In the system of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/dimethyl sulfoxide, the refractive index of polymer was very well matched to that of solvent and thus its scattered intensity could be minimized. After adding small amount of polystyrene latex particle (nominal diameter 200 nm), diffusion behavior of only probe particle was investigated against the concentration of polymer matrix by means of dynamic light scattering. The polymer concentration dependence of its reduced diffusion coefficient was able to be analysed with the stretched exponential function of the reduced concentration $C[{\eta}]$. In very dilute concentration regime, the depletion layer kept constant but at the early semi-dilute regime of $1{\leq}C[{\eta}]{\leq}2.5$, the concentration-dependent exponent of depletion layer ${\delta}$ was appeared to be -0.8 which was very close to theoretical one of -0.85. However it was also observed at the higher concentration that its layer thickness decreased more abruptly than theoretical expectation and this phenomenon was ascribed to Oosawa type attractive interaction between adjacent latex particles.

To improve transfection efficiency, we prepared histidine-low molecular weight water-soluble chitosan (LMWSC) having the potential to form complex with DNA as a cationic polymer. Histidine-LMWSC was synthesized by the esterification reaction and removing phthaloyl group. The histidine-LMWSC was characterized using FT-IR, $^1H$ NMR spectra. Histidine-LMWSC was complexed with plasmid DNA (pDNA) in various polymer/DNA (N/P) weight ratios, and the complex was identified using gel retardation assay. The particle sizes of the hisitidine-LMWSC/DNA complexes were measured on a DLS instrument by fixing the histidine-LMWSC/DNA weight ratio of 10/1. Owing to the utilization of a large excess amount of cationic LMWSC against anionic DNA, the particle size of histidine-LMWSC/DNA complexes was in the range of 100~200 nm. Therefore, histidine-LMWSC will be useful in the development of gene carriers.

Polyimide (PI) multilayer thin films were prepared by spin-coating from a poly(amic acid) (PAA) and poly(amic acid) ammonium salt (PAAS). PI was prepared from pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) PAA. Different compositions of PAAS were prepared by incorporating triethylamine (TEA) into PMDA-ODA PAA in dimethylacetamide. PI multilayer thin films were spin-coated from PMDA-ODA PAA and PAAS. The PAAS comprising cationic and anionic moieties were spherical with a particle size of $20{\sim}40\;nm$. Some particles showed layers with ammonium salts, despite poor ordering. Too much salt obstructed the interaction between the polymer chains and caused phase separation. A small amount of salt did not affect the interactions of the interlayer structure but did interrupt the stacking between chains. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) showed that the average decomposition temperature of the thin films was $611^{\circ}C$. All the films showed almost single-step, thermal decomposition behavior. The nanostructure of the multilayer thin films was confirmed by X -ray reflectivity (XRR). The LF 43 film, which was prepared with a 4:3 molar ratio of PMDA and ODA, was comprised of uniformly spherical PAAS particles that influenced the nanostructure of the interlayer by increasing the interaction forces. This result was supported by the atomic force microscopy (AFM) data. It was concluded that the relationship between the uniformity of the PAAS particle shapes and the interaction between the layers affected the optical and thermal properties of PI layered films.

