  • In 2005, the imports of titanium metals was about 22.8 million US$(7,700 tons) in Korea. New scrap produced was estimated to be 359 tons and the exports were about 352 tons. Generally scrap is recylced into titanium ingot either with or without virgin metal using traditional vacuum-arc-melting and cold hearth melting. In Korea, there is no titanium ingot producers(recyclers). In this paper, the brief summary of major titanium melting technology, such as vacuum arc remelting(VAR), electron beam melting(EBM), plasma arc melting(PAM) is given and discussed. In view of titanium market situation of Korea, the technological development of ingot production from scrap is big problem to be solved in order to realize extensive cost reduction for titanium products.

  • In order to make clear the physical relation among the arc plasma, the anode heat transfer and the weld penetration, the results of experimental measurements of temperatures of arc plasma, the distributions of heat input and current on the anode and the weld penetration were presented The experimental results showed that the electron temperature above the anode and current and heat input density on the anode was dominated by the position of the cathode. Furthermore, it was showed that electron temperature of arc plasma was dominated by the cathode shape. These results were related with the results of the welded penetration measurements. As a result, it was showed that the electron temperature above the anode and current density distribution on the anode decided the heat input density distribution on the anode and that the heat input density on the anode remarkably dominated the size of the weld penetration in argon GTA welding process. Furthermore, it was suggested that the cathode played the important role in the determination of the weld penetration in argon GTA welding process.

  • In case of lap joint fillet welds of thin plate, the example which is applicable to Plasma Welding increases substituting for the exiting TIG Welding but the quality of Plasma arc welding has a special feature influenced sensitively by the condition of welding caused by controlling the various parts of welding torch. This research is purposed to improve lap joint fillet welds of thin plate in high quality and attain the high productivity and it is examined that how the change of electrode tip angle and Setback has an effect on the quality of welding and it is investigated how the change of Setback and Standoff has an effect on Melting efficiency using Response Surface Analysis.

  • effectiveness of the PAM graphite-electrode technology for the treatment of many types of low-level radioactive waste including : combustible material, solidified resins in cement, inorganic materials, steel, glass, and solidified boric acid cement. The objectives of PAM-200 evaluation were to verify that 1) the facility meets air emission regulations, 2) the facility can be safely operated when processing hazardous and radioactive materials and 3) satisfactory final waste forms can be produced. Results, derived from KAERI's(Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) analyses for samples of vitrified product, scrubbing solution and offgas collected during test period, show that PAM-200 can treat radioactive wastes as well as hazardous wastes with toxic constituents and radionuclides contained in the offgas exiting from the stack to the environment controlled to be far lower than the limit regulated by air conservation law and atomic law.

  • In this study, plasma arc remelting behaviors according to arc current, arc voltage, and types of plasma gas were investigated using Kroll processed Ti sponges as anode. In the discharge pressure range of vacuum pump ($200{\sim}300kgf/cm^2$), the arc voltage did not vary greatly with the increase of discharge pressure at a given arc length. This means that the pressure in the vacuum chamber during operation hardly changes and the atmospheric pressure maintains. Under various conditions of arc currents (700~900A), the arc voltage slightly increased with arc current. The effects of anode materials and operational variables on the arc length-arc voltage relationship were compared with the results in previous studies. When the atmospheric gas changed from argon to helium, double effect of improvement on the output of the steady state was observed. The increase of output in the plasma arc device was accompanied by an increase in the melting rate of the Ti sponge and the quality of the ingot surface was also improved. The plasma arc remelting of the new scrap titanium and the old scrap zirconium alloy could result in the fabrication of an ingot with high surface quality.

  • Plasma Transferred arc(PTA) hard facing process has been developed to obtain an overlay weld metal having excellent wear resistance. The effect of Ti, TiSi$_{2}$ and TiC powders addition on the surface of Aluminum alloy 5083 has been investigated with PTA process. This paper describes the result of test the performance of the overlay weld metal. The result can be summarized as follows 1. Intermetallic compound is formed on surface of base metal in Ti or TiSi$_{2}$ powder but the reaction with surface of base metal is little seen in TiC powder. 2. In formation of composite layer on aluminum alloy surface by plasma transferred arc welding process, high melting ceramics like TiC powder is excellent. 3. The multipass welding process is available for formation of high density of powder. But the more number of pass, the less effect of powder, it is considered, and limits of number of pass. 4. By increasing area fraction of TiC powder on Al alloy surface, in especially TiC powder the hardness increase more than 40% area fraction and 88% shows about Hv 700.

  • Through the results of off-gas analysis at 3 sampling points in Plasma Arc Melting vitrification pilot plant, it was evaluated the partitioning of spiked materials in off-gas and the decontamination characteristic of off-gas treatment system. Spiked materials are hazard_us heavy metals(Pb, Cd, Hg), radioactive surrogate(Co, Cs) and radioactive materials($^{60}Co,\;^{137}Cs$). Through the Trial burn tests, Decontamination factor of spiked materials in off-gas treatment system is calculated.
