  • This study found potential ability to generate electric power using difference in water temperature between sea surface water and deep water in the East Sea which includes the East Sea Proper Water with the temperature less than 1$^{\circ}C$ throughout a year without seasonal variation. To quantify the difference in water temperature between sea surface water and deep water in the East Sea. We computed the annual mean ($^{\circ}C$), the annual amplitude ($^{\circ}C$), the annual phase (degree) and the duration time which showed more than 15$^{\circ}C$ temperature difference from the water temperature data using Harmonic analysis during 1961~1997. The best place for generating electric power in the East Sea seems to be the eastward ocean areas (36$^{\circ}$ 05'N, 129$^{\circ}$ 48'E~36$^{\circ}$ 05'N, 130$^{\circ}$ 00E'E) from Pohang city. The annual mean of the difference in water temperature between sea surface water and 500 m depth was 24$^{\circ}$C at the place to generate electric power in August according to the data of 1961~1997. the maximum duration periods with more than 15$^{\circ}C$ temperature difference were 215 days (5/5-12/10) a year in the place mentioned electricity with a stable plan. In the East Sea coastal areas of the Korean peninsula, the average minimum depth to reach the East Sea Proper Water from surface water is 300 m and fluctuates between 250 m and 350 m throughout a year. Further studies could be needed for the utilization of cold water, such as the East Sea Proper Water for energy conversion.

  • This study examined the effects of the R&D project managers' leadership on the product development performance. A survey was carried out empirically on a group of 175 experts associated with project management R&D operations in the field of manufacturing, construction engineering, shipbuilding, plant, and IT. The survey results showed that the effects of the R&D project managers' leadership on the product development performance were not significant, and the mediating effects of the project sponsor roles were significant. This means that the leadership of leaders, which requires efficient control and management based on complicated intergroup relationships and roles, is important in a project involving experts from the professional field. This suggests that the efficient leadership of leaders can improve the performance through the cooperation of members in the organization and aggregation of their core competencies in a limited time. Overall, the key results of this study mean that project leaders should play an active mediating role to maximize their leadership and enhance the role of project sponsors. In addition, the mediating role of project sponsors has an effect on the leadership of project managers, affecting the project performance quality.

  • A gas turbine engine plays an important role as a prime mover that is used in the marine transportation field as well as the space/aviation and power plant fields. However, it has a complicated structure and there is a time delay element in the combustion process. Therefore, an elaborate mathematical model needs to be developed to control a gas turbine engine. In this study, a modeling technique for a gas generator, a PLA actuator, and a metering valve, which are major components of a gas turbine engine, is explained. In addition, sub-models are obtained at several operating points in a steady state based on the trial running data of a gas turbine engine, and a method for controlling the engine speed is proposed by designing an NPID controller for each sub-model. The proposed NPID controller uses three kinds of gains that are implemented with a nonlinear function. The parameters of the NPID controller are tuned using real-coded genetic algorithms in terms of minimizing the objective function. The validity of the proposed method is examined by applying to a gas turbine engine and by conducting a simulation.

  • Recently, the operating conditions of the various mechanical structures have become more severe and the running time has become longer as the development of plant equipment increases with the introduction of high technology. Thus, the reliability of the system and its accessories is becoming a problem. Normally, synthetic natural gas (SNG) plants use 1.25Cr-0.5Mo or 2.25Cr-1Mo heat resistant steel according to the operating conditions. In this study, a lab-scale reactor was set up using 1.25Cr-0.5Mo steel, in order to carry out corrosion tests for producing synthetic natural gas. The corrosive characteristics were investigated under 1st-methanator operating conditions and fundamental data about the durability and reliability were obtained by using the experimental test. The analysis of results obtained on the durability of the reactor under emission and injection compositions showed that the hydrogen embrittlement caused by hydrogen and the oxidation corrosion caused by H2O had the most effect on the durability of 1.25Cr-0.5Mo steel in the SNG reactor. However, the hydrogen embrittlement and oxidation corrosion occurred simultaneously under emission conditions, so that the corrosion of the material increased suddenly after a long operating time. Besides, the corrosion of the 1.25Cr-0.5Mo steel under the injection composition was faster than that under the emission composition.

  • The crisis of energy gives rise to the growing concerns over continuing uncertainty in the energy market. Under these circumstances, there are also increasing interests on coals. In particular, Low Rank Coal (LRC) is receiving gradual attentions from green industry. But due to is high moisture content range from 30 - 60%, drying process has to be preceded before being utilized as power plant. In this study drying kinetics of LRC is induced by using a fixed-bed reactor. The drying kinetics was evaluated in from of the particle size, the inlet gas temperature, the drying time, the gas velocity, and the LID ratio. The consideration of the reynold's number was taken for correction of gas velocity, particle size and LID was taken for correction of reactor diameter, packing height of coal. As being seen as characteristic of drying coal, it can be found that fixed-bed reactor can contributed to active drying of free water. In this sense, it could be considered that phase boundary reaction is appropriate mechanism.

