Feasibility Study of Constructed Wetland System for Sewage Treatment in Rural Area

  • Field experiment was performed from August 1996 to December 1999 to examine the feasibility of constructed wetland system for sewage treatment in rural areas. A pilot system was installed in Konkuk University and the effluent of septic tank for school building was used as an influent to the wetland treatment basin. The system was composed of sand and reed, and operated continuously including winter time. Average removal rate of about 70% was observed for BOD, COD, and SS, about 50% for T-P, and about 25% for T-N. The reason for poor T-N removal might be due to high loading rate and short retention time. The system demonstrated satisfactory effluent concentration and stable performance in growing season. And it also worked adequately in wintertime even below $10^{\circ}C$ without freezing, and removal was still significant. The amount removed in BOD, COD, and SS was almost the same as in the growing season, and the amount removed in nutrients was about half of the one in growing season. Overall performance of the experimental system was compared with existing data base (NADB, 1994), and it was within the range of general system performance. As study period increased, removal rates for BOD, COD, SS, and T-P were consistently maintained and even enhanced, but removal rate for T-N decreased slightly. Wetland system was thought to be a feasible alternative for sewage treatment in rural area considering its low cost and low maintenance requirement. However, the effluent of the experimental wetland system often exceeded current effluent water quality standards, therefore, further treatment could be required if the effluent should be discharged to public waters. Wetland system of interest locates in rural area and is a part of rural ecosystem, therefore, ultimate disposal of reclaimed sewage for agricultural purpose or subsequent land treatment might be available and further research in this matter is recommended.

과황산나트륨과 제일철 촉매를 이용한 나프탈렌 산화 시 토양이 미치는 영향 평가 (Effect of the Presence of Soil on the Ferrous Catalyzed Sodium Persulfate Oxidation of Naphthalene)

  • Batch tests were carried out to examine the influence of the presence of soil and Fe(II) sorption capacity of soil on the ferrous catalyzed sodium persulfate oxidation for the destruction of organic pollutants in the application of in-situ chemical oxidation. Laboratory column tests were also conducted to investigate the transport of oxidant and catalyst in contaminated groundwater. Test results proved that Fe(II) was adsorbed on soil surface, and thus soil behaved as a heterogeneous catalyst, enhancing the naphthalene removal rate up to 50%. Column tests that were conducted with and without dissolved Fe(II) showed that naphthalene removal ratio were 24% and 25%, respectively. The removal efficiency was not enhanced with dissolved Fe(II), since the dissolved Fe(II) flew out of the column as the oxidant progressively injected into the column saturated with Fe(II). It indicates that the injected oxidant could not interact with dissolved Fe(II). But target organic pollutant was degraded in soil column system, implying that sulfate radical was produced by the reaction of dissolved persulfate with Fe(II) adsorbed on soil.

  • Flue gas control systems for small-scale combustors must be designed to provide highly effective removal of three criteria pollutants (S $O_{2}$, N $O_{x}$ and particulate matter), and must be safe, reliable and small. These requirements make dry, regenerative clean-up process particularly attractive and this paper describes a new concept for integrated pollutant control : a filter comprised of layered, gas permeable membranes that act as an S $O_{2}$ sorbant, a N $O_{x}$ reduction catalyst and a particulate filter. A mixed metal oxide sorbent, Cu-Ce was used as a sorbent/catalyst and the activity was compared with Cu-7Al. The S $O_{2}$ removal eficiency of Cu-Ce was increased with temperature increase up to 500$^{\circ}$C and the catalytic activity for NO was higher than that of Cu-7Al. By the sulfation of Cu-Ce, the reduction activity was increased at the temperature higher than 350$^{\circ}$C. The regeneration of Cu-Ce was very fast and some amount of elemental sulfar was found.

실내 공기정화 시스템에 의한 실내 오염입자의 제거특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Removal Characteristics of Indoor Air Pollutants using an Air Cleaning System)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the particle removal characteristics of a commercial air cleaner based on the electrostatic precipitator. The air cleaner consists of a positive corona precharger to precharge particles and a collector to remove the charged particles. The test for particle removal efficiency is conducted with tobacco smoke particles of 1.27${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in mass median diameter. The result of one-pass filtration test shows that the filtration efficiency is more than 90% for the particles larger than 2.5 Um, while the efficiency for the particles of 0.5~1.0${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in case of 4.18 CMM is 70%. For the test room of 5,800${\times}$3,400${\times}$2,600㎣, the concentration of tobacco smoke particles decreases up to 30% of initial values within 30 minutes due to natural reduction and up to 90% of initial values within 30 minutes with the air cleaner operation.

  • The diesel engine exhaust gas is know as one of the causes to produce photochemical smog, which causes damage on environmental. However, due to the high thermal efficiency and low carbon dioxide emission, the usage of a diesel engine is prevailed. In this study, the DC non-thermal plasma technology used to the particulate matter (PM) aftertreatment. The exhaust gas characteristics and energy density were investigated on the dynamometer test bed and chassis dynamometer with CVS-75 mode in a passenger diesel car. It was reported that the smoke removal efficiency has around the 70% in the dynamometer test with 80W energy consumption and the PM removal efficiency has the 68% in the real car test. The NOx also reduced the 20% according to electrode type respectively. Considering these results, plasma technology is one of the ways to simultaneously removing method the particulate matter (PM) and NOx.

