  • Liquid ammonia treatment known as the most effective Wood plasticization method, was applied to two typical domestic species, Pinus densiflora, Castanea crenata. Small specimens of 30mm width, 300mm length and two thicknesses, 5 or 10mm, were used. For 5mm thick Specimens, Pinus densiflora was quite well plasticized iker 4 hour liquid ammonia treatment, while Castanea crenata was not plasticized even after 4 hour treatment. Specimens of 10mm thick Pinus densiflora were hardly plasticized, but those with kerfs were bent somewhat easily, With the increase of liquid ammonia treatment time the thermal conductivity of Pinus densiflora increased, while that of Castanea crenata didn't Presteaming before liquid ammonia treatment didn't improve the plasticization of both species.

  • In the gas separation process, the separation membranes have to not only show high gas transport and selectivity but also exhibit exceptional stability at high temperature and pressure. However, when the polymeric membranes (particularly, glassy polymers) are exposed to the condensable gases (i.e., CO2, H2S, hydrocarbon, etc.), the polymer chains are prone to swell, leading to low stability. As a result, the plasticization behavior reduces the gas selectivity in the separation of mixture gases at high pressures and thus results in limited applications to the separation processes. To address these issues, many strategies have been studied such as thermal treatment, polymer blending, thermally rearrangement, mixed-matrix membranes, cross-linking, etc. In this review, we will understand the plasticization behavior and suggest potential methods based on the previously reported studies.

  • The dynamic mechanical properties of the unclustered cesium neutralized poly(methyl methacrylate-co-methacrylic acid) ionomers plasticized with three different plasticizers of low molecular weight were investigated. It was found that the effectiveness of the plasticization followed the order: glycerol (Gly) 4-decylaniline (4DA) >dioctyl phthalate (DOP). For the ionomer plasticized with Gly, the only effect was a significant decrease in the Tg. Thus it is concluded that the polar plasticizer not only increases the mobility of the ionomer but also dissolves the ionic groups. In the case of the 4DA-plasticized ionomer, both a drastic decrease in the Tg and the appearance of a second glass transition were observed. Therefore, it is suggested that the nonpolar 4DA molecules partition evenly in the poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix and cluster phases via hydrogen bonding between the aniline group of the plasticizer and the carbonyl groups of the ionomer. As a result, the Tg is lowered, multiplets can form, and the material behaves like a clustered ionomer.

  • Polyvinyl acetate emulsion has been widely used as adhesives for wood and paper, paint additives and binders for fiber, leather, and other materials because it is an excellent adhesive with many advantages including low in toxicity risks and manufacturing cost. It is expected the consumption of polyvinyl acetate emulsion as adhesives will increase in cigarette industry as well as in paperboard coating industry. Recently the operation speed of the cigarette tip wrapper increased so substantially that improvement of the emulsion properties is required including good wet tack development, narrow and controlled particle size distribution, low viscosity, etc. In this study the effects of such polymerization conditions as the type and amount of emulsifier, internal or external plasticizing, and emulsification methods on the viscosity and particle size of polyvinyl acetate emulsions were examined. Results showed that polyvinyl alcohol with a high degree of hydrolysis and low molecular weight and nonionic surfactants are superior to anionic surfactant in improving adhesion and emulsion stability. They also tend to produce emulsions with smaller particle size. External plasticization with dipropylene glycol dibenzoate was more effective in improving flexibility than internal plasticization with butyl acrylate. Monomer emulsification under high shear was more effective in decreasing the particle size.

  • A cinnamate group is a well-known compound group used in the dimerization reaction by ultraviolet irradiation, and cinnamate polymers are studied as photoalignment materials. In this study, the radical reaction of cinnamate side groups attached to a flexible polymer backbone is considered feasible using thermal energy. To induce the thermal reaction of cinnamate side groups, we modified the flexibility of poly(vinyl cinnamate) by introducing a plasticizer into the polymers and investigated the thermal reaction behavior of cinnamate side groups. The plasticization of poly(vinyl cinnamate) makes the induction of the thermal reaction of cinnamate side groups easier than that of unmodified poly(vinyl cinnamate). The thermal reaction of cinnamate side groups is closely related to the enhancement of the thermal stability of the liquid crystal orientation of polymer films with polarized UV irradiation.

  • Steaming has been used for bending wood for a long time, but the steam-bent wood is subject to spring-back and a relatively large radius of curvature. Liquid ammonia is known as an excellent wood plasticizer swelling both crystal and amorphous cellulose. Liquid ammonia technique for wood plasticization was developed and applied for bending alder and padauk pieces, which were used as parts of wooden furniture. The study confirmed that liquid ammonia bent wood can be used for various wood working design.

  • Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes crosslinked with poly(acrylic acid-co-maleic anhydride) (PAM) as a polymeric crosslinking agent were prepared to investigate the pervaporation performance for the dehydration separation of aqueous ethanol solution. The characteristics of the resulting membranes crosslinked(x) were analysed by FT-IR and water swelling test. The water swelling decreased with increasing crosslinking agent content. The crosslinked PVA membranes with PAM showed lower water swelling than those of PVA membrane crosslinked with glutaraldehyde and modified PVA membrane. The swelling of water molecules in the crosslinked PVA membranes is more restricted by both chemical crosslinking between PVA and polymeric crosslinking agent chains and physical crosslinking by the entanglement between the PVA and polymeric crosslinking agent chains. For the pervaporation of aqueous ethanol solution through the crosslinked membrane, as the contents of crosslinking agent increased, the separation factor increased while the permeation flux decreased. The separation factor slightly decreased and permeation flux increased with increasing feed water content. As a result it could be considered that PVA-PAM membranes suppressed the plasticization effect even in the range of high water concentration in fled.

  • The origin of large difference of selectivity of $C_3H_6$ over $C_3H_8$ between pure gas and mixed gas through silver polymer electrolyte membranes is investigated. Firstly, the effect of feed condition on the permeance of mixture gas ($C_3H_6/C_3H^8$) and the separation performance is examined. Upon decrease of the $C_3\;H_6$ concentration, the $C_3H_6$ permeance decreased whereas the permeance of $C_3H_8$ increased, resulting in the decrease of the selectivity of $C_3H_6/C_3H_8/.$ This result is ascribed to the $C_3H_6$-induced plasticization of membranes. Experimental results were validated by means of mathematical modeling, where pressure independent permeabilities were used.
