  • Polishing process has been applied to get extremely fine surfaces, e.g., mirror surfaces such as optical mirrors, lens, molds and etc. Nowadays not only fine surface quality but also submicron order of dimensional accuracy is required for many applications. To meet the requirements polishing process should be provided with an active control of polishing pressure especially for automation of polishing process. In this paper a study on development of an active polishing pressure control system has been presented. A new type of tool assembly has been developed to facilitate the control. The tool is attached to an axis of a polishing machine with a coil spring and control of the polishing pressure is done by the position control of the axis, which needs no additional actuator. The polishing pressure is successfully measured by the measurement of the spring deformation. Control specifications were quantitatively considered by weighting functions and a controller was designed by using loop-shaping technique based on the no synthesis. Some experiments have been executed on a polishing machine with a PC-NC controller. It is shown that the results were coincident well with the theoretical analyses and satisfied the design specifications.

  • This paper presents a method of grinding and polishing automation of precision die after CNC machining. The method employs a robot system equipped with a pneumatic spindle and a special abrasive film pad. The robote program is automatically generated off-line from a PC and downloaded to robot controller. Position and orientation data for the program is supplied from cutter contact (CC) data of NC machining process. This eliminates separate robot teaching process. This paper aims at practical automation of die finishing process which is very time consuming and suffering from shortage of workpeople. Time loss for changeover from one product to next is eliminated by off-line programming exploiting appropriate NC machining data. Dextrous 6-axis robot with rigid wrist and simple tooling enables the process applicable to larger, rather complex 3 dimensional free surfaces

  • The machining technology for the removal of micro-burr has been demanded because electrode parts of electron gun have minute holes. In this study, Magnetic Assisted Polishing(MAP) is applied to remove the micro-burr instead of the contentional polishing process such as the etching and barrel. Optimal polishing conditions are selected from many experiments using the tool of the flat end slit type. On the basis of experimental results, the deburring machine for the Magnetic Assisted Polishing of electrode part is developed and its performance is evaluated.

  • There are many difficulties in automatic polishing for die & mold surfaces. Even though the process has been studied in the past 15 years, it has not been achieved yet, but by the process of actual hand work of well-skilled workers. A new magentic assisted polishing process, which is one of the potential methods for automation of surface finishing has been studied in the past 10 years by colleagues. The process has many merits, but on the other hand also has demerits, one being low efficiency of grindability by comparision with wheel polish. Therefore, some attempts were tried to improve the grindability by adopting electropolishing, ultra-high speed milling, 5-axis controlled machine etc... most recently by colleagues. This paper also aims to improve the efficiency of polishing by introducing the easily-polished shape surface cutting method equalizing the tool feed per revolution to the pick feed. This cutting method was experimentally confirmed to have sufficient grindability to polish milled surface (with $10{{\mu}m}$Rmax surface roughness) into mirror surface (with $0.4{{\mu}m}$Rmax surface roughness).

  • As the consumer market in the mold, automation and aerospace industries grows, the demand for chemical machining using on electrochemical polishing increases. To enhance the surface roughness and gloss of the micro-needle, we have studied for an electrochemical polishing. Electrochemical polishing requires the chemical reaction of solution and material according to the electrolyte and electrode. In this study, sulfuric acid(30%), phosphoric acid(50%), and DI-water(20%)were used as the electrolytic solution, and the electrolytic solution temperature used $58^{\circ}C$. Electrochemical polishing was carried out in experimental conditions, and the micro-needle experiment was carried out from the basic experiment to obtain the experimental conditions. Experimental results show that as the voltage and current increase, the surface roughness improved and the gloss is improved. So, the best result for this experiment was obtained in condition 6, which improved micro-needle.

  • In order to improve the grindability of magnetic abrasive, Fe-WC magnetic abrasives were made by a plasma melting method after ball milling at various times. This study aims to investigate homogeneously distributed hard phases in Fe matrix and strong bonding between the Fe-matrix and the hard phase. According to XRD, SEM and OM observation, Fe-WC magnetic abrasive powders exhibit the best grindability by plasma melting for 30h ball milling. As a result of magnetic abrasive polishing, the surface roughness, R_{max}$ 5.0$\mu\textrm{m}$, before magnetic abrasive polishing, was reduced to R_{max}$ 2.4$\mu\textrm{m}$. The new magnetic abrasive polishing process is thought to be the useful methods for the automation of three dimensional surface polishing.

  • A position control method for interpolating aspherical grinding and polishing tool path was reviewed and experimented in a nano precision machine. The position-base algorithm was reformed from the time-base algorithm, proposed in the previous study. The characteristics of the algorithm were in the velocity control loop with position feedback. The aspherical surface was divided by an interval at which each velocity and acceleration were calculated. The theoretical velocity was corrected by position error during processing. In the experiment, a machine was constructed and nano-scale linear encoders were installed at each axis. Relation between process parameters and the variation of position error was monitored and discussed. The best result from optimized parameters showed that the accuracy was 150nm and improved from the previous report.

  • This paper describes a new surface finishing process which uses magnetic abrasive polishing. This is applied to automatic finishing of die & mold surface. Nowadays, most of die & mold meanufaturing procedures have been automated by the introduction of NC machine tool and CAD/CAM system. But the surface finishing of die & mold must be done by hand work of well-skilled workers. Though many attempts were tried in the past 15 years to eliminate this hand work, the automatic finishing of die & mold surface with 3D curvature has not been achieved yet. New magnetic abrasive finishing process is thought as one of the possible methods for the automation of 3D surface finishing. In order to improve the grindability of the method, ultra-high speed and 5-axis machining was introduce. The magnetic abrasive polishing which has adopted these methods was confirmend to improve the efficiencyof die & mold surface finishing.
