The feeding habits of the redbanded searobin Lepidotrigla guentheri were studied using 186 specimens collected from September to November, 2006, in the coastal waters off Gori, Korea. The sizes of L. guentheri ranged from 7.1 to 16.7 cm total length(TL). L. guentheri is a bottom-feeding carnivore that consumes mainly shrimp, especially Leptochela sydniensis, amphipods, and crabs. Its diet also includes small quantities of stomatopods, mysids, cumaceans, euphausiids, polychaetes, and copepods. Our feeding-strategy graphical method reveled that L. guentheri is a specialized feeder, with a narrow niche width. L. guentheri mainly consumed shrimp of all size classes and did not show significant ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Smaller individuals(7-11 cm TL) secondly consumed amphipods, with the portion of amphipods in the total diet decreasing as body size increased. Prey size increased significantly as the fish grew in size.

In order to know whether polychaetes could be used as an appropriate organism for the detection of genotoxicity, DNA strand breaks were evaluated in blood cells of a nereidae worm (Perinereis aibuhitensis) exposed to various aquatic chemical pollutants (e.g. Cd, Pb, Pyrene, Benaor[a]pyrene). Hydrogen peroxide increased DNA strand breaks up to the highest concentration (10 $\mu$M). Higher concentration than 0.1 $\mu$M showed a significantly more DNA damage than control. Cadmium and lead also showed higher DNA damage than control, over 1.0 and 1 $\mu$g/L, respectively. In case of pyrene, DNA damage was detected even at 0.001 $\mu$g/L. However, DNA damage decreased due to apoptosis at the highest concentration of pyrene and Pb. This study suggested that the polythaetous blood cells could be used effectively for screening genotoxic contaminants in the environment.
The spatial distribution and composition of the mesozooplankton community in the southeastern Barents Sea were observed at 17 stations, from 12 to 28 July 2002. Six taxa of zooplankton were found, including tintinnids, copepods, cumaceans, appendicularians, polychaetes, and barnacle larvae. Copepods were dominant, comprising 74% of the community. The copepod species Limnocalanus grimaldii, Pseudocalanus acuspes, Calanus glacialis, Calanus finmarchicus, and Microsetella norvegica, and the cumacean species Diastylis rathkei and Campylaspis rubicunda were identified. The overall mean abundance of the zooplankton was 72 indiv.l0 $\mu \textrm m^{-3}$ in the study area, ranging from 4 to 197 indiv.l0$\mu \textrm m^{-3}$. Zooplankton was more abundant at the oceanic than the coastal stations. The highest biomass measured was 97.4mg $\mu \textrm m^{-3}$, the mean biomass was 36.9 mg 10$\mu \textrm m^{-3}$, 93% of which was copepods. Pseudocalanus acuspes, C. glacialis, and C. finmarchicus predominated, accounting for 61% of abundance and 86% of biomass. Spatial distributions of the zooplankton community in the study area depended on the variations in water temperature and salinity, which were influenced by freshwater runoff from the continent.
This study was conducted to investigate the community structure and distributional pattern of meiobenthos on the sediment of the mangrove forest and seagrass bed in the Chuuk lagoon. The samples were collected by an acryl corer at 14 stations. Nematodes were the most abundant meiobenthos, followed by ciliophorans and polychaetes; these taxa comprised more than 70% of the total abundance at all stations. The meiofuuna sampled in seagrass bed were more diverse than those of mangrove substrates. Total densities were higher in mangrove stations than other sites, averaging 1,671 to $2,967inds/10cm^2$. Densities in seagrass area ranged between 605 and $1,053inds/10cm^2$. Biomasses, however, were higher in seagrass bed $(975-2,167{\mu}g\;free\;dry\;weight/10cm^2)$ than in mangrove area $(1,064-1,180{\mu}g\;free\;dry\;weight/10cm^2)$. Ordination chart by MDS of major meiofaunal density in each station showed difference between mangrove area and seagrass area in terms of habitat of meiobenthos.
A nereid polychaete, Nicon sinica Wu and Sun, 1979, was newly recorded in Korean fauna. The specimens were collected in the mud bottom by a dredge in Yellow Sea, Korea. The species was described with figures, and the key to genera was revised. Adding this Nicon sinica, a total of 34 species representing 13 genera are known to the Korean nereid polychaetes.
Feeding habits of Zoarces gilli collected in the coastal water off Gadeok-do, Korea from March 1998 to February 1999 were studied. Z. gilli was a carnivore and consumed mainly shrimps, gammarid amphipods, fishes, bivalves and cumaceans. Its diets also included small quantities of copepods, caprellid amphipods, ostracods, crabs, squids, gastropods, ophiuroids and polychaetes. It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Individuals of small size (10~15 cmSL) fed mainly on small prey organisms such as gammarid amphipods, bivalves, cumaceans and ostracods. However, larger shrimps and fishes were heavily selected with increasing fish size.
The feeding habits of Hoplobrotula armata were studied using 269 specimens collected in the coastal waters of Geomun-do, Korea. The size of the specimens ranged from 5.6-56.8 cm in total length (TL). H. armata is a canivore that consumes mainly teleosts and decapods (shrimp, crabs and hermit crabs). Its diet also includes gammarid amphipods, cephalopods, polychaetes and copepods. Smaller individuals (<20 cm TL) fed mainly on fish, shrimp and crabs. The proportion of shrimp and crabs decreased as body size increased, whereas the consumption of fish gradually increased. Fish accounted for almost the entire stomach contents of individuals (larger than 40 cm TL).
We investigated the benthic polychaete assemblage in Gwangyang Bay and Yeosu Sound in February 1997. The sediment was an almost entirely muddy facies. The benthic macrofauna comprised 295 species occurring at a mean density of 875 $indiv./m^2$. Polychaetes were the major faunal component; there were 94 species at mean density 765 $indiv./m^2$. The highest abundance and species richness occurred in the Myodo south and north channels, in the mouth of Gwangyang Bay, and in the Noryang channel mouth. The most abundant polychaete was Tharyx sp. (47.9%), followed in rank order by Heteromastus filiformis (9.6%), Melinna cristata (9.3%), and Lumbrineris longifolia (7.3%). Cluster analysis divided the study area into four station groups based on station similarities in benthic polychaete assemblages: the Glycinde-Prionospio cluster in the western inner bay, the H. filiformis cluster in the middle inner bay, the Melinna-Lumbrineris cluster in the Myodo south-north channel, and the Tharyx cluster in the eastern main channel region. The sediment type of Gwangyang Bay has changed gradually from sandy to muddy. Dominant species have also changed from Chone teres and Lagis bocki to Tharyx sp., which is a potential organic pollution indicator.
Feeding habits of juvenile Takifug niphobles collected from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay were studied. T. niphobles (2$\~$8 cm SL) was a carnivore which consumed mainly amphipods (gammarid and caprellid amphipods), crabs, shrimps and gastropods. Its diets included minor quantities of polychaetes, copepods, tanaids and isopods. T. niphobles showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. Small individuals preyed mainly on gammarid amphipods, caprellid amphipods and gastropods. However, crabs and shrimps were heavily selected with increasing fish size.
A maldanid polychaete, Axiothella quadrimaculata Augener, 1914, is newly recorded in Korean fauna. Genus Axiothella is found for the first time in Korean waters. The specimen was collected in the Eisenia bicyclis bed by SCUBA diving. The species is described with figures and the key to genera was revised. Including this Axiothella quadrimaculata, a total of 18 species representing 13 genera are known to the Korean Maldanid polychaetes.
