In this paper, the 5-axis tool path that has been generated from the original surface is, newly generated from the offset polyhedral mesh. In this approach, the interference check between two solid models can be simplified to that of offset polyhedral mesh and axis line. The tool path computation and interference check based on the offset mesh is simpler and faster than that based on the original surface. But 5-axis tool path generation using this approach is able to apply only for ball endmill and still takes longer time than 3-axis tool path generation.

Reaching fault tolerance in technological systems requires to detect malfunctions. This paper presents a diagnostic method that is robust with respect to unknown-but-bounded uncertainties of the dynamical model and the measurements. By using models of the faultless and the faulty behaviours, a state-set observer computes polyhedral sets from which the consistency of the models with the interval measurements is determined. The diagnostic result is proven to be complete, i.e., the set of faults obtained by the diagnostic algorithm includes the actual fault. The algorithm is illustrated by an application example.
This paper proposes a new algorithm for recognizing polyhedral objects using a single 2-D image. It is base don a new representation scheme having two level hierarchey. In the lower level, geometrical features of each primitive surface are represented using their signatures and the variation of signature due to rotation is represented suing the rotation map. In the higher level, topological features are represented in the inter-surface description table(SDT). Based on the proposed representaton scheme, loer level database searched to find a matching primitive surface. The srotation map determines the degree of rotation as well as the matchness. If all surfaces in a test object find their matching primitive surfaces, its structural information is compared with the SDTs of object models. If primitive surfaces of a test object equal to tha tof certain model and satisfy inter-surfaces relationship in SDT, a test object is recognized as the model.
In this paper, we identify performance issues in executing compute kernels from PolyBench, which includes compute kernels that are the core computational units of various data-intensive workloads, such as deep learning and data-intensive applications, on Processing-in-Memory (PIM) devices. Therefore, using our in-house simulator, we measured and compared the various performance metrics of workloads based on traditional out-of-order and in-order processors with Processing-in-Memory-based systems. As a result, the PIM-based system improves performance compared to other computing models due to the short-term data reuse characteristic of computational kernels from PolyBench. However, some kernels perform poorly in PIM-based systems without a multi-layer cache hierarchy due to some kernel's long-term data reuse characteristics. Hence, our evaluation and analysis results suggest that further research should consider dynamic and workload pattern adaptive approaches to overcome performance degradation from computational kernels with long-term data reuse characteristics and hidden data locality.
The three dimensional(3D) shape reconstruction from two dimensional(2D) cross-sections can be completed through three main phases : the input compilation, the triangular grid formation, and the smooth surface construction. In the input compilation phase, the cross-sections are analyzed to exctract the input data required for the shape reconstruction. This data includes the number of polygonized contours per cross-section and the vertices defining each polygonized contour. In the triangular grid formation phase, a triangular grid, leading to a polyhedral approximations, is constructed by extracting all the information concerning contour links between two adjacent cross- sections and then performing the appropriate triangulation procedure for each contour link. In the smooth surface construction phase, a smooth composite surface interpolating all vertices on the triangular grid is constructed. Both the smooth surface and the polyhedral approximation can be used as reconstructed models of the object. This paper proposes a new method for reconstructing the geometric model of a 3D objdect from a sequence of planar contours representing 2D cross-sections of the objdect. The method includes the triangular grid formation algorithms for contour closing, one-to-one branching, and one-to-many braanching, and many-to-many branching. The shape reconstruction method has been implemented on a SUN workstation in C.

We represent a method of 3-D object recognition using multi images in this paper. The recognition process is executed as follows. Object models as prior knowledgement are generated and stored on a computer. To extract features of a recognized object, three CCD cameras are set at vertices of a regular triangle and take images of an object to be recognized. By comparing extracted features with generated models, the object is recognized. In general, it is difficult to recognize 3-D objects because there are the following problems such as how to make the correspondence to both stereo images, generate and store an object model according to a recognition process, and effectively collate information gotten from input images. We resolve these problems using the method that the collation on the basis of features independent on the viewpoint, the generation of object models as enumerating some candidate models in an early recognition level, the execution a tight cooperative process among results gained by analyzing each image. We have made experiments based on real images in which polyhedral objects are used as objects to be recognized. Some of results reveal the usefulness of the proposed method.
This paper describes a local modification capability on shell meshes, which can change a 'constant or variable radius of rounding for the s h q edges of the stamping die shoulder in the mesh. The algorithm consists of the followin_e three main steps; (1) the rounding area for sharp edges of a die shoulder are detected from the given shell mesh, (2) a rolling-ball surface with a given constant or variable radius is generated, which is contacti% with two incident face groups of the sharp edges, (3) the rounding area of the mesh is cut off, and a new mesh for the rolling-ball surface is generated and implanted into the gap. Owing to this rounding modification capability, CAE engineers can examine various cases based on the existing dies by scanning them to form polyhedral models and then changing radii of die shoulders for stamping process simulation.
This paper discusses a method to generate the tool path for NC machining of automobile panel dies. The source data representing a panel die may be generated from digitizing machines, other CAD/CAM systems via IGES files, of compound surface models. From the source data, three types of interferencefree tool paths are generated automatically ; a parallel (Cartesian), an isometric, and a pencil cutting tool path. For the interference-free tool path, a polyhedral model composed of several triangles, and an 'offset triangle' approach are exploited. Finally, some practical examples are illustrated.
Carbon nanotubes are due to their outstanding mechanical properties destined for a wide range of possible applications. Since the knowledge of the material behavior is vital regarding the possible applications, experimental and theoretical studies have been conducted to investigate the properties of this promising material. The aim of the present research is the calculation of mechanical properties and of the mechanical behavior of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The numerical simulation was performed on basis of a molecular mechanics approach. Within this approach two different issues were taken into account: (i) the nanotube geometry and (ii) the modeling of the covalent bond. The nanotube geometry is captured by two different approaches, the roll-up and the exact polyhedral model. The covalent bond is modeled by a structural molecular mechanics approach according to Li and Chou. After a short introduction in the applied modeling techniques, the results for the Young's modulus for several SWCNTs are presented and are discussed extensively. The obtained numerical results are compared to results available in literature and show an excellent agreement. Furthermore, deviations in the geometry stemming from the different models are given and the resulting differences in the numerical findings are shown. Within the investigation of the deformation mechanisms occurring in SWCNTs, the basic contributions of each individual covalent bond are considered. The presented results of this decomposition provide a deeper understanding of the governing deformation mechanisms in SWCNTs.
