Poly(ethylene 2,6-naphthalate) (PEN)/Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) copolymers were synthesized by two step reaction during the melt copolymerization process. The first step was the esterification reaction of dimethyl-2,6-naphthalenedicarbox-ylate (2,6-NDC) and ethylene glycol (EG). The second step was the condensation polymerization of bishydroxyethylnaphthalate (BHEN) and PEG. The copolymers contained 10 mol% of PEG units with different molecular weights. Structures and thermal properties of the copolymers were studied by using $^1{H-NMR}$, DSC, TGA, etc. Especially, while the intrinsic viscosities of PEN/PEG copolymers increased with increasing molecular weights of PEG, but the glass transition temperature, the cold crystallization temperature, and the weight loss temperature of the copolymers decreased with increasing molecular weights of PEG. Consequently, the hydrophilicities by means of contact angle measurement and moisture content of the copolymer films were found to be significantly improved with increasing molecular weights of PEG.
Polystyrene particles (PS) with poly(ethylene glycol) units on surface were formed by an emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization using styrene, poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEG-MMA) or poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEG-diMMA) at pH 7, and followed by freeze-drying to give the corresponding powders. The structures of PS particles were confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy, and the particle size and distribution the PS particle were observed by scanning electron microscopy and particle analyzer. Monodisperse polymer particles were obtained at a concentration of PEG-MMA 2∼5 mol% or PEG-diMMA 1 mol% relative to styrene. The highest zeta potential of polymer surface was measured to be 183 mV at a polymer of PEG-MMA 5 mol%, which was measured in dielectric medium by means of ELS-8000 dynamic light scattering.
Waterborne polyurethane as a new polymer electrolyte was synthesized by using relatively hydrophilic polyols. The morphology of polyurethane was changed as it was dispersed in water. In contrast to polyurethane ionomer, waterborne polyurethane did not form an ionic cluster but produced a binary system composed of hydrophilic and hydrophobic groups. In the colloidal system, the former and the latter existed at outward and inward, respectively. Waterborne polyurethane was prepared from poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) /poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) copolymer, 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate(MDI), ethylene diamine as a chain extender, and three ionization agents, 1,3-propane sultone, sodium hydride and lithium hydroxide. PEG/PPG copolymer was used for suppressing the crystallinity of PEG and N-H bond was ionized for increasing the electrochemical stability of polyurethane. Low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(ethylene glycol dimethyl ether) (PEGDME) were used as plasticizers. DSC, FT-IR and $^1$H-NMR of the waterborne polyurethane were measured. Also, the ionic conductivity of solid polymer electrolytes based on waterborne polyurethane and various concentrations of low molecular weight poly(ethylene glycol) or PEGDME were measured by AC impedance.
This paper reports the combined effects of the triblock copolymer surfactant poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(propylene glycol)-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-PPG-PEG) and imidazole on the opto-electrical and mechanical properties of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-based thin films prepared via vapor phase polymerization (VPP) using ferric p-toluenesulfonate as a catalyst. Various PEDOT-based thin films were synthesized using PEG-PPG-PEG and imidazole alone and in combination to compare and correlate their effects on film properties. The improved conductivity of the PEDOT films was higher than $1300S{\cdot}cm^{-1}$ when the surfactant and imidazole were used together. The PEG-PPG-PEG chain length was also varied to identify the best conditions for the VPP-based preparation of PEDOT thin films.
PEG(poly(ethylene glycol)) acrylate/PPG(poly(propylene glycol)) acrylate (PEG/PPG) was prepared using UV induced photopolymerization method to investigate gas permeation properties of the membrane. The effect of PPG content on the solubility, diffusivity, and permeability of $CO_2$, $O_2$, and $N_2$ in PEG/PPG membrane is reported at $25^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$. PEG/PPG (9:1) membrane exhibits $CO_2$ permeability coefficient of 28.9 barrer and $CO_2$/$N_2$ pure gas selectivity of 57.9 at $25^{\circ}C$. Permeability coefficient of increased with increasing with PPG content in the membrane. PEG/PPG (5:5) membrane shows $CO_2$ permeability coefficient of 78.9 barrer and $CO_2$/$N_2$ pure gas selectivity of 33.2 at $25^{\circ}C$.
In order to study the radiation curing behavior of poly(ethylene glycol 400) dimethacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, we investigated the influence of temperature and photoinitiator concentration by photo-DSC. As the number of ethylene glycol unit, the concentration of photoinitiator, and the reaction temperature increased, the reaction speed of PEG400DMA and EGDMA increased. Although the reaction speed of PEG400DMA was lower than EGDMA, the overall conversion of PEG400DMA was high.
The synthesis of poly(N,N-dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA)-block-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)) copolymer has been carried out and the block copolymer was characterized by FT-IR, DSC, and $^1$H-NMR. The formation of polymeric nanoaggregation was observed in the solution mixture of poly(DMAEMA) -block-PEG copolymer and poly (ethyl acrylamide) (EAAm) due to the intermolecular interaction via hydrogen bond between DMAEMA and poly(EAAm). The formation of polymeric nanoaggregation was observed above critical micelle concentration (CMC).
Polyurethane(PU) microgels were synthesized from poly(caprolactone) diol(PCD) and/or poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG), diisocyanate and 1,2,6-hexane triol by solution polymerization method. A critical gelation concentration of the PU microgels with, mole ratios of PCD/PEG were the important factors influencing the formation and property microgel or macrogels. The physical and thermal properties of the PU microgels prepared with depending upon the structure of diisocyanate, mole ratio of PCD/PEG, and molecular weight of PEG were investigated. It was found that PU microgels were distributed by polydisperse, spherical small particles below 300nm and showed the properties of low viscosity.
Poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PCL-PEG-PCL) multiblock copolymers at various hydrophobic-hydrophilic ratios were successfully synthesized by the chain extension of triblock copolymers through isocyanate (hexamethylene diisocyanate). Biodegradable films were prepared from the resulting multiblock copolymers using the casting method. The mechanical properties of the films were improved by chain extension of the triblock copolymers, whereas the films prepared by the triblock copolymers were weak and brittle. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) of the multiblock copolymer film showed that the hydrophilic PEG had segregated on the film surface. This is consistent with the observed contact angle of the films.
We prepared norfloxacin (NFX)-incorporated polymeric micelle using poly ($\varepsilon$-caprolactone)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PCL/PEG, CE) diblock copolymers. Particle size was from 60 to 200 nm according to the PCL block length. Their critical association concentration (CAC) was decreased according to the increase of PCL block length. $^1H$-NMR study showed core-shell type micelle structures of CE diblock copolymers in the aqueous environment. Drug release from polymeric micelle was continued over 2 days. Duration of drug release was varied according to the PCL block length and drug contents. At antimicrobial activity test, polymeric micelle showed almost similar cytotoxicity compared to NFX itself.
