  • It is now widely recognized that the disposal of packaging waste is an increasing environmental concern. Recent interest in polymer waste management of packaging materials has added incentive to the research. Poly(vinyl alcohol) is a readily biodegradable water-soluble polymer. However, this polymer cannot be processed by conventional extrusion technologies because the melting point of PVA is close to its decomposition temperature. Therefore, PVA films have been mostly prepared by solvent casting from water. Applications of PVA include sizing, binders, fibers, and films for agricultural chemicals and hospital laundry bags. A better understanding of PVA films, which also play important roles in the degradation of plastics, will expand the usage of PVA. Composite films based on PVA generally exhibit better mechanical and thermal properties than pure PVA. The aim of this review article is to review types, formation, and properties of PVA films and PVA based composite films used in packaging related researches.

  • Polymer/silicate nanocomposites were prepared via two-step manufacturing process: a master batch preparation and then mixing with matrix polymer. A hybrid of PMMA and Na-MMT with exfoliated structure was first prepared by emulsion polymerization of MMA in the presence of Na-MMT. For the case that SAN24, miscible with PMMA, is used as matrix, we could prepare a nanocomposite with exfoliated structure. However, SAN31 nanocomposite shows the aggregation and/or reordering of the silicate layers due to the immiscibility between SAN31 and PMMA.

  • By electrodeposition (ED) using a monomeric- and two polymeric coupling agents, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of carbon fiber/epoxy composites was investigated by fragmentation test. ED results were compared with the dipping and the untreated cases under dry and wet conditions. Multi-fiber composites (MFC) were used for the direct comparison for the untreated and the treated cases. Various treating conditions including time, concentration and temperature were evaluated, respectively. Under dry and wet conditions ED treatment exhibited much higher IFSS improvement compared to the dipping and the untreated cases. Monomeric- and polymeric coupling agents exhibited the comparative IFSS improvement. Adsorption mechanism between coupling agents and carbon fiber was analyzed in terms of the electrolyte molecular interactions during ED process based on to the chain mobility. The microfailure modes occurring from the fiber break, matrix and interlayer cracks were correlated to IFSS.

  • Polymer composites offered broad engineered applications, however their diversity get restricted owing to fluctuations in thermomechanical properties during heating or cooling hence great concern required prior their applications through thermomechanical analysis (TMA). Traditionally, TMA or dilatometry found to be simple, ideal, reliable, sensitive, excellent and basic thermal analytical technique. TMA provides valuable information on thermal expansion, glass transitions temperature (Tg), softening points, composition and phase changes on material of having different geometries simply by applying a constant force as a function of temperature. This compilation highlights the basics and experimental of TMA for both research and technical applications and also provide literature on TMA of polymers, hybrid composites, nanocomposites and their diverse applications.

  • An alternative strategy to .educe the percolation threshold of carbon black (CB) in polymer blends was investigated using random copolymer ternary blends of polystyrene (PS), poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA), and a styrene-methyl methacrylate random copolymer (SMMA). The target morphology was to selectively locate CB particles in the encapsulating layer of SMMA during melt mixing. The CB used in this study is BP-2000 from Cabot and has a strong selective affinity to PS. Even when the CB was premixed with SMMA, it moves to the PS phase during the melt mixing. However, we also observed the CB particles located at the interface between SMMA and PS phases. Through this study it is found that the interaction between polymers and CB particles is critical for selectively localizing CB particles in multi-component polymer blends. Although appropriate processing condition may retard the movement of CB particles to the polymer phase with affinity, it cannot prevent it completely and locate them to the SMMA phase, which is not thermodynamically favored. To locate CB particles in an encapsulating layer of ternary polymer blends, first of all, polymers forming it should have selective affinity to CB.

  • In this study, two biodegradable polymer(PLA, PBS) emulsions were treated on agricultural packaging paper such as fruit bagging paper. Water-repellency, mechanical properties, and SEM image with thermal aging were measured on the emulsion treated fruit bagging paper. Biodegradable polymers(such as poly lactic acid, poly butylene succinate) emulsion treated fruit bagging paper had higher water-repellency and strength than other water-repellent(such as acrylic repellent, linseed oil and paraffin wax) treated fruit bagging paper. According to FE-SEM results of polymer emulsion coated fruit bagging paper, the colloidal particles of emulsion after thermal treatment (looks like being) were adhered to the fibers. Thus, using biodegradable polymer emulsion is expected to protect a fruit for a long time.

  • In this study, the fire resistance capabilities of polypropylene fiber-reinforced polymer-modified cement mortar were assessed to guarantee the fire resistance fo this materials, commonly employed in the repair of concrete structures. Experimental outcomes revealed that an increased water and polymer content heightened the likelihood of spalling, while longer polypropylene fibers and elevated polymer concentrations proved more effective in mitigating spalling.

  • To study the effects of the acid group of functionalized MWNT (multiwalled carbon nanotube) on the thermal and mechanical properties of polyacrylonitrile(PAN) nanofibers, acid ($H_2SO_4/HNO_3$) treated MWNT (O-MWNT) were further functionalized by diazonium salt reaction with 5-aminoisophthalic acid (IPA). Compared to O-MWNT, IPA-MWNT with isophthalic acid group showed a better dispersion stability in polar solvents and IPA-MWNT/PAN composite film displayed lower heat of reaction (${\Delta}H$) than that of homo PAN when stabilized under air atmosphere. The continuous electrospun fibers were prepared using a conductive water bath. PAN fibers containing 1 wt% of IPA-MWNT showed an increase of tensile strength by 100% and tensile modulus by 240% compared to the PAN fibers without IPA-MWNT.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of fabric E-glass fiber reinforced laminated timber. Specimens used to Korean red pine(Pinus densiflora) and Japanese larch(Larix kaemferi). Fabric E-glass fiber was inserted in the solid wood with aqueous polymer-isocyanate resin(MPU-500). The results were as follows: 1. Aqueous polymer-isocyanate resin(MPU-500) was good resin to manufacture laminated timber. specially, it was satisfied to property standard of construction laminated timber(KS F 3021) except for two ply glass fiber. 2. Bending and shear strengths of solid wood inserted with fabric glass fibers were not different from control solid wood. But, proportional limit bending stress was increased following the number of fabric glass fibers. Therefore, it was considered that to improve the bending and shear strength of fabric glass fiber reinforced laminated timber, the glass fiber thickness and its mesh should be modified to fitness following working conditions.

  • Using combinations of carbon and glass fiber composites normally used for strengthening of concrete structures, the hybrid effect from strengthening concrete structures using the composite is studied. To produce the hybrid effects, the specimens were made with optimum proportions of carbon fibers with glass fibers. Then, direct tensile tests were conducted on the hybrid FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) specimens. Unlike the woven fiber sheet currently used in construction sites, the FRP specimens have to be directly combined with the fibers, which make the work very complicated. Therefore, direct tensile test specimens manufacturing method based on the combination of high-tension carbon fibers and E-type glass fibers was proposed and the effects of hybridization is studied through the direct tensile test. By comparing the ductility index, the modulus of elasticity, and the stress-strain curves of the specimens, the most optimum glass to carbon fiber combination ratio for the hybrid FRP was found to be 9 to 1 with ductile K-type epoxy. The study results are discussed in detail in the paper.
