  • In this paper, we introduce a noise reduction method using polarizers in a wireless optical interconnections. If we use polarizers in a differential detector, the noise reduction capability is improved. In a case that two optical signal beams of similar wavelength are overlapped in space and crosstalk is a serious problems, we can detect each channel separately without crosstalk using two orthogonal polarizers. This method is very simple and easy to use.

  • Characteristics of reflective LCDs, which have gained a lot of notice in recent years, rely largely on optical design of circular polarizers and the quarter-wave plates, as a component. Important design includes wavelength dispersion, viewing angle, uniformity of display and matching of refractive index. Our work has contributed to improving performance of reflective LCDs by enhancing the characteristics of polymer film using stretching and optical lamination technologies. To design that offers higher contrast and wider viewing angle, we have discovered that it is necessary to control viewing angle variation of the polarizing axis in order to compensate for the viewing angle of the polarizing film as well as the optical anisotropic properties of liquid crystal. Applying this technology to circular polarizers used for reflective LCDs enables design of wide viewing angle circular polarizers. In order to realize higher contrast for reflective LCDs, it is also necessary to design other optical materials including polarizing films. For design of hybrid optical film, it is particularly necessary to reduce surface reflection and interface reflection. This paper also reports our findings concerning this topic.

  • Polarizers with high polarizing efficiency and other advanced optical films based on Lyotropic Dichroic Dyes have been developed for LCD and other applications. The developed optical films reveal both rod-like chromophores structure in a case of positive, or O-films and disc-like one for negative, or E-film.

  • In this paper, we reduced the optical noise interference using polarizers in a visible light communication system. In a transmitter, two light-emitting diodes(LEDs) are modulated synchronously by the original and the reversed signals of the transmitted data, and the two LED lights are radiated through orthogonal polarizers. In a receiver, two optical signals are detected through orthogonal polarizers and differentially amplified to remove the optical noise. In an environment that noise light from a fluorescent lamp is much stronger than the signal, the receiver with orthogonal polarizers removed the 120 Hz noise, and synchronous light transmission of the original and the reversed signals using two LEDs reduced the illumination flickering to about one-eighth that using one LED.

  • Integrated-optic polarization controlling devices such as polarizers, polarization splitters, and polarization converters, are proposed and demonstrated in nonlinear optic polymers. Poling-induced birefringence in electro-optic polymers is exploited to fabricate the devices. The polymeric waveguide polarizers show low excess losses, and extinction ratios of 20.7 dB and 17.1 dB for TM-pass and TE-pass polarizers, respectively. The polymeric waveguide polarization splitters exhibit TE-TM mode splittings with crosstalk of 14.2 dB and 10.1 dB for TM and TE mode splittings, respectively. The polymeric waveguide polarization converters show successful TE/TM polarization mode conversion with conversion efficiencies of higher than 30 dB. The device employs poling-induced waveguides which have slowly rotating azimuth angle of optic axis along the light propagation direction. The novel polarization converter is insensitive to wavelength and easier to fabricate than the other polarization converters containing periodic structures.

  • The polarizer is an important optical element used in a variety of applications. Nano-wire grid polarizers in the form of sub-wavelength metallic gratings are an attractive alternative to conventional polarizers, because they provide high extinction ratio. This study has been carried out to fabrication of the 17inch area size nano-wire grid polarizer(NWGP) The master for NWGPs with a pitch of 200nm and the area size $730mm{\times}450mm$ were fabricated using laser interference lithography and aluminum sputtering and wet etching. And The NWGP fabrication process was using by the Roll to-Roll UV imprinting and was applied to flexible PET film. The results were a transmission of light (Tp) 46.7%, reflectance (Rs) 40.1% and Extinction ratio of above 16 for the visible light range.

  • Methods of calculation of polarizers and splitters for visible spectra based on a multi-layer dielectric system are considered. Practical formulas for calculation are given. For example the cases of a splitter calculation when R$\_$s/ > 70% and R$\_$p/$\leq$ 30% or R$\_$s/=R$\_$p/ were considered. The formulas of the effective layers method are of practical use. The optical characteristics of calculated and fabricated polarizers and splitters for 650nm and 780nm wavelengths are presented.

  • In this work, we propose a new optical configuration for a 3-stack color LCD using subtract color mixing method. This configuration consists of 3 color polarizers, a neutral polarizer and 3 LC cells. With the proposed configuration, we can increase the contrast ratio practically by using a neutral polarizer and reduce the manufacturing cost. To reduce wavelength dispersion, the sequence of polarizers is optimized.

  • Gamma curve is one of the most important optical performance characteristics of a liquid crystal display. we present investigations on the relationship between gamma and polarizer. The gamma curve is affected by the angle of the polarizer absorption axis. When the crossed angle between the two polarizers turns larger, gamma values will decrease. The gamma variation caused from each polarizer variation could be improved by monitoring and controlling the axial direction of the polarizers.
