  • We synthesized two novel polynorbornene derivatives, chiral poly(norbornene acid methyl ester) (C-PNME) and racemic poly(norbornene acid n-butyl ester) (R-PNME), which are potential low dielectric constant materials for applications in advanced microelectronic and display devices. Thin films of these polymers deposited on substrates were investigated by structural analyses using synchrotron grazing incidence X-ray scattering, specular reflectivity and ellipsometry. These analyses provided important information on the structure, electron density gradient across film thickness, chain orientation, refractive index and thermal expansion of the polymers in substrate-supported thin films. The structural characteristics and properties of the thin films were first dependent on the polymer chain' tacticity and further influenced by film thickness and thermal annealing.

  • Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars have been widely used as reinforcement for concrete structures. However, under elevated temperatures, the difference between the transverse coefficients of thermal expansion of FRP rebars and concrete may cause the splitting cracks of the concrete cover. As a result, the bonding of FRP-reinforced concrete may not sustain its function to transfer load between the FRP rebar and the surrounding concrete. The current study investigates the cracking resistance of FRP reinforced concrete against the thermal expansion based on a mechanical model that accounts for the tensile softening behavior of concrete. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed model, the critical temperature increments at which the splitting failure of the concrete cover occurs and the internal crack radii estimated are compared with the results obtained from the previous studies. Simplified equations for estimating the critical temperature increments and the minimum concrete cover required to prevent concrete splitting failure for a designated temperature increment are also derived for design purpose.

  • Purpose: Polymer capacitors are known to have very high reliability as compared with liquid electrolytic capacitors, but their capacity has been reported to decrease in charge and discharge at low temperature. The purpose of this study to clarify these characteristics. Methods: In order to clarify these characteristics, charging-discharging tests were carried out for 200 hours with three different capacities and at 5 different temperature from $5^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$. Results: As a result of the test, it was confirmed that the capacity of the polymer capacitor was decreased with higher capacity and lower temperature. Conclusion: Such a failure phenomenon was caused by the shrinkage and expansion characteristics of the polymer used therein, it is presumed that this failure phenomenon is due to the complex pore structure made by etching.

  • Natural fiber henequen/unsaturated polyester (UPE) composites were fabricated by means of a compression molding technique using chopped henequen fibers treated at various electron beam (EB) dosages. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS), dynamic mechanical properties, and thermal expansion behavior were investigated through a single fiber microbonding test, fractographic observation, dynamic mechanical analysis, and thermomechanical analysis, respectively. The results indicated that the interfacial and dynamic mechanical properties significantly depended on the level of the EB treatment irradiated onto the henequen fiber surfaces. The effect of EB treatment on the IFSS, storage modulus and fracture surface of the henequen/UPE composites agreed with each other. The results of this study also suggested that the modification of henequen fiber surfaces at 10 kGy EB is the most effective for improving the interfacial properties of the henequen/UPE composites.

  • A new thermal bimorph actuator for large out-of-plane displacement is designed, fabricated and tested. The deflecting beam is composed of polyimide, heater, and polyvinyl difluorides with tetrafluoroethylene (PVDF-TrFE). The large difference of coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of two polymer layers (polyimide and PVDF-TrFE) can generate a significant deflection with relatively small temperature rise. Compared to the most conventional micro actuators based on MEMS (micro-electro mechanical system) technology, a large displacement, over 1 mm at 20 mW, could be achieved. Additionally, we can achieve response time of 14.6 ms, resonance frequency of 12 Hz, and reliability ability of $10^5$ cycles. The proposed actuator can find applications where a large vertical displacement is needed while maintaining compact overall device size, such as a micro zooming lens, micro mirror, micro valve and optical application.

  • A novel biomaterial capable of incorporating biotinylated biomolecule has been synthesized. Our strategy is to biotinylate one-dimensional electroactive polymers and use a bridging streptavidin protein on Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) organized films. These copolymers are derivatized with long alkyl chains and biotin moieties to bind, respectively, to the hydrophobic surface and the biotinylated species, through the biotin and streptavidin complexation. We utilize the polymer assembly approach to attach a signal transducing biomolecule biotinylated phycoerythrin (B-PE) into this novel biomaterial by binding the unoccupied biotin binding sites on the bound streptavidin (4 sites total). The pressure-area isotherm of the protein injected monolayer showed area expansion. A characteristic fluorescent emission peak at 576nm was detected from the monolayer transferred onto a solid substrate. These observations demonstrated the promise of the organized thin polymer assemblies for their application to the sensor system.

  • Polyimide/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite films, for potential use in high performance microelectronics and aerospace applications, were prepared by mixing a polyisoimide (PII) solution and a CNT suspension in NMP, followed by casting, evaporation and thermal imidization. The CNTs were modified by a nitric acid treatment to improve the thermal and electrical properties, as well as to provide good dispersion of the CNTs in a polymer matrix. The formation of functional groups on the modified CNT was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy revealed the modified CNTs to be well dispersed in the polyimide matrix, with a uniform diameter of ca. 50 nm. The thermal stability of the films containing the CNTs was improved due to the enhanced interfacial interaction and good dispersion between the polyimide matrix and modified CNTs. In addition, the thermal expansion coefficient of the composites films was slightly decreased, but the dielectric constants increased linearly with increasing CNT content.

  • In this study, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV)/graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposite films containing various content of GO were prepared using solution casting method. The effect of GO content on Young's modulus and dispersion of GO in PHBV matrix was investigated. Also, the thermomechanical properties, oxygen transmission rates and hydrolytic degradation of PHBV/GO nanocomposite films were studied. The addition of GO into PHBV improves the Young's modulus and decreases thermal expansion coefficient. The improvement can be mainly attributed to good dispersion of GO and interfacial interactions between PHBV and GO. Furthermore, PHBV/GO nanocomposite films show good oxygen barrier properties. PHBV/GO nanocomposites show lower hydrolytic degradation rates with increasing content of GO.

  • The network structure of Ni-coated carbon black (NCB) composites filled with phenolic resin was investigated by means of using scanning electron microscopy, viscosity, interfacial tension, shrinkability, Flory-Huggins interaction parameters, and swelling index. The electrical properties of the composites have been characterized by measurement of the specific conductivity as a function of temperature. Additionally, the variation of conductivity with temperature for the composites has been reported and analyzed in terms of the dilution volume fraction, relative volume expansion, and barrier heights energy. The thermal stability of phenolic-NCB composites has been also studied by means of the voltage cycle processes. The experimental data of EMI wave shielding were analyzed and compared with theoretical calculations. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, hardness and elongation at break (EB) of NCB-phenolic resin composites were also investigated.
