Effect of Polyolic Plasticizers on Rheological and Thermal Properties of Zein Resins

  • Zein protein is one of the best biopolymer for edible film making and polyols are convenient plasticizers for biopolymers. Sorbitol, glycerol and manitol at three levels (0.5, 0.7, 1g/g of zein) were used as plasticizers. Rheological and thermal properties of zein resins were studied for determining their plasticization effectiveness. Sorbitol and glycerol had good plasticizing effects and could decrease viscoelastic modulus of zein resins considerably, but manitol was not as effective as them. Effects of plasticizers on thermal properties of resins were investigated by DSC at -100 to $150^{\circ}C$. No crystallization and melting peaks related to zein resin and plasticizers were observed. Thermograms showed that polyolic plasticizers and zein resin remained a homogeneous material throughout the cooling and heating cycles.

  • Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) with $85{\mu}m$ polyacrylate fiber, coupled to gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to analyze the plasticizers contained in balloon samples. The balloons were identified to be made of polyisoprene by IR spectroscopy. The plasticizers extracted from the balloon samples soaked in acetone-added water solvent for an hour were quantified by external standard method using nine kinds of plasticizers. The quantification method was validated for standard plasticizers in the range of $0.25-25{\mu}g/g$. The detection limits were $0.11-0.38{\mu}g/g$ for different plasticizers. The RSDs for the reproducibility of this quantitation method were 3.7-14.2%. A few of balloons included risky level of plasticizer concerned as and endocrine disrupter, and it is necessary to regulate these products.

  • A method for the determination of basic drugs based on their reaction with picric acid to form an ion-association complex extractable into several plasticizers was developed. Ba sic drugs-picric acid complexes in acid medium could be extracted quantitatively into several plasticizers except phosphates. For example, the chlorpromazine-picric acid complex showed maximum absorbance at near 410nm and was applied to extraction spectrophotometric determination of chlorpromazine. The calibration curves are linear (r>0.998) within a range from $10^{-6}to\;5{\times}10^{-4}M$ and the precision of the method was acceptable because RSD was less than 2.6% (n=7). The factors affecting the extraction system was discussed.

Physical Properties of Silk Fibroin Films Treated with Various Plasticizers

  • Silk fibroin (SF) films were prepared using various plasticizers and their physical properties were determined. Polyethylene glycol (PEG)-SF and polypropylene glycol (PPG)-SF films had tensile strengths (TS) of 23.71 MPa and 24.51 MPa, respectively, whereas the glycerol (G)-SF film had the lowest TS of 14.24 MPa. G-SF film had the highest $\%$ elongation, compared to PPG-SF and PEG-SF films. Water vapor permeability (WVP) of SF films varied with addition of plasticizers, and PEG-SF film had the lowest WVP. There was no significant difference in Hunter L value among treatments, but PEG-SF film had higher Hunter a and b values. These results suggest that SF film could be applied to food packaging and that the addition of plasticizers should improve the physical properties of SF film.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the safety status of gasket of glass bottle being used for the Bulgogi sauce. The content of plasticizers in the gasket and their migrated amounts into Bulgogi sauce were determined. Among the plasticizers analyzed, only di-isodecyl phthalate (DIDP) was detected in the range between 30.6 and 35.9% from 6 samples. None of the plasticizers was detected in the sauce. Therefore, it can be concluded that the safety status of the gasket tested met the requirement of limit values as prescribed for the migration test of food packaging utensils, containers and packages of the Korea Food Code.

  • Plasticizers are chemical additives added to polymers to have a desirable effect on mechanical properties such as processability and ductility. In this paper, we explore the use and market of eco-friendly plasticizers that can replace phthalate-based plasticizers that have been traditionally used in the plastics market. Bio plasticizers are derived primarily from biomass sources, including agricultural products, by-products and wastes. Regardless of the source of biomass, an ideal eco-friendly plasticizer should be non-toxic, have high resistance to volatilization, extraction, and migration, have good compatibility and compatibility, and be economical. The global bio plasticizer market is expected to reach USD 2.1 billion by 2030 from USD 1.3 billion in 2020, growing at a CAGR of 5.31% from 2021 to 2030.

  • Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is considered as one of the most promising bio-based polymers due to its high strength, high modulus, good processability, transparency after processing, and commercial availability. This study aimed to investigate the mechanical, thermal, and migration properties of poly(lactic acid)/zeolite (10 phr) composites prepared with various biocompatible plasticizers, such as triethyl citrate(TEC), tributyl citrate(TBC), and poly(ethylene glycol)(PEG400), through differential scanning calorimetry(DSC), thermo-gravimetric analysis(TGA) and standard tensile testing. The incorporation of PEG400 significantly increased the elongation at break, and DSC results showed that the addition of plasticizers drastically decreased the Tg of PLA/zeolite composites and improved the melt flow and processability. Besides, it was found from TGA results that PLA/zeolites composites plasticized by TEC and TBC were more easily to be thermally degraded than the composites plasticized by PEG400.

  • Electrochemical characteristics and physical properties of polymer electrolyte which immobilized lithium salts such as $LiClO_4$ and $LiCF_3SO_3$ and plasticizers such as ethylene carbonate(EC) and propylene carbonate(PC) in high molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide)[PEO] polymer was investigated. PEO-Li based polymer electrolyte with plasticizers showed ionic conductivity of $10^{-4}S/cm$ at room temperature and high electrochemical stability up to 4.5 V(vs. $Li^+/Li$), so it can be applied to lithium secondary battery. The crystallinity of PEO decreased with the addition of lithium salts and plasticizers, especially $LiClO_4$ and PC showed more effective than and $LiCF_3SO_3$ and EC. Glass transition temperature($T_g$) of polymer electrolyte increased with increasing lithium salt concentration whereas melting temperature ($T_m$) decreased. Polymer electrolyte with plasticizers crystallized at $6^{\circ}C$.

  • Based on the Benzoflex (Vesicol Chemical Co.) as PVC plasticizer substituents for Di-n-octyl phthalate (DOP), a series of new aromatic carboxylic acid ester compounds were designed as plasticizers, synthesized, and screened for the endocrine disrupting activity. 2-Hydroxybenzoic acid (1) and 2-methoxybenzoic acid (2) as the commercially available starting materials were reacted with diethylene glycol (3) in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid using Dean-Stark column to give diethylene glycol di-(2-hydroxy)benzoate (4, KH01) and diethylene glycol di-(2-methoxy)benzoate (5, KH02), respectively. And diethylene glycol di-(3-pyridinyl) ester (7, KH03) and dipropylene glycol di-(3-pyridinyl) ester (9, KH04) were obtained in high yields by treatment of nicotinoyl chloride (6) with diethylene glycol (3) and dipropylene glycol (8) in the presence of triethylamine as a base. To determine the estrogenic disrupting effect of new synthetic phthalate analogues, E-screen assay method was used. Of these compounds, 4 (KH01) was found to be compound without endocrine disrupting effect.

A study on the development of phthalate plasticizers CRM in ABS resin (ABS 중 phthalates 가소제 CRM 개발에 대한 연구)

  • Phthalate plasticizers are regulated by RoHS, REACH and CPSC as hazardous substances. Responding to these international environmental restrictions, we developed ABS certified reference material (CRM) for determination of phthalate plasticizers such as DMP, DEP, DBP, BBP, DEHP and DnOP. The candidate material has been made with ABS resin widely used in electric and electronic products and 6 kinds of phthalate plasticizers. The making of the material involved a series of processes like extruding, cooling, pelletizing, and drying using twin screw extruder. Then it has been certified according to ISO Guide 35. Using isotope dilution-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (ID-GC/MS), homogeneity, short-term stability, and long-term stability were evaluated. The certified values were determined by using primary reference material (PRM) of KRISS for traceability. From now on, we will provide ABS CRM to national and international companies and research institutes after certification as certified reference material and registering on COMAR (code of reference material).
