The effect of carbon black concentration on the shear viscosity of co-PSB composites was less pronounced compared to varying molecular weights and/or compositional ratio.
The aim of this study was to increase compatibility of immiscible PLA/PCL blend by using electron beam irradiation in the presence of glycidyl methacrylate (GMA). The blends of PLA/PCL containing GMA were irradiated at doses of 10, 50 and 100 kGy and then the irradiated samples were characterized by observing morphology and rheological properties. Blends irradiated with 50 and 100 kGy showed greatly improved interfacial adhesion between two phases in the morphology. Complex viscosity of PLA/PCL(9/1) blend irradiated at dose of 100 kGy was about 100 times higher than that of pure PLA. We found that the compatibility of immiscible PLA/PCL could be improved by electron beam irradiation in the presence of GMA from the investigation of morphology and rheology.
The dispersion of organoclay in ethylene propylene diene terpolymer (EPDM) matrix was correlated with the rheological and swelling properties of nanocomposites. X-ray diffraction pattern (XRD) and transmission electron microscopic (TEM) analysis exhibited the disordered-intercalated structure of EPDM/organoclay nanocomposite. The extent of the disordered phase increased with increasing organoclay content up to a limiting value of 3 wt% after which equilibrium tended towards intercalation. The dispersion effect of organoclay in EPDM matrix was clarified by the physicochemical properties like rheological response and swelling thermodynamics in toluene. The increase in viscoelastic properties of EPDM nanocomposite with increasing organoclay content up to 3 wt%, followed by a subsequent decrease up to 4 wt%, was correlated in terms of the disordered and ordered states of the dispersed nano-clay sheets. Swelling measurements revealed that the change in entropy of the swelling increased with the increase in disorder level but decreased with the increase in intercalation level of organoclay in the disordered-intercalated nanocomposite. The increase in solvent uptake was comparable with the free volume in EPDM matrix upon inclusion of silicate particles, whereas the inhibition in solvent uptake for higher organoclay loading was described by bridging flocculation.
The thermal degradation of poly(hexamethylene guanidine) phosphate (PHMG) was studied by dynamic thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and pyrolysis-GC/MS (p-GC). Thermal degradation of PHMG occurs in three different processes, such as dephosphorylation, sublimation/vaporization of amine compounds and decomposition/ recombination of hydrocarbon residues. The kinetic parameters of each stage were calculated from the Kissinger, Friedman and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa methods. The Chang method was also used for comparison study. To investigate the degradation mechanisms of the three different stages, the Coats-Redfern and the Phadnis-Deshpande methods were employed. The probable degradation mechanism for the first stage was a nucleation and growth mechanism, $A_n$ type. However, a power law and a diffusion mechanism, $D_n$ type, were operated for the second degradation stage, whereas a nucleation and growth mechanism, $A_n$ type, were operated again for the third degradation stage of PHMG. The theoretical weight loss against temperature curves, calculated by the estimated kinetic parameters, well fit the experimental data, thereby confirming the validity of the analysis method used in this work. The life-time predicted from the kinetic equation is a valuable guide for the thermal processing of PHMG.
The surface of rutile titania nanoparticles was chemically modified by reacting with alkoxy silane. The surface and rheological properties in silicone oil having a wide range of viscosity were investigated. Total surface free energy($\gamma_S$) of the titania particles decreased from 53.12 to 26.94 mJ/$m^2$ as the silane used for surface treatment was increased from 0 to 5.0 wt$\%$. The surface free energy of neat silane was 25.5 mJ/$m^2$, which is quite close to that oftitania particles treated with 5.0 wt$\%$ silane. Due to the hydrophobic nature oftreated-titania, the contact angle was accordingly higher for polar solvent in the order of water>ethylene glycol> formamide>$\alpha$-bromonaphthalene. In sum of rheological behavior, as the applied shear stress or viscosity of the silicone oil increased, the titania particles tend to form layers and agglomerated clusters, showing shear-thinning and shear-thickening behaviors, sequentially. A good dispersion of discrete titania particles obeying a Newtonian flow behavior was achieved at a surface energy or low concentration of silane-treated titania particles in hydrophobic silicone oil.
The color stabilization of antimicrobial blends was studied by using poly(hexamethylene guanidine) phosphate (PHMG) as a highly efficient biocidal and nontoxic agent. The Taguchi method was used to determine the optimum conditions for the blending of PHMG in polypropylene (PP) matrix. To improve the yellowing phenomena, two kinds of stabilizer were used together: tetrakis[methylene(3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxyhydrocinnamate)](IN1010) from phenol and tris(2,4-di-t-butylphenylphosphite) (IF168) from phosphorus. According to blend composition and mixing condition, six factors were chosen, with five levels being set for each factor. The orthogonal array was selected as the most suitable for fabricating the experimental design, L25, with 6 columns and 25 variations. The-smaller-the-better was used as an optimization criterion. The optimum conditions for these parameters were 10 phr for PHMG, 2 phr for IN1010, 1 phr for IF168, 10 min for mixing time, $210^{\circ}C$ for mixing temperature, and 30 rpm for rotation speed. Under these conditions, the yellowness index of the blend was 1.52. The processibility of the blends was investigated by Advanced Rheometric Expansion System (ARES). The blend with 0.5 w% PHMG content, diluted with PP, exhibited an antimicrobial characteristic in the shake flask method.
The four different polymer compounds were manufactured with the two kinds of plasticizers [(di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate(DOS), and di-2-butyl sebacate(DBS)] and two different additive amounts(18, 26 phr) of the same plasticizer for making cable sheath for ship. Ethylene-vinylacetate, ethylene-propylene-diene-copolymer as matrix polymers and ethylene-vinylacetate grafted maleic anhydride as coupling agent were selected for compounding with fire retardant, closslinking agent, filler, and other additives besides plasticizer. The compound including DOS showed the higher ${\Delta}T$ than that including DBS at the same additive amount in the rheology test. And with increasing plasticizer, the compounds resulted in lower tensile strength and higher elongation by lubricating effect of plasticizer. DOS yielded better aging resistance and cold resistance than DBS due to the good heat resistance and low solidifying point of DOS compared to DBS.
Bacterial cellulose (BC) is widely used in the food industry for products such as nata de coco. The mechanical properties of BC hydrogels, including stiffness and viscoelasticity, are determined by the hydrated fibril network. Generally, Komagataeibacter bacteria produce gluconic acids in a glucose medium, which may affect the pH, structure and mechanical properties of BC. In this work, the effect of pH buffer on the yields of Komagataeibacter hansenii strain ATCC 53582 was studied. The bacterium in a phosphate and phthalate buffer with low ionic strength produced a good BC yield (5.16 and 4.63 g/l respectively), but there was a substantial reduction in pH due to the accumulation of gluconic acid. However, the addition of gluconic acid enhanced the polymer density and mechanical properties of BC hydrogels. The effect was similar to that of the bacteria using glycerol in another carbon metabolism circuit, which provided good pH stability and a higher conversion rate of carbon. This study may broaden the understanding of how carbon sources affect BC biosynthesis.
