Fair bandwidth allocation (FBA) has been studied in optical burst switching (OBS) networks, with the main idea being to map the max-min fairness in traditional IP networks to the fair-loss probability in OBS networks. This approach has proven to be fair in terms of the bandwidth allocation for differential connections, but the use of the ErlangB formula to calculate the theoretical loss probability has made this approach applicable only to Poisson flows. Furthermore, it is necessary to have a reasonable fairness measure to evaluate FBA models. This article proposes an approach involving throughput-based-FBA, called TFBA, and recommends a new fairness measure that is based on the ratio of the actual throughput to the allocated bandwidth. An analytical model for the performance of the output link with TFBA is also proposed.

Vessel traffic servies (VTS) control movements in ports and coastal areas 24 hours a day using VHF. Thus, we were able to check ship movements and the patterns followed by VTS officers in VTS areas using VHF communication analysis. This study is intended to identify control intervals for dangerous situations and provide VTS officers with basic data and guidelines to prevent these occurrences in advance. We listened to Busan port's VHF communication for seven days and obtained risk values using the Park model with reference to controlled ships. The probability of a dangerous situation arising under a controller's watch per unit of time was confirmed to follow a Poisson distribution. As a result, for each 3.50 hours that VTS directly controls an area, (and in daytime for each 2.85 hours) a ship communicates in a VTS area every 3.84 hours, and some of there communications exceed certain risk values in VTS areas.

We ivestigate a two-stage queueing system which frequently arises in the study of overflow problems. A primary service facility consists of multiple primary queues where blocked calls are overflowed to a secondary queue. By approximating the input to the secondary queue with a two-state Markov Modulated Poisson Process (MMPP), we derive the blocking probability of the secondary queue. For the approximation, we employ the well-known Heffes' method and the SAM procedure.
As a certain job is repeatedly done by a worker, the outcome comparative to the effort to complete the job gets more remarkable. The outcome may be the time required and fraction defective. This phenomenon is referred to a learning-curve effect. We focus on the parametric modeling of the learning-curve effects on count data using a logistic cumulative distribution function and some probability mass functions such as a Poisson and negative binomial. We conduct various simulation scenarios to clarify the characteristics of the proposed model. We also consider a real application to compare the two discrete-type distribution functions.

Lee[15] examined quantity discount contracts between a manufacturer and a retailer in a stochastic, two-period inventory model where quantity discounts are provided based on the previous order size. During the two periods, the retailer faces stochastic (truncated Poisson distributed) demands and he/she places orders to meet the demands. The manufacturer provides for the retailer a price discount for the second period order if its quantity exceeds the first period order quantity. In this paper we extend the above two-period model to a k-period one (where k < 2) and propose a stochastic nonlinear mixed binary integer program for it. In order to make the program tractable, the nonlinear term involving the sum of truncated Poisson cumulative probability function values over a certain range of demand is approximated by an i-interval piecewise linear function. With the value of i selected and fixed, the piecewise linear function is determined using an evolutionary algorithm where its fitness to the original nonlinear term is maximized. The resulting piecewise linear mixed binary integer program is then transformed to a mixed binary integer linear program. With the k-period model developed, we suggest a solution procedure of receding horizon control style to solve n-period (n < k) order decision problems. We implement Lee's two-period model and the proposed k-period model for the use in receding horizon control style to solve n-period order decision problems, and compare between the two models in terms of the pattern of order quantities and the total profits. Our computational study shows that the proposed model is superior to the two-period model with respect to the total profits, and that order quantities from the proposed model have higher fluctuations over periods.
In this paper we consider a local area network (LAN) of dual mode service where one is a token bus and the other is a carrier sense multiple access with a collision detection (CSMA/CD) bus. The objective of the paper is to find the overall cell/packet dropping probability of a dual mode LAN for finite length queue M/G/1(m) traffic. Here, the offered traffic of the LAN is taken to be the equivalent carried traffic of a one-millisecond delay. The concept of a tabular solution for two-dimensional Poisson's traffic of circuit switching is adapted here to find the cell dropping probability of the dual mode packet service. Although the work is done for the traffic of similar bandwidth, it can be extended for the case of a dissimilar bandwidth of a circuit switched network.
To assess the risk of V. parahaemolyticus infection caused by consumption of raw oysters in Korea, contamination levels during the retail-to-table route of oysters was modeled to predict V. parahaemolyticus growth based on temperature and time. The consumed amount data of the KNHANES and the standard recipe of RDA were applied. A consumption scenario for exposure assessment was developed and combined with a Beta-Poisson dose-response model. The estimated probability of illness from consumption of pathogenic V. parahaemolyticus in raw oysters during three separate months (April, October, and November) was $5.71{\times}10^{-5}$ (within the 5th and 95th percentile ranges of $2.71{\times}10^{-8}$ to $1.03{\times}10^{-4}$). The results of the quantitative microbial-risk assessment indicated that the major factors affecting the probability of illness were the initial contamination level at the retailer, the consumed amount, the prevalence of pathogenic strains [tdh or trh genes], and exposure temperature and time.

A stochastic model for an inventory system in which depletion of stock takes place due to random demand as well as random loss of items is studied under the assumption that the intervals between cussessive unit demands as well as those between cussessive unit losses, are independently and identically distributed random variables having negative exponential distributions with respective parameters .mu. and .lambda. It is further assumed that leadtime for each order is an outstanding-order-dependent random variable. The steady state probability distribution of the net inventory level is derived under the continuous review (S -1, S) inventory policy, from which the total expected coast expression is formulated.

In this paper, we proposed the mechanism for the buffer allocation and a cell scheduling method with logical separation a single buffer in the ATm switch, and analyzed the cell loss probability and the delay of each trafic (CBR/VBR/ABR) based on the weighted value and the dynamic cell service scheduling algorithm. The proposed switch buffering system classifies composite trafics incoming to the switch, according to the characteristic of traffic, then stores them in the logically separated buffers, and adopts the round-robin service with weighted value in order to transmit cells in buffers though one output port. We analyzed 4 cell service scheduling algorithms with dynamic round-robinfor each logically separated service line of a single buffer, in which buffers have the respective weighted values and 3 classes on mixed traffic which characteristized by traffic descriptor. In simulation, using SIMCRIPT II.5., we model the VBR and the ABR traffics as ON/OFF processes, and the CBR traffic as a Poisson processes. As the results of analysis according to the proposed buffer management mechanism and cell service algorithm, we have found that the required QoS of each VC can be quaranteed depends on a scale of weighted values allocated to buffers that changed the weighted values, and cell scheduling algorithm.

A probabilistic assessment code, PRO-LOCA ver. 3.7 which was developed in an international co-operative research program, PARTRIDGE was evaluated by conducting sensitivity analysis. The effect of some variables such as simulation methods (adaptive sampling, iteration numbers, weld residual stress model), crack features(Poisson's arrival rate, maximum numbers of cracks, initial flaw size, fabrication flaws), operating and loading conditions(temperature, primary bending stress, earthquake strength and frequency), and inspection model(inspection intervals, detectable leak rate) on the failure probabilities of a surge line nozzle was investigated. The results of sensitivity analysis shows the remaining problems of the PRO-LOCA code such as the instability of adaptive sampling and unexpected trend of failure probabilities at an early stage.
