In this study, we have designed [Epoxy/PEG] polymer gel electrolyte systems by thermal curing the mixtures of epoxy, PEG, imidazole catalyst, and a plasticizer of 1:1 ethylene carbonate and propylene carbonate in the presence of $LiPF_6$ salt. In order to enhance the poor mechanical property of the Corresponding [Epoxy/PEG] gel electrolyte PVdF-HFP was incorporated into the system. The ionic conductivities of the polymer gel electrolytes were related to the amount of PVdF-HFP in blends as well as the amount of liquid electrolyte. The optimized gel system showed room-temperature conductivities of $2.56\times10^{-3}S/cm$.
Using poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as a polymer host, poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) as a plasticizer, potassium iodide and iodine as sources of $I^-/{I_3}^-$ PEO-PEG-KI/$I_2$ polymer gel electrolytes were prepared. Based on the polymer gel electrolytes, solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell(DSSC)s were fabricated. The content of PEG in the electrolyte was changed from 0 to 85%. The electrolyte showed self-supporting form through whole range of the PEG content. As the PEG content increased, the ionic conductivity and ${I_3}^-$ diffusivity increased and the light-to electrical energy conversion efficiency increased under irradiation of 100 $mWcm^{-2}$ simulated sunlight.

Electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLCs) have received a tremendous interest due to their suitability for diverse applications. They have been fabricated using different carbon based electrodes including activated carbons, single walled/multi walled carbon nano tubes. But, graphite which is one of the natural resources in Sri Lanka has not been given a considerable attention towards using for EDLCs though it is a famous carbon material. On the other hand, EDLCs are well reported with various liquid electrolytes which are associated with numerous drawbacks. Gel polymer electrolytes (GPE) are well known alternative for liquid electrolytes. In this paper, it is reported about an EDLC fabricated with a nano composite polyethylene oxide based GPE and two Sri Lankan graphite based electrodes. The composition of the GPE was [{(10PEO: $NaClO_4$) molar ratio}: 75wt.% PC] : 5 wt.% $TiO_2$. GPE was prepared using the solvent casting method. Two graphite electrodes were prepared by mixing 85% graphite and 15% polyvinylidenefluoride (PVdF) in acetone and casting n fluorine doped tin oxide glass plates. GPE film was sandwiched in between the two graphite electrodes. A non faradaic charge discharge mechanism was observed from the Cyclic Voltammetry study. GPE was stable in the potential windows from (-0.8 V-0.8 V) to (-1.5 V-1.5 V). By increasing the width of the potential window, single electrode specific capacity increased. Impedance plots confirmed the capacitive behavior at low frequency region. Galvanostatic charge discharge test yielded an average discharge capacity of $0.60Fg^{-1}$.

In this work, polymer - inorganic composites have prepared using polymer such as polyethylene glycol (PEG)/poly (methyl methacrylate, PMMA) and inorganic nanofillers materials such as TiO2 nanotubes (TiNTs)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The extensive structural, morphological and ionic properties revealed that the high surface area and tubular feature of nanofillers improved the interaction and cross-linking to polymer matrix which is significantly enhanced the ionic conductivity and electrical properties of composite electrolytes. Comparably high conversion efficiency ~4.5% has been observed by using the newly prepared PEG-TiNTs composite solid electrolyte as compared with PMMA-CNTs electrolyte based DSSCs (~3%). The detailed comparative properties would be discussed in term of their structural, morphology, ionic and photovoltaic properties.
Hybrid composite membranes were prepared by coating poly(ethylene oxide) and $SiO_2$ particles onto the porous polypropylene nonwoven matrix. Gel polymer electrolytes prepared by soaking the hybrid composite membranes in an organic electrolyte solution exhibited ionic conductivities higher than $1.1{\times}10^{-3}Scm^{-1}$ at room temperature. Dyesensitized solar cell (DSSC) employing the hybrid composite membrane with PEO and 10 wt % $SiO_2$ exhibited an open circuit voltage of 0.77 V and a short circuit current of 10.78 $mAcm^{-2}$ at an incident light intensity of 100 $mWcm^{-2}$, yielding a conversion efficiency of 5.2%. DSSC employing the hybrid composite membrane showed more stable photovoltaic performance than that of the DSSC assembled with liquid electrolyte.
