  • Platinum (Pt) has been commonly used as a counter electrode material in dye-sensitized solar cells, because it has high catalytic activity and electric conductivity as well as chemical inertness with iodide electrolyte. However, Pt is too expensive to be commercialized. Therefore, in the present study, carbon black counter electrode with Pt and carbon nano tube (CNT) was investigated. The power conversion efficiency with Pt added carbon black electrode was lower than hat of pure Pt electrode which was 6.47 %. By adding 3 wt% Pt to the carbon black counter electrode, the power conversion efficiency was maximized at 5.88 %. On them, additional adding of 1 wt % CNT, the power conversion efficiency (${\eta}$)wasincreasedupto6.21%. The reason of power conversion efficiency improvement with a proper amount of Pt and CNT was examined by comparing the impedance properties measured using EIS.

  • To raise the utilization of precious platinum currently used as catalyst for PAFC's electrode, it is very important to make fine particles of platinum. This study, for preparing highly dispersed platinum catalyst on carbon black, method. And then loading yield of platinum catalyst on carbon black and the particle size were investigated by DCP and XRD and/or TEM respectively. The colloid method by which platinum particle size could be reduced as small as below $30{\AA}$ showed the best result among them, and the loading yield of platinum catalyst on carbon black was above 99%.

  • When platinum wan impregnated on carbon by methanol, surfactant have an important effect on the stability of platinum colloid. As the increase of amounts of surfactant enhanced the stability of platinum colloid, the particle size of platinum on carbon was diminished. But, after heat treatment, residue of surfactant remained in electrode to decrease current density of oxygen reduction. To remove surfactant, as temperature of heat treatment enhanced, platinum particle was aggromerated and current density was decreased.

  • Improvement of the selectivity of nonenzymatic glucose based on mesoporous platinum ($H_1$-ePt) by using A.C. impedance is reported. The idea of the present work is based on the novel effect of the mesoporous electrode that the apparent exchange current due to glucose oxidation remarkably grows although the reaction kinetics on the surface is still sluggish. It is expected that the enlarged apparent exchange current on the mesoporous electrode can raise the sensitivity of admittance in A.C. impedance to glucose concentration. At a low frequency, A.C. impedance could become more powerful. The admittance at 0.01 Hz is even more sensitive to glucose than to ascorbic acid while amperometry exhibits the inverse order of sensitivity. This is the unique behavior that is neither observed by A.C. impedance on flat platinum electrode nor obtained by amperometry. The study shows how the combination of A.C. impedance and nano-structured surface can be applied to the detection of sluggish reaction such as electrochemical oxidation of glucose.

  • The plasma-deposited polymer thin films at platinum surface were investigated as materials blocking access of chloride ions to the platinum surface and preventing their interference with the Nernstian responce of platinum. In the presence of chloride ions, the pH response of a naked platinum was remarkably affected. By comparison of pH responses of coated and uncoated platinum-wire electrodes immersed in solutions with chloride ions, it was found that toluene and ethylbenzene plasma films could improve the pH response of platinum. The pH response of coated platinum electrodes may be explained by the ability of protons, by virtue of their small size, to move through the polymer matrix to the platinum surface.

  • The anodic reaction of hydrogen/oxygen gas mixture at platinum or palladium electrode interfacing with a solid polymer electrolyte was investigated using AC impedance method. The impedance spectrum of the electrode reactions of the mixture depends on the gas composition, electrode roughness, the mode of electrochemical operation and the cell potential. For electrolysis mode of operation, the spectrum taken for the reaction on a rough platinum electrode for the gas mixture revealed clearly that the local anodic reduction of oxygen gas takes place concurrently with the anodic oxidation of hydrogen gas.

  • The electrochemical detection of As(III) was investigated on a platinum-iron(III) nanoparticles modified multiwalled carbon nanotube on glassy carbon electrode(nanoPt-Fe(III)/MWCNT/GCE) in 0.1 M $H_2SO_4$. The nanoPt-Fe(III)/MWCNT/GCE was prepared via continuous potential cycling in the range from -0.8 to 0.7 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), in 0.1 M KCl solution containing 0.9 mM $K_2PtCl_6$ and 0.6 mM $FeCl_3$. The Pt nanoparticles and iron oxide were co-electrodeposited into the MWCNT-Nafion composite film on GCE. The resulting electrode was examined by cyclic voltammetry (CV), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). For the detection of As(III), the nanoPt-Fe(III)/MWCNT/GCE showed low detection limit of 10 nM (0.75 ppb) and high sensitivity of $4.76\;{\mu}A{\mu}M^{-1}$, while the World Health Organization's guideline value of arsenic for drinking water is 10 ppb. It is worth to note that the electrode presents no interference from copper ion, which is the most serious interfering species in arsenic detection.

  • In this paper, mesoporous only platinum electrode and micro pore platinum electrode with mesoporous Pt are fabricated and characterized on a silicon substrate to check their usability as enzymeless sensing electrodes for developing non-disposable glucose sensors integrated with silicon CMOS read out circuitry. Since most of electrochemical glucose sensors are disposable due to the use of the enzymes that are living creatures, these are limited to use in the in-vivo and continuous monitoring system applications. The proposed mesoporous Pt electrode with approximately 2.5nm in pore diameter and 150nm in height was fabricated by using a nonionic surfactant $C_{16}EO_8$ and an electroplating technique. The micro pore Pt electrode with mesoporous Pt means the mesoporous Pt electrode fabricated on top of micro pore arrayed Pt electrode with approximately $10{\mu}m$ in pore diameter and $80{\mu}m$ in height. The measured current responses at 10mM glucose solution of plane Pt, micro pore Pt, micro pore with mesoporus Pt, and mesoporous Pt electrodes are approximately $9.9nA/mm^2$, $92.4nA/mm^2$, $3320nA/mm^2$ and $44620nA/mm^2$, respectively. These data indicate that the mesoporous Pt electrode is much more sensitive than the other Pt electrodes. Thus, it is promising for non-disposable glucose sensor and electrochemical sensor applications.

  • This paper dealt with the manufacturing of binary alloy catalyst and showed simple electrochemical method for determing catalytic activity of oxygen reduction in acid or alkaline electrolyte. The catalyst was prepared by impregnating transition metal salts on platinum or silver particles adsorbed before on carbon paper substrate. The electrochemical characteristics of the catalysts was investigated with carbon paper electrode or PTFE-boned porous electrode and then cathodic current densities and tafel slopes were compared. As a result, of all binary catalysts utilized in this work, Pt-Fe, Pt-Mo showed better oxygen reduction activity than pure platinum catalyst in acid electrolyte and Ag-Fe, Ag-Pt, and Ag-Ni-Bi-Ti catalyst did than pure silver catalyst in alkaline electrolyte. The current density of Pt-Fe electrode in acid electrolyte was one and half times higher than that of Pt electrode(~500mA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at 0.7VvsNHE).
