  • Cellular and castellated steel beams are used to obtain higher stiffness and bending capacity using the same weight of steel. In addition, the beam openings may be used as a pass for different mechanical fixtures such as ducts and pipes. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of different parameters on both elastic and inelastic critical buckling stresses of steel web plates with openings. These parameters are plate aspect ratio; opening shape (circular or rectangular); end distance to the first opening; opening spacing; opening size; plate slenderness ratio; steel grade; and initial web imperfection. The web/flange interaction has been simplified by web edge restraints representing simply supported boundary conditions. A numerical parametric study has been performed through linear and nonlinear finite element (FE) models, where the FE results have been verified against both experimental and numerical results in the literature. The web plates are subject to in-plane linearly varying compression with different loading patterns, ranging from uniform compression to pure bending. A buckling stress modification factor (${\beta}$-factor) has been introduced as a ratio of buckling stress of web plate with openings to buckling stress of the corresponding solid web plate. The variation of ${\beta}$-factor against the aforementioned parameters has been reported. Furthermore, the critical plate slenderness ratio separating elastic buckling and yielding has been identified and discussed for two steel grades of DIN-17100, namely: ST-37/2 and ST-52/3. The FE results revealed that the minimum ${\beta}$-factor is 0.9 for web plates under uniform compression and 0.7 for those under both compression and tension.

  • The use of frequency-dependent dynamic stiffness matrix (or spectral element matrix) in structural dynamics may provide very accurate solutions, while it reduces the number of degrees-of-freedom to improve the computational efficiency and cost problems. Thus, this paper develops a spectral element model for the thin plates moving with constant speed under uniform in-plane tension and gravity. The concept of Kantorovich method and the principle of virtual displacement is used in the frequency-domain to formulate the dynamic stiffness matrix. The present spectral element model is evaluated by comparing its solutions with the exact analytical solutions. The effects of moving speed, in-plane tension and gravity on the natural frequencies of the plate are numerically investigated.

  • During the pipe forming process, a steel plate undergoes inelastic behavior multiple times under a load condition repeating tension and compression in the circumferential direction. It derives local reduction or increase of yield strength within the thickness of steel pipes by the plastic hardening and Bauschinger effect. In this study, a combined hardening model is proposed to effectively predict variations of yield strength in the circumferential direction of API-X65 and X70 steel pipes with relatively low t/D ratio during the forming process, which is expected to experience accumulated plastic strain of 2~3%, the typical Lüder band range in a low-carbon steel. Cyclic tensile tests of API-X65 and X70 steels were performed, and the parameters of the proposed model for the steels were calibrated using the test results. Bending-flattening tests to simulate repeated tension and compression during pipe forming were followed for API-X65 and X70 steels, and the results were compared with those by the proposed model and Zou et al. (2016), in order to verify the process of material model calibration based on tension-compression cyclic test, and the accuracy of the proposed model. Finally, parametric analysis for the yield strength of the steel plate in the circumferential direction of UOE pipe was conducted to investigate the effects of t/D and expansion ratios after O-forming on the yield strength. The results confirmed that the model by Zou et al. (2016) underestimated the yield strength of steel pipe with relatively low t/D ratio, and the parametric analysis showed that the t/D and expansion ratio have a significant impact on the strength of steel pipe.

  • The motion response of floating structures should be adequately low to permit the operation of rigid risers along with dry well heads. Though Spar platforms have low heave responses under lower sea state, could become unacceptable in near resonance region of wave periods. Hence the hydrodynamic response, heave in particular, must be examined to ensure that it is minimized. To reduce heave motions, external damping devices are introduced and one such effective damping device is heave plate. Addition of heave plate can provide additional viscous damping and additional added mass in the heave direction which influence the heave motion. The present study focuses on the influence of heave plate on the hydrodynamic responses of Classic Spar in regular waves. The experimental investigation has been carried out on a 1:100 scale model of Spar with single and double heave plates in regular waves. Numerical investigation has been carried out to derive the hydrodynamic responses using ANSYS AQWA. The experimental results were compared with those obtained from numerical simulation and found to be in good agreement. The influence of disk diameter ratio, wave steepness, pretension in the mooring line and relative spacing between the plates on the hydrodynamic responses of Spar are evaluated and presented.

  • A new analytical method for the prediction of the buckling behavior of laminated plates consisting of layers having different properties in tension and compression, so called bimodulus, is proposed in this paper. Buckling analysis of bimodular composite laminated paltes are performed with the results reduced from plate bending analysis. The governing equations of bimodular plates are based on the first shear deformation theory. As a case study, bending and buckling of simply supported, multilayered, symmetric, antisymmtric, and specially orthotropic laminates under uniformly distributed lateral load for bending analysis and in-plane load for buckling are considered. The results of the bending analysis are compared with the previous papers. Then, the fundamental critical buckling loads and buckling modes are calculated for the various bimodular composite rectangular thin plates.

  • In this paper, basic micro-mechanical properties of unidirectional CFRP composite shell such as bonding strength, fiber volume fraction and void fraction are measured and tensile strength test is performed with a fixture. And then fracture surfaces are observed by SEM. In case of basic micro-mechanical properties, bonding strength is reduce with decreasing of radius of each ply in a shell for the effect of residual stress, fiber volume fraction is smaller than plate, and void fraction is vise versa. For these reason, tensile strength of shell is smaller than plate fabricated with same prepreg. For failure mode shell has many splitted part along its length, and it is assumed that this phenomenon is caused by the difference of bonding strength for residual stress.

  • In this paper, sixteen column specimens were tested under the concentrated and excentric load condition to examine the structural behavior of strengthened columns. 16 column specimens were divided into four groups. One group is not strengthened, the other three groups are strengthened by the materials : 1) steel plate, 2) carbon fiber sheet, and 3) glass fiber sheet, each group is composed of four specimens. As a result, strengthened columns have larger bearing capacity and energy absorption after ultimate load than unstrengthened columns. The column group strengthened with steel plate has the best bearing capacity among the strengthened column groups. Also, the columns strengthened with the carbon fiber sheet are similar to glass fiber sheet in bearing capacity. If necessary to strengthen columns in trouble, car should be taken to treat the joint between beam and column because of crack propagation in tension side.

  • The SLIM AU composite beam consists of U-shaped steel plate, A-shaped steel cap and infilled concrete. The bottom steel plate acts as tension bars, and the top steel cap takes roles of shear connector and compression bars in the conventional reinforced concrete section. In this paper the shear strength of this composite beam with closed steel section has been evaluated through the concentrated loading shear experiments. Test results under the symmetrical and asymmetrical loading conditions were compared with the predicted values based on the KBC 2016. The composite beam showed the greater shear strength capacities than those of the theoretical evaluation.

  • In this paper, the residual stress and young's modulus of the p+ thin film have been estimated by using the electrostatic resonators. The electrostatic plate resonator with four corrugated bridges and another with four flat ones have been fabricated. The deflection of the plate has been calculated under the induced tension and the residual stress and compared with the dynamic test results. When the young's modulus of the p+ silicon is 125 GPa. The estimated residual stresses of the flat and the corrugated bridges are about 15 MPa and less than 5 MPa, respectively. It has been confirmed that the corrugated structure releases the residual tensile stress resulted from the heavy boron diffusion process.