Hydrosilylation reactions of 2.4.6.8-tetrahydro-2.4.6.8-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane with allyl butyrate catalyzed by Karstedt's, $H_2PtCl_6$ and Pt/C catalyst were studied and 2.4.6.8-tetra (propyl butyrate)-2.4.6.8-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane was obtained. The reaction order, activation energies and rate constants were determined. Ringopening polymerization of 2.4.6.8-tetra (propyl butyrate)-2.4.6.8-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane in the presence of $CaF_2$, LiF, KF and anhydrous potassium hydroxide in $60-70^{\circ}C$ temperature range was carried out and methylsiloxane oligomers with regular arrangement of propyl butyrate pendant groups were obtained. The synthesized products were studied by FTIR and NMR spectroscopy. The polysiloxanes were characterized by wide-angle X-ray, gel-permeation chromatography and DSC analyses. Via sol-gel processes of oligomers doped with lithium trifluoromethylsulfonate or lithium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, solid polymer electrolyte membranes were obtained. The dependences of ionic conductivity of obtained polyelectrolytes on temperature and salt concentration were investigated, and it was shown that electric conductivity of the polymer electrolyte membranes at room temperature changed in the range $3.5{\times}10^{-4}{\sim}6.4{\times}10^{-7}S/cm$.
Gel polymer electrolytes were prepared from poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoro propylene)[P(VdF-co-HFP)] that had higher mechanical properties as well as higher dielectric constant ($\varepsilon$=8~13) than other polymeric matrix. Mechanical properties and ionic conductivities have been investigated as a function of blend ratio of electrolyte solution and polymer matrix. Ethylene carbonate (EC)/${\gamma}$-butyrolactone (${\gamma}$-BL) and lithium triflate (LiCF$_3$SO$_3$) were used as solvent and salt, respectively. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, compression modulus, and dynamic shear modulus were evaluated. The highest ionic conductivity was 1.09$\times$10$^{-3}$ S/cm for PVH40 containing 28.6 wt% of P(VdF-co-HFP) at $25^{\circ}C$. Tensile strength, tensile modulus and compression modulus were increased with P(VdF-co-HFP) content and abruptly changed between PVH70 and PVH80. Dynamic shear moduli showed a typical gel behavior and changed with shear strain.
Bis(2-methoxyethyl)itaconate (bis(ME)I) was prepared for a new gel electrolyte containing double comb-like itaconate unit by esterification reaction of 2-methoxyethanol with itaconic acid. The copolymers were composed of AN/bis(ME)I = 9/1 ~ 1/1. The optimum mechanical properties and conductivity were obtained from the composition of AN/bis(ME)I = 5/1 and 6/1(25 ~ 35 wt%), LiClO4$_4$(15 wt%) and plasticizer (EC/PC = 1/1) (40 ~ 50 wt%). They showed a tough film and maintained a mechanical stability as a free standing film. The plasticized polymer gel electrolytes obtained from them showed ion conductivity of 8.12 ${\times}$ 10$_{-4}$ ~ 1.87 ${\times}$ 10$_{-3}$ S/cm. The maximum conductivity value obtained from our study was one order of magnitude higher than that of other PEO-based polymer electrolyte at ambient temperature.
Polymer electrolyte films consisting of poly(vinylidenefluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP), LiClO$_3$ and a mixture of ethylene carbonate (EC) and ${\gamma}$-butyrolactone (GBL) were examined in order to obtain the best compromise between high ionic conductivity, homogeniety, dimensional and electrochemical stability. Measurements of ionic conductivity, differential scanning calorimetry and linear sweep voltammetry have been carried out for various compositions. The highest conductivity of 3.8$\times$10$^{-3}$ S$cm^{-1}$ / at 3$0^{\circ}C$ were obtained for a film of 30(PVdF-HFP)+7.8LiClO$_4$+62.2EC/GBL. From the DSC study, it has been found that the PVdF-HFP gels are stable up to 10$0^{\circ}C$, and the salt lowers the melting temperature of crystalline part of PVdF by interacting sensitively with polymer segments. When Lithium metal is in contact with the gel films, it tends to undergo corrosion and the reaction products accumulate resulting in the formation of a passive film on Li electrode. As the aging time progresses, the interfacial resistance increases continuously. Anodic stability is measured to extend up to about 4.5 V vs. Li.
In spite of high ionic conductivity, the polymer gels have poor mechanical properties and high reactivity with lithium metal anode. To solve these problems, the dry solid systems and polymer composites have been intensively studied, due to their good mechanical, thermal, chemical, and electrochemical stability. The objectives of this experiment were to improve ionic conductivity and mechanical properties of the solid polymer electrolytes based on PEO-LiClO$_4$. To obtain higher ionic conductivity and better mechanical properties, ceramic or rubber phase was added in the PEO-LiClO$_4$(8:1) matrix. The results showed that ionic conductivity and mechanical properties were improved. The ionic conductivity of the samples was as high as 10$\^$-5/ S cm$\^$-1/. This value is similar to the best ionic conductivity ever reported in the solid drying system. To obtain better results, we used PEO with various molecular weights (600∼8000) and changed the salt contents. By using DSC, we found that the addition of salt reduced the crystallinity of PEO. The mobility of polymer dependence on salt contents was examined by FT-IR.