This study is aimed to increase the activity of cathodic catalysts for PEMFCs(Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells). we investigated the temperature effect of 20wt% Pt/C catalysts at five different temperatures. The catalysts were synthesized by using chemical reduction method. Before adding the formaldehyde as reducing agent, process was undergone for 2 hours at the room temperature (RT), $40^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$, respectively. The performances of synthesize catalysts are compared. The electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was studied on 20wt% Pt/C catalysts by using a glassy carbon electrode through cyclic voltammetric curves (CV) in a 1M H2SO4 solution. The ORR specific activities of 20wt% Pt/C catalysts increased to give a relative ORR catalytic activity ordering of $80^{\circ}C$ > $100^{\circ}C$ > $60^{\circ}C$ > $40^{\circ}C$ > RT. Electrochemical active surface area (EAS) was calculated with cyclic voltammetry analysis. Prepared Pt/C (at $80^{\circ}C$, $100^{\circ}C$) catalysts has higher ESA than other catalysts. Physical characterization was made by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The TEM images of the carbon supported platinum electrocatalysts ($80^{\circ}C$, $100^{\circ}C$) showed homogenous particle distribution with particle size of about 2~3.5 nm. We found that a higher reaction temperature resulted in more uniform particle distribution than lower reaction temperature and then the XRD results showed that the crystalline structure of the synthesized catalysts are seen FCC structure.
On the background of general idea and technique of bioscience, medicine and engineering, tissue engineering aim at maintenance, improvement and repair of human body function through manufacturing and transplantation of artificial tissue and organ exchangeable human body. Basic material used in the area is scaffold that aid tissue and organ formation. Making scaffold, solvent-casting and particulate leaching technique is widely used in manufacturing of porous polymer scaffold. There are many types of particle including salt and gelatin. Salt is a most commonly used particulate because it is easily available and very easy to handle and gelatin particle is another candidate for this method because it is known as a material, which enhances cell attachment and proliferation. But there is no comparative study of two kinds of materials. In this study we compared the biocompatibility of the two scaffolds made from salt(salt scaffold) and gelatin particle (gelatin scaffold). These results demonstrated that gelatin scaffold showed better attachment of cells at the initial stage and better proliferation of cells. The better performance of gelatin scaffold is contributed to the better connection of pores in the same porosity.
Poly(DL-lactide-co-glycolide) nanoparticles were prepared by the modified spontaneous emulsification solvent diffusion method. Polymer solution was prepared by two water-soluble organic solvents, such as ethanol and acetone. Because of its biocompatible nature, PEG-PPG diblock copolymer was used as surfactant and stabilizer. The influence of several preparative variables on the nanoparticle formation, such as type and concentration of stabilizing agent, stirring methods, water/oil phase ratio and polymer concentration were investigated in order to control and optimize the process. After preparation of nanoparticles, particle size and distribution were evaluated by the light scattering particle analyzer. As results, the particle size was 50-200 nm and dispersibility was monodisperse. It was found that the appropriate selections of binary solvent mixtures and polymeric concentrations in both organic and aqueous phases could provide a good yield and favorable physical properties of PLGA nanoparticles.
Magneto-rheological elastomer (MRE) is a material which shows reversible and various modulus under magnetic field. Comparing to conventional rubber vibration isolator, MREs are able to absorb broader frequency range of vibration. These characteristic phenomena result from the orientation of magnetic particle (i.e., chain-like formation) in rubber matrix. In this study, silicone rubber was used as a matrix of MREs. Carbonyl iron particle (CIP) was used to give magnetic field reactive modulus of MRE. The surface of the CIP was modified with chemical reactants such as silane coupling agent and poly(glycidyl methacrylate), to improve interfacial adhesion between matrix and CIP. The mechanical properties of MREs were measured without the application of magnetic field. The results showed that the tensile strength was decreased while the hardness was increased with the addition of CIP. Also, surface modification of CIP resulted in the improvement of physical properties of MRE, but the degree of orientation of CIP became decreased. The analysis of MR effect was carried out using electromagnetic equipment with various magnetic flux. As the addition of CIP and magnetic flux increased, increment of MR effect was observed. Even though the surface modification of CIP gave positive effect on the mechanical properties of MRE, MR effect was decreased with the surface modification of CIP due to decrease of CIP orientation. Throughout this study, it was found that the loading amounts of CIP affected the mechanical properties of MRE, and surface property of CIP was an important factor on MR effect of MRE.
In this study, semibatch emulsion copolymerization of n-BA as adhesive component and MMA as coagulant component were carried out for the stable acrylic polymer latex in aqueous phase for polymer cement using LE-type nonionic surfactant as environmental friendly surfactant. The stable polymer emulsion was obtained with the increases of chain length(n) of this surfactant. The effect on the amount of LE-50 as nonionic surfactant were showed that the concentration of polymer latex were increased by increasing the amount of LE-50, whereas the average particle size were decreased by increasing the amount. The addition of functional monomer in initial reactor charge showed a significant effect on the final polymer concentration and the latex particle size. The single polymerization of each n-BA or MMA showed a very low concentration of polymer latex and very big particle size due to coagulation. In the polymerization composed of mixed monomer with MMA and n-BA, the larger the ratio of MMA to n-BA in the copolymers, the greater the amount of coagulum produced. It was found that a stable copolymers were obtained in the range of 15-35 % of n-BA. Moreover, incorporation of some functional monomers in addition to of main monomers became more stable polymer latex. Through DSC and IR analysis, the final polymer latex was composed by MMA/n-BA/AA/AM with a single Tg depending on the reaction conditions. As a result, the conditions of this acrylic polymerization could also be effectively controlled to get the desired final products.

We manufactured poly (L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) scaffolds impregnated demineralized bone particle (DBP) and hyaluronic acid (HA) by ice-particle leaching method and tested their ability of sustained release of brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). BDNF (50 and 200 ng) mixed with PLGA, DBP/PLGA, HA/PLGA and DBP/HA/PLGA scaffold. The release profiles of BDNF from BDNF loaded scaffolds were assayed using ELISA. Morphological changes of scaffolds by BDNF release were also observed by SEM. BDNF stably and sustainedly released from DBP/HNPLGA than from PLGA and DBP/PLGA scaffolds. DBP/HA/PLGA scaffolds showed the great structural changes, which demonstrated BDNF release amount from DBP/HA/PLGA scaffolds were highest in all groups. We suggest that BDNF loaded DBP/HNPLGA scaffold would be very useful for nerve regeneration.
