  • For more effective temperature control of atmospheric plasma sprayed (APS) zirconia thermal barrier coating, understanding of the parameters, which influence the substrate temperature, is essential and also more numerical results based on the experimental data are required. This study aims to investigate the substrate temperature control during an APS process. The APS process deals with air-cooled systems, plasma-gas flow, powder feed rate, robot velocity, and substrate effect on the substrate surface temperature control during the process. This systematic approach will help to handle the temperature control, and thus lead to better coating quality.

  • Thermal spray coating is formed by a process in which melted particles flying with high speed towards substrate, then crash and spread on the substrate surface cooled and solidified in a very short time, Stacking of the particles makes coating. In this study, the exfoliation of $Al_2$O$_3$ and Ni-4.5wt.%Al thermally sprayed coating which were deposited by an atmospheric plasma spray apparatus are investigated using an AE method. A tensile test is conducted on notch specimens in a stress range below the elastic limit of substrate. The wave forms of AE generated from the three coating specimens can be classified by FFT analysis into two types which low frequency(type I waveform is considered to corresponds exfoliation of coating layers and type II waveform corresponds the plastic deformation of notch tip or the resultant fracture of coating. The fracture of the coating layers can estimate by AE event and amplitude, because AE features increase when the deformation generates.

  • Rare-earth zirconates, including lanthanum zirconate and gadolinium zirconate, have been investigated as ones of the most promising candidates for next-generation thermal barrier coating (TBC) materials due to their excellent properties such as low thermal conductivity, chemical stability at high temperature and so on. In this study, TBCs with three compositions, in the $La_2O_3-Gd_2O_3-ZrO_2$ system with reduced rare-earth contents from $RE_2Zr_2O_7$ compositions, were fabricated by using suspension plasma spray with different suspension preparation methods. The phase formation, microstructure, and thermal properties of TBCs were examined. In particular, each coating exhibited single fluorite phase and a dense, vertically-separated microstructure. The potential of coatings with rare-earth zirconates for TBC applications was also discussed.

  • An inert gas atomized NiTiZrSiSn bulk metallic glass feedstock was sprayed onto the copper plate using vacuum plasma spraying process. In order to change the in-flight particle energy, that is, thermal energy, the hydrogen gas flow rate in plasma gas mixture was increased at the constant flow rate of argon gas. Coating and single pass spraying bead were produced with the least feeding rate. Regardless of the plasma gas composition, fully melted through unmelted particle could be observed on the overlay coating. However, the frequency of the unmelted particle number density was increased with the decrease of the hydrogen gas flow rate. The amorphous phase fraction within coating was also affected by the number density of the unmelted particle.

  • Far infrared ceramic/aluminum composite powders for thermal spray were fabricated by spray drying method and investigated the characteristics of the plasma sprayed coating layers, I.e. microstructure, phases, thermal shock resistance and spectral emissivity. The shape of the spray dried composite powder was spherical and the particle size distribution was 34~105${\mu}m $. Aluminum was distributed homogeneously in the spray dried composite powder. Spectral emissivity of the plasma sprayed coating layer ranges from 3 to 14${\mu}m $ whereas spectral emissivity of the raw ceramic powder ranges from 8 to 14${\mu}m $. And then spectral emissivity of the coatings was better than that of the raw powder but spectral emissivity was decreased with increasing aluminum content. It was found that aluminum content ranging from 20 to 30wt% was suitable for fabricating far-infrared radiator by plasma spraying method.

  • In this study, bond strength tests were performed for the thermal barrier coating applied to the 1st stage turbine blade. After the tests, the specimens were cut and the locations of failure were observed by using optical microscope. The influence of heat treatment on bond strength of a bond coating and the difference among the three types of bond coatings are treated.

  • Experiments were conducted using SUS430 and Crofer 22 APU steels coated by LSM using plasma spray and slurry spray methods, respectively. High-temperature conductivity and oxidation resistance were investigated. For comparison, SUS430 and Crofer 22 APU without LSM coating were also investigated and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) was measured. The results show that the materials without LSM coating exhibit almost the same CTE as YSZ electrolyte in a range of temperatures of $550{\sim}850^{\circ}C$. When coated with LSM, the oxidation rate of the steels decreases by $30{\sim}40%$ using slurry spray and by $10{\sim}30%$ using plasma spray whereas the steels using plasma spray have a better high-temperature conductivity than the steels using slurry spray. It is thus concluded that the LSM coating has a limited effect on increasing high-temperature conductivity while it can effectively reduce the oxidation of the steels.

  • This paper is to investigate the wear behaviors of two type ceramics, $Al_{2}O_{3}\;and\;TiO_{2}$, by coated plasma thermal spray method under the lubricative environment. The lubricative environments are grease fluids, a general hydraulic fluids, and bearing fluids. The wear testing machine used a pin on disk type. Wear characteristics, which were friction force, friction coefficient and the specific wear rate, according to the lubricative environments were obtained at the four kinds of load and sliding velocity is 0.2 m/sec. After the wear experiments, the wear surfaces of the each test specimen were observed by a scanning electronic microscope.

  • Aluminum alloys are being employed in automobile parts as strive to reduce overall vehicle weight to meet demands for improved fuel economy and reduction in vehicle emissions. Al-based composites reinforced with ceramic ($Al_2O_3,\;SiC,\;TiC\;and\;B_4C$) applications in a variety of components in automotive engines, such as liners, where the tribological properties of the material are important. In this study, Al-base composites reinforced with TiC particle powders has been developed for producing plasma spray coatings. The composite plasma spray powders were prepared Al-13Si-3Mg(wt%) alloy with TiC(40, 60 and 80wt%) particles ($0.2~5{\mu}textrm{m}$) by drum type ball milling. The composite powders ($36~76{\mu}textrm{m}$) were sprayed with plasma torch. Plasma sprayed coatings were heat-treated at $500^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours. The wear resistances of the plasma sprayed coatings were found to decrease with increasing TiC content and improved with heat treatment. AlSiMg-40% TiC heat-treated coatings were showed the best wear resistance in this study.