  • This research is performed to estimate quality of trial pavement for construction and analyze effect of fatigue life by using the pay factor. Specially, asphalt content which is difficult to control the pavement quality, is selected by pay adjustment standard factors and pay factor is calculated by asphalt content. This research is also analyzed to present relation of fatigue life according to asphalt content, to evaluate quality of the road pavement by calculating pay factor of sampling trial field mixture 2 times. This research confirms that it is different quality of road pavement according to pay factor changes. To analyze the fatigue life of pavement by using asphalt mixture for trial field. As a result, it is conformed that high pay factor could be high fatigue life of trial field. This means that pay factor using probability theory reflects road pavement fatigue life. Also, this study is included that beam fatigue test manufacturing specimen such as mixing type of plant which purvey asphalt mixture to trial field, compared with fatigue life of trial field. As a result, the fatigue life of specimen that is manufactured by mix type is higher than trial field specimen. This means that performance of road pavement can be reduced by gradation or other effects. Therefore, to exactly evaluate the quality of road pavement, pay factor should be calculated appling various pay adjustment standard factors such as gradation, air-void in U.S. states which is adopted pay adjustment.

  • Cordgrass (Spartina spp.) is recognized as a highly invasive plant in estuaries throughout the world because of remarkable versatility and resiliency, significant reproduction, strong adaptability, rapid spreading, and vigorous growth. In this review, therefore, to provide insights on the effective management practices, the previous research works were summarized and discussed. Spartina spp. is a perennial halophyte, warm-season (C4) grass that reproduces both sexually through seeds and asexually by rhizomes. Management strategies for cordgrass have included various physical, biological, and chemical controls. Herbicides are usually the most cost-effective means of control. Currently, glyphosate, imazapyr, fluazifop and haloxyfop have been practically used. To improve the control efficacy, a combination of two more than methods (example, mowing-spraying) is needed to be applied consistently every year for at least 3 to 4 years and to be sprayed with enough dry time (>4-6 hr) at an early growth stage (before flowering). Consistently repeated application of same herbicide have to be avoided to prevent an unexpected emergence of herbicide-resistant lines. On the other hand, Spartina spp. have many positive functions for agricultural and eco-engineering purposes. Thus, we have to give more intensive research for effectively managing advantages and disadvantages of Spartina plantations.

  • In order to determine whether vegetation would be one of the factors for the selection of otter home range, vegetation structure and other potential factors were studied in Hwacheon, Korea. Thirteen sites, otter's activity found and not found, were investigated in North Han River and connected tributary streams of Hwacheon-gun. Three types of vegetation were classified by cluster analysis, which is short grass, tall grass and shrub type. Vegetation zone of each channel is composed of either one type, or mosaic of tall grass and shrub type. Short grass type is common in Lake Paro and upper North Han-river where water level is highly variable throughout a year. Therefore, annual species such as Persicaria nodosa, Fimbristylis dichotomam and Chenopodium ficifolium are the most dominant. Shrub type is common at the downstream sites of Jichon stream and along mainstream of North Han River down Lake Paro. A shrub species, Salix koreensis, is the most common. Tall grass type is dominant occupying the most vegetation zone of the tributary channels. Phragmites japonica is absolutely dominant. Due to its dense cover, a few plant species are co-existed. Otter activity was found in all three vegetation types and no marked activity was found at some sites of tall grass type. There is no difference in species composition and physiognomy between tall grass sites with and without otter activity, while it shows significant difference in fish availability between two groups. Overall we found that home range of otters in the region is along the mainstream and downstream of tributary streams with high fish availability in all vegetation types and in various human activity levels.

  • This study was performed to investigate the stability of soil moisture in controlling air ventilation rate within a horizontal biofilter, and to compare removal efficiency (RE) of indoor air pollutants including fine dust, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and formaldehyde (HCHO), depending on whether dieffenbachias (Diffenbachia amoena) were planted in the biofilter. The relative humidity, air temperature, and soil moisture contents showed stable values, regardless of the presence of D. amoena, and the plants grew normally in the biofilter. REs for number of fine dust particles (PM10 and PM2.5) within the biofilter filled with only soil were at least 30% and 2%, respectively. REs for number of fine dust particles (PM10 and PM2.5) within the biofilter including the plants were above 40% and 4%, respectively. RE for fine dust (PM10) weight was above 4% and 20%, respectively, in the biofilter containing only soil or soil together with plants. In the case of the biofilter filled with only soil, REs for xylene, ethylbenzene, toluene or total VOC (T-VOC) were each more than 63%; however, REs for benzene and formaldehyde (HCHO) were above 22% and 38%, respectively. In the biofilter with the plants, REs for xylene, ethylbenzene, toluene, and T-VOC were each above 72%, and REs for benzene and HCHO were above 39%. Thus, RE of the biofilter integrated with plants was found to be higher for volatile organic compounds than for fine dust. Hence, the biofilter was very effective for indoor air quality improvement and the effect was higher when integrated with plants.

  • The present study investigated identification of cultivars through phylogenetic analysis of 108 Citrus varieties and related cultivars using simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers. Two hundred three SSR primer pairs were used to detect polymorphic markers among 8 Citrus cultivars consisting of 4 mandarins, 1 orange, 1 tangor, 1 tangelo, and 1 pumelo. Eighteen SSR primer pairs were reproducible and showed highly polymorphic alleles. These markers were applied to assess genetic variations of the 108 varieties. Each marker detected 5-14 alleles, with an average of 9.28. The polymorphism information content varied from 0.417 to 0.791 with an average of 0.706. Cluster analysis with SSR markers resulted in 13 major groups reflecting cultivar types and pedigree information. Twelve orange cultivars in the $I-1^{st}$ sub-cluster and 23 mandarin cultivars in the $II-1^{st}$ sub-cluster, respectively, were not discriminated using the SSR markers. This could be due to narrow genetic backgrounds originated through bud mutation or nucellars seedlings. The SSR profile database of Citrus cultivars will be useful as a tool for protection of plant breeders' intellectual property rights in addition to assessing genetic diversity in Citrus cultivars and germplasms.
