Design of Intelligent Robot Vision System for Automatic Inspection of Steam Generator of Nuclear Plant (원자력 발전소 스팀제너레이터의 자동검사를 위한 지능형 로봇 비젼 시스템 설계)

  • In this paper, we propose anew approach to the development of the automatic vision system to examine and repair the steam generator tubes at remote distance. In nuclear power plants, workers are reluctant of works in steam generator because of the high radiation environment and limited working space. It is strongly recommended that the examination and maintenance works be done by an automatic system for the protection of the operator from the radiation exposure. Digital signal processors are used in implementing real time recognition and examination of steam generator tubes in the proposed vision system. Performance of proposed digital vision system is illustrated by simulation and experiment for similar steam generator model.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the flow of a system that collects fumes in the plasma cutting machine widely used in industrial sites. A plan for improving the fume collection facility of an industrial plant using a large plasma cutter was investigated through flow analysis. Results show that it is effective to capture and suck fumes from a nearby cutter. If more hoods were installed near the cutter, fumes that were scattered internally could be removed effectively. In addition, if suction inflow was increased, the fumes could be removed more effectively.

Analysis of Corrosion Behavior of KOFA Zircaloy-4 Cladding

  • The corrosion behavior of KOFA cladding which is a standard Zircaloy-4 manufactured by Westinghouse Specialty Metal Plant according to the Siemens/KWU's HCW (Highly Cold Worked) standard Zircaloy-4 specification was analyzed using the oxide measurement data of KOFA fuel irradiated in Kori-2 nuclear power plant. Analysis of the measured KOFA cladding oxidation showed that oxidation of KOFA cladding was lower than the design prediction based upon Siemens/KWU's HCW standard Zircaloy-4 cladding. Although the measured fuel rods have relatively low burnup and oxidation and the amount of the measured data are small, analysis of manufacturing and in-reactor operation conditions of KOFA cladding indicates that the differences in the manufacturing processes and chemical composition of the Siemens/KWU's HCW (Highly Cold Worked) standard Zircaloy-4 and KOFA cladding may have somewhat contributed to lower corrosion of KOFA cladding than the expected.

  • Bacteria isolated from ultrapure water made by a high-purity water manufacturing system in a semiconductor manufacturing plant were classified into two groups which either grew in diluted nutrient broth medium (oligotrophic bacteria) or could not grow (copiotrophic bacteria). The nutritional flexibility of oligotrophic and copiotrophic bacteria was investigated. The oligotrophic bacteria were shown to be able to utilize a significantly broader range of organic substrates than the copiotrophic bateria. This finding substantiates the hypothesis that nutritional flexibility is adaptive for oligotrophic bacteria.

  • This paper presents a variant type process planning system for machining of dies for auto-body production. Through the analysis of dies and their manufacturing processes, the authors categorized the press dies into 15 groups according to the similarity of machining features. After critically reviewing current manufacturing procedures, a standard process plan was defined for each group. The authors present MP3D the process planning system built on the standard process plan database, and show how they apply it at the die manufacturing plant of an automobile company. MP3D is expected to reduce major losses in machining such as reworking caused by mistakenly uncut features and eventually to help to accumulate the knowledge of operators. The operation sheet MP3D produces is also used in monitoring the progress of manufacturing of dies. This paper explains the whole development cycle of a process planning system from process analysis to application so that it can help readers to develop and apply a process planning system to their machine shops.

  • The manufacturing environment is rife with nonlinear processes. In this context, an intelligent production controller should be able to predict the dynamic behavior of various subsystems as they react to transient environmental conditions, the varying internal condition of the manufacturing plant, and the changing demands of the production schedule. This level of adaptive capability may be achieved through a coherent methodology for a learning coordinator to predict nonlinear and stochastic processes. The system is to serve as a real time, online supervisor for routine activities as well as exceptional conditions such as damage, failure, or other anomalies. The complexity inherent in a learning coordinator can be managed by a modular architecture incorporating case based reasoning. In the interest of concreteness, the concepts are presented through a case study involving a knowledge based robotic system.

  • 3D printing is a technology that has significantly grown in recent years, particularly in the aerospace, defense, and medical sectors where it offers significant potential cost savings and reduction of the supply chain by allowing parts to be manufactured on-site rather than at a distance supplier. In nuclear industry, 3D printing technology should be applied according to the manufacturing trend change. For the application of 3D printing technology to the nuclear power plant, several problems, including the absence of code & standards of materials, processes and testing & inspection methods etc, should be solved. Preemptively, the improvement of reliability of 3D printing technology, including mechanical properties, structural performance, service performance and aging degradation of 3D printed parts should be supported. These results can be achieved by collaboration of many organizations such as institute, 3D printer manufacturer, metal powder supplier, nuclear part manufacturer, standard developing organization, and nuclear utility.

  • Rotary machine is major equipment in industry. The rotary machine is applied for a machine tool, ship, vehicle, power plant, and so on. But a spindle fault increase product's expense and decrease quality of a workpiece in machine tool. A turbine in power plant is directly connected to human safety. National crisis could be happened by stopping of rotary machine in nuclear plant. Therefore, it is very important to know rotary machine condition in industry field. This study mentioned fault diagnosis algorithm with statistical parameter and empirical mode decomposition. Vibration locations can be found by analyze kurtosis of data from triaxial axis. Support vector of data determine threshold using hyperplane with fault location. Empirical mode decomposition is used to find fault caused by intrinsic mode. This paper suggested algorithm to find direction and causes from generated fault.

  • The air suction filter of the power plant decrease the dust and impurities of suction air that reduce the life and efficiency of the boiler. The suction efficiency of the air filter falls with the dust and impurities when the time of use comes to be long. Therefore, the various contaminant of the filter must remove periodically. This paper presents a developed quick exhaust valve to use in the thermo-electric power plant. to removing contaminants on the filter, the blowing is done shortly by air pressure. The Air flowed out to the out side from the inside of the filter. The performance test of the developed valve is done by making a test-bench according to JIS and KS standards. The efficiency is found higher than the existing related valve.

  • The real time control system for FMS(Flexible Manufacturing System) is implemented at this paper. To achieve this goal, the Colored and Timed Petri-Net model is constructed and used to simulate the real time operation of FMS. Using the Colored and Timed Petri-Net model, evaluating any kind of FMS plant is possible. On-line shceduler, intelligent dispatcher, real time monitor and the simulation model of shop floor are contructed using LAN communication, relational database system in this paper. Finally, this real time control system is applied to the FMS/CIM center at Seoul National University.
