  • The number of abnormal operation procedures (AOPs) for mitigating a plant abnormal status amounts to about one hundreds for the most of 1000MWe optimized power plant (OPR1000) and it is expected that the number of AOPs would be increased to cope with an abnormal status occurred newly. However, it is not well organized for operators to select a proper AOP from alarms occurred in main control room (MCR) during a plant abnormal status. It may be a burden to operators since the selection of AOP to respond an abnormal status is authorized by operators. When multiple alarms occur in MCR, it would take more time to respond them than a single alarm. To reduce the efforts, various MCR operation support systems have been developed. The purpose of this study was to develop a multi-alarm pattern card to select an appropriate AOP effectively when multiple alarms occurs in a single upper layout (UL) of MCR. It can be applied for an operation support tool as well as an education tool.

  • A turbine control system which has been operated for years in a nuclear power plant was retrofitted with a newly developed digital control system. After completion of the retrofit, turbine valve tests were performed to ensure the integrity of each valve's control function. The sequence of each valve test is composed of a closing process and a reopening process. To minimize megawatt variation which normally occurs during the test sequence, we employed a kind of compensator algorithm in the new digital control system which also have been used in the old system. There were difficulties finding optimal parameter settings for our new compensator algorithm because the power plant didn't allow us to perform necessary tuning procedures while the turbine is on load operation. Therefore an alternative measure for the compensator tuning which is independent of the turbine actual operation had to be implemented. So, a process model for the test was required to overcome this situation. We analyzed the operation data of the test and implemented the process model by use of input and output variable relations. Also we verified the process model by use of another condition's operating data. The result shows that the output of model is similar to the actual operation data.

  • Granular Activated Carbon(GAC) is widely used in drinking water treatment. Many of the problems occurring in the GAC process are associated with the operation goal and performance. The purpose of this study were to evaluate the design, operation, and performance of granular activated carbon process in D water treatment plant. The optimal operation conditions of GAC process such as backwashing condition, granular activated carbon replacement time were discussed. The design, operation and performance of GAC process is influenced by their raw water characteristics and placement within the treatment process sequence. A critical analysis of plants experience and the information from the literature identifies the effectiveness of GAC process and indicates where modifications in design and operation could lead to improved performance. It would be useful to evaluate and optimize the GAC process in other treatment plant.

  • An existing unit of power plant is considered to refurbish it for possible application of carbon capture and storage(CCS). Conceptual design of the plant includes basic considerations on the national and international situation of energy use, environmental concerns, required budget, and time schedule as well as the engineering concept of the plant. While major equipment of the recently upgraded power plant is going to be reused, a new boiler for air-oxy fired dual mode operation is to be designed. Cryogenic air separation unit is considered for optimized capacity, and combustion system accommodates flue gas recirculation with multiple cleaning and humidity removal units. The flue gas is purified for carbon dioxide separation and treatment. This paper presents the background of the project, participants, and industrial background. Proposed concept of the plant operation is discussed for the possible considerations on the engineering designs.

  • Construction of wind power plant is increasing rapidly because Jeju island is known as the most suitable place for wind power plant. Rut wind power plant is difficult electric power control and it has a rapid electric power fluctuation. Such a problem has a bad influence on electric power network in small electric network like Jeju. Therefore, we forecast the amount of wind power plant construction by weather information and the rate of utilization for existing facility. We investigate the contribution degree for electric Power demand, economic effect, the case of power network influence. So we forecast influence of wind power plant for Jeju power network's operation in the near future.

  • Korea Electric Power Research Institute(KEPRI) had worked a comprehensive Plant Lifetime Management (PLiM) project for a CANDU plant in corporation with Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power(KHNP). The project had been performed to understand the aging status of major components screened from the plant and to address provisions for the continued operation over its design life. A feasibility of the continued operation was reviewed in the aspects of technology, economics, and regulatory environments. This paper introduces general approach of aging assessment, screening of critical components and an experience of aging assessment for an example of fuel channel that is the most critical component in CANDU plant.

  • In this paper, the ideal standard design and construction of plant factory systems with the Green IT technologies is proposed. For feasibility and problem analysis, a container-type plant factory which was integrated with hardware and software of elemental technologies was operated as a test bed. This operation testing and research will be the foundation of the future construction and operation of large plant factories.

  • This paper is written for the development and application of boiler fuel control algorithm and distributed control system of coal-fired power plant by the steps of design, coding, simulation test, site installation and site commissioning test. Fuel control algorithm has the upper algorithm and it is boiler master control algorithm that controls the fuel, feed water, air by generation output demand. Generation output demand by power load influences fuel control. Because fuel can not be supplied fast to the furnace of boiler, fuel control algorithm was designed adequately to control the steam temperature and to prevent the explosion of boiler. This control algorithms were coded to the control programs of distributed control systems which were developed domestically for the first time. Simulator for coal-fired power plant was used in the test step. After all of distributed control systems were connected to the simulator, the tests of the actual power plant were performed successfully. The reliability was obtained enough to be installed at the actual power plant and all of distributed control systems had been installed at power plant and all signals were connected mutually. Tests for reliability and safety of plant operation were completed successfully and power plant is being operated commercially. It is expected that the project result will contribute to the safe operation of domestic new and retrofit power plants, the self-reliance of coal-fired power plant control technique and overseas business for power plant.

  • This paper is written for the development and application of boiler furnace pressure control algorithm and distributed control system of coal-fired power plant by the steps of design, coding, simulation test, site installation and site commissioning test. The control algorithms were designed in the shape of cascade control for two parts of furnace pressure control and induced draft fan pitch blade by standard function blocks. This control algorithms were coded to the control programs of distributed control systems. The simulator for coal-fired power plant was used in the test step and automatic control, sequence control and emergency stop tests were performed successfully like the tests of the actual power plant. • Rice plant numbers and density are key factors for yield and quality of rice grains. Precise and properly estimated rice plant numbers and density can assure high yield from rice fields. The main objective of this study was to automatically detect and count rice plants using images of usual field condition from an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). We proposed an automatic image processing method based on morphological operation and boundaries of the connected component to count rice plant numbers after transplanting. We converted RGB images to binary images and applied adaptive median filter to remove distortion and noises. Then we applied a morphological operation to the binary image and draw boundaries to the connected component to count rice plants using those images. The result reveals the algorithm can conduct a performance of 89% by the F-measure, corresponding to a Precision of 87% and a Recall of 91%. The best fit image gives a performance of 93% by the F-measure, corresponding to a Precision of 91% and a Recall of 96%. Comparison between the numbers of rice plants detected and counted by the naked eye and the numbers of rice plants found by the proposed method provided viable and acceptable results. The $R^2$ value was approximately 0.893.