슬러지 침전성이 DNR 공정에 미치는 영향 평가 (The Effect of Sludge Settleability on the Performance of DNR Process)

  • The sludge settleability is a key factor for operating activated sludge process as well as BNR (biological nutrient removal) process, because the poor sludge settling causes an increase of suspended solid in the effluent. In order to improving the sludge settleability, a settling agent such as iron dust can be applied. In this study, the effect of sludge settleability on the performance of DNR (Daewoo nutrient removal) process was investigated with GPS-X, which is the popular wastewater treatment process model program, and the result of modeling was verified with operating lab-scale DNR process. As a result, if the sludge blanket keeps stable in the secondary settling tank, the effluent quality is similar in spite of different SVI values. And in case of the good sludge settleability, short HRT or long SRT increased the biomass concentration in the bioreactor, and improved the pollutant removal efficiency. In spite of daily influent changing, the good sludge settleability also guaranteed the stable effluent quality. And the results of the lab-scale DNR process experiment could support the simulated results.

  • With industrial development, the inevitable increase in both organic and inorganic waste necessitates the exploration of waste treatment and utilization methods. This study focuses on co-pyrolyzing lignin and red mud to generate metalbiochar, aiming to demonstrate their potential as effective adsorbents for water pollutant removal. Thermogravimetric analysis revealed mass loss of lignin below 660℃, with additional mass loss occurring (>660℃) due to the phase change of metals (i.e., Fe) in red mud. Characterization of the metal-biochar indicated porous structure embedded with zero-valent iron/magnetite and specific functional groups. The adsorption experiments with 2,4-dichlorophenol and Cd(II) revealed the removal efficiency of the two pollutants reached its maximum at the initial pH of 2.8. These findings suggest that copyrolysis of lignin and red mud can transform waste into valuable materials, serving as effective adsorbents for diverse water pollutants.

실내오염물질 제거용 광촉매의 제조조건에 따른 반응활성 연구 (Production Conditions of the Photo-catalyst for Removing Indoor Pollutants)

  • 본 연구에서는 UV 광을 이용하여 CO, C2H5OH 및 H2S에 해당하는 오염물질을 제어하기 위한 광촉매 연구를 수행하였다. 제조된 촉매들이 동일한 체적 및 표면적의 경우에는 촉매 구조 내부까지 UV 광이 조사될 수 있는 구조에서 우수한 반응활성을 보였다. 하지만 이러한 광촉매 TiO2의 CO에 대한 반응활성은 매우 저조하였으며, 이는 귀금속 계열의 Pt를 첨가하여 환원공정을 수행함으로써 해결할 수 있다. 특히 이러한 Pt/TiO2 광촉매는 환원공정을 통하여 표면 Pt0의 종의 생성 및 증가시킬 수 있으며, 이를 통해 CO의 반응활성이 우수해 짐을 확인하였다.

복합대기오염 저감 시스템을 위한 오존 고속산화 기반 고도산화공정 (An Ozone-based Advanced Oxidation Process for an Integrated Air Pollution Control System)

  • 미세먼지와 함께 질소산화물, 황산화물, 휘발성 유기화합물, 암모니아 비롯한 유발물질에 대한 동시 저감기술은 엄격해지는 환경규제와 실질적인 저감효과 제고를 위해 꾸준히 주목받아 왔다. 오존산화에 의한 비수용성 질소산화물 고속산화 공정은 전통적으로 적용되고 있는 선택적 촉매환원 공정에 비해 공간절약형 시스템 적용을 가능하게 할 뿐만 아니라 운영비용 절감 측면에서 매우 효과적인 방법으로 평가되고 있으며 황산화물을 비롯한 산성가스와 동시 저감이 가능한 공정 구현이 가능하다는 장점까지 있다. 본 논문에서는 오존 고속산화 공정에 대한 기술 이슈 및 개발 동향을 소개하며 향후 산업적 이용 확대를 위한 개발 방향에 대해서 고찰하고자 한다.

하천 수질정화를 위한 실험실 규모 다단식 토양여과 시스템에서 오염물질 제거에 미치는 운전인자의 영향 (Effects of Operation Parameters on Pollutants Removal in a Lab-Scale Multi-Layered Soil Filtration System)

  • 본 연구에서는 하천의 수질오염물질을 처리하는 다단식 토양여과 시스템의 주요 운전인자인 여재 충전깊이, 선속도 및 연속 또는 간헐운전이 오염물질의 제거에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 여재 충전깊이의 증가는 오염물질과 여재와의 접촉시간을 증가시켜 모든 항목의 제거효율을 증가시키는 역할을 하였다. 특히 물리화학적 제거에 기인하는 TP와 $NH_4$-N 항목의 제거효율이 상부의 생물학적 활성층에서의 제거에만 주로 기인하는 COD에 비하여 더 큰 증가를 보였다. 한편 선속도의 증가는 여재 내에서의 체류시간을 감소시키는 역할을 함에 따라 전반적인 제거효율의 저하를 가져왔으며, 특히 전체 여재층에 걸친 접촉시간에 영향을 받는 TP와 $NH_4$-N 항목에 비하여 표층부의 생물학적 제거에만 기인하는 COD의 경우는 상대적으로 큰 영향을 받는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 오염물질의 효율적인 제거를 위해서는 체류시간을 증가시키는 방향으로 운전인자들을 조절하는 것이 중요할 것으로 판단된다. 연속운전과 간헐운전으로 운전방법을 달리하는 것은 모든 항목에서 큰 영향을 미치지는 않았으나, 안정적 운전을 위해서는 생물학적 조건의 유지와 막힘 현상의 가속화 등을 고려할 필요가 있다.
