  • The paper proposes a sensorless speed control strategy for a PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) based on a new SMO (Sliding Mode Observer), which substitutes a signum function with a sigmoid function. To apply robust sensorless control of PMSM against parameter fluctuations and disturbance, the high speed SMO is proposed, which estimates the rotor position and angular velocity from the back EMF. The low-pass filter and additional position compensation of the rotor are used to reduce the chattering problem commonly found in sliding mode observer with signum function, which becomes possible by applying the sigmoid function with the control of a switching function. Also the proposed sliding mode observer with the sigmoid function has better efficiency than the conventional sliding mode observer since it adjusts the observer gain by variable boundary layer and estimates the stator resistance. The stability of the proposed sliding mode observer is verified by the Lyapunov second method in determining the observer gain. The validity of the proposed high speed PMSM sensorless velocity control has been demonstrated by real experiments.

  • This paper suggests the sensor-less speed control of PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) without the position sensor of oil-free air compressor. It estimated d and q axis back electro motive force using Back-EMF (Electro motive Force) observer to control sensor-less speed of PMSM. Also it used the method that tracks the information of rotor position and speed using PLL (Phase Locked Loop) based on estimated d and q axis Back-EMF. The sensor-less speed control of PMSM for oil air compressor application is carried out with the introduced rotor position and speed tracking method. In this paper, the experimental characterization of the sensor-less drive is provided to verify the accuracy of the estimated position and the performance of sensor-less control is analyzed by results obtained from the experiment. Moreover, the potential of PMSM sensor-less drive in industrial application such as compressor drive is also examined.

  • A new control method for precision robust position control of a PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) using asymptotically stable adaptive load torque observer is presented in the paper. Precision position control is obtained for the PMSM system approximately linearized using the field-orientation method. Recently, many of these drive systems use the PMSM to avoid backlashes. However, the disadvantages of the motor are high cost and complex control because of nonlinear characteristics. Also, the load torque disturbance directly affects the motor shaft. The application of the load torque observer is published in [1] using fixed gain. However, the motor flux linkage is not exactly known for a load torque observer. There is the problem of uncertainty to obtain very high precision position control. Therefore, a model reference adaptive observer is considered to overcome the problem of unknown parameter and torque disturbance in this paper. The system stability analysis is carried out using Lyapunov stability theorem. As a result, asymptotically stable observer gain can be obtained without affecting the overall system response. The load disturbance detected by the asymptotically stable adaptive observer is compensated by feedforwarding the equivalent current which gives fast response. The experimental results are presented in the paper using DSP TMS320c31.

  • In this paper, an intelligent sliding-mode position controller (ISMC) for achieving favorable decoupling control and high precision position tracking performance of permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) servo drives is proposed. The intelligent position controller consists of a sliding-mode position controller (SMC) in the position feed-back loop in addition to an on-line trained fuzzy-neural-network model-following controller (FNNMFC) in the feedforward loop. The intelligent position controller combines the merits of the SMC with robust characteristics and the FNNMFC with on-line learning ability for periodic command tracking of a PMSM servo drive. The theoretical analyses of the sliding-mode position controller are described with a second order switching surface (PID) which is insensitive to parameter uncertainties and external load disturbances. To realize high dynamic performance in disturbance rejection and tracking characteristics, an on-line trained FNNMFC is proposed. The connective weights and membership functions of the FNNMFC are trained on-line according to the model-following error between the outputs of the reference model and the PMSM servo drive system. The FNNMFC generates an adaptive control signal which is added to the SMC output to attain robust model-following characteristics under different operating conditions regardless of parameter uncertainties and load disturbances. A computer simulation is developed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed intelligent sliding mode position controller. The results confirm that the proposed ISMC grants robust performance and precise response to the reference model regardless of load disturbances and PMSM parameter uncertainties.

  • Because of the shortcomings of the PID controllers and traditional drive systems of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), a PMSM passivity-based control (PBC) drive system based on a quasi-Z source matrix converter (QZMC) is proposed in this paper. The traditional matrix converter is a buck converter with a maximum voltage transmission ratio of only 0.866, which limits the performance of the driven motor. Therefore, in this paper a quasi-Z source circuit is added to the input side of the two-stage matrix converter (TSMC) and its working principle has also been verified. In addition, the controller of the speed loop and current loop in the conventional vector control of a PMSM is a PID controller. The PID controller has the problem since its parameters are difficult to adjust and its anti-interference capability is limited. As a result, a port controlled dissipative Hamiltonian model (PCHD) of a PMSM is established. Thereafter a passivity-based controller based on the interconnection and damping assignment (IDA) of a QZMC-PMSM is designed, and the stability of the equilibrium point is theoretically verified. Simulation and experimental results show that the designed PBC control system of a PMSM based on a QZMC can make the PMSM run stably at the rated speed. In addition, the system has strong robustness, as well as good dynamic and static performances.

  • With increase of servo motor in industrial and home application, a number of papers related to PMSM control have been researched. Among them, sensorless control schemes are especially concerned in a view point of their cost reduction. In a conventional approach, a rotor position is generally estimated by the integration of estimated rotor speed. In this method, because of their tight relationship between the amplitude of back-emf and rotor position, it is somewhat difficult to find two parameters at the same time. To solve this problem, a novel sensorless control scheme is proposed. It utilizes a back-emf normalization, so that it does not require the variables related with the amplitude of back-emf. The validity of the proposed control scheme is verified through experimental results.

  • A pulse width modulation-voltage source inverter (PWM-VSI) is used for variable speed permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. The PWM-VSI fed PMSM has two major disadvantages. Firstly, the PWM-VSI DC-link voltage limits the magnitude of the PMSM terminal voltage. As a result, the motor speed is restricted. Secondly, in a low speed range, the PWM-VSI modulation index declines. This is caused by a high DC-link voltage and a low terminal voltage ratio. As a result, the distortion of the voltage command and the stator current are increased. This paper proposes an optimal pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) control which can adjust the inverter DC-link voltage by using a buck-boost DC-DC converter. At a low speed range, the proposed system can reduce the distortion of the voltage command, which improves the stator current waveform. Also, the allowable speed range is extended. In order to verify the proposed method, experimental results are provided to confirm the simulation results.

  • This paper shows the design and control methods of the bidirectional DC-DC converter to generate the proper DC-link voltage of a PMSM drive. Conventionally, because the controllable power of the PWM based voltage source inverter is limited by its DC-link voltage, the DC-DC converter is used for boosted DC-link voltage if the inverter source cannot generate enough operating voltage for the PMSM drive. In this paper, to obtain more utilization of this DC-DC converter, optimal DC-link voltage control for PMSM drive will be explained. First, the process and current path of the DC-DC converter will be illustrated, and a control method of this converter for variable DC-link voltage will then be explained. Finally, an improvement analysis of the optimal DC-link voltage control method, especially on the deadtime effect, will be explained. The DC-DC converter of the proposed control method is verified by the experiments by comparing with the conventional constant voltage control method.

  • PMSM(permanent magnet synchronous motor) are widely used in industrial and home appliance because of their high torque to inertia ratio, superior power density, and high efficiency For the high control performance, accurate information of rotor position Is essential. In recent, sensorless algorithms are much studied due to high cost problem of position sensor and low reliability in harsh environment. In the proposed method, a differential linkage flux is used for the estimation of rotor position. The differential magnetic field flux is calculated by the voltage equations and measured phase current without any integration and differential calculus. Instead of linkage flux calculation with differential operation, a new mathematical differential method is introduced by a-$\beta$ transformation. The proposed novel position sensorless speed control scheme is verified through experimental results.
