Antifungal activities of the crude extracts of Anemarrhena asphodeloides. Coptis japonica and Phellodendron amurense were tested against Phvtophthora capsici. and the control effect on red-pepper phytophthora hlight and phytotoxicities of red-pepper were investigated. The results were summarized as follows; Mycelial growth and zoosporangial germination of the red-peppcr phytophthora hlight organism P. capsici were inhihited hy thc crude extracts of plant materials. Methanol extracts or plant materials had hctter antifungal activity than water extracts at hoth a room temperature and a hoiling condition. Antifungal activities of three crude extracts were gradually decreased with prolonged storage period. Red-pepper phytophthora hlight was effectively controlled hy the crude extracts of three plant materials. Of these. the crude extract of C. japonica was marvelously effective. Phytotoxic symptom to red-pepper seedling showed hy water cultural method hut not by pot test. Seed germination and radicle growth of red-pepper were inhihited hy the crude extracts of three plant materials. Phytotoxic symptoms in the leaves and fruits of red-pepper were not ohserved with exogenous foliage application of the three crude extracts.
This study was conducted to evaluate effects of plant extracts on methanogenesis and rumen microbial diversity in in vitro. Plant extracts (Artemisia princeps var. Orientalis; Wormwood, Allium sativum for. Pekinense; Garlic, Allium cepa; Onion, Zingiber officinale; Ginger, Citrus unshiu; Mandarin orange, Lonicera japonica; Honeysuckle) were obtained from the Plant Extract Bank at Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology. The rumen fluid was collected before morning feeding from a fistulated Holstein cow fed timothy and commercial concentrate (TDN; 73.5%, crude protein; 19%, crude fat; 3%, crude fiber; 12%, crude ash; 10%, Ca; 0.8%, P; 1.2%) in the ratio of 3 to 2. The 30 ml of mixture, comprising McDougall buffer and rumen liquor in the ratio of 4 to 1, was dispensed anaerobically into serum bottles containing 0.3 g of timothy substrate and plant extracts (1% of total volume, respectively) filled with $O_2$-free $N_2$ gas and capped with a rubber stopper. The serum bottles were held in a shaking incubator at $39^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. Total gas production in all plant extracts was higher (p<0.05) than that of the control, and total gas production of ginger extract was highest (p<0.05). The methane emission was highest (p<0.05) at control, but lowest (p<0.05) at garlic extract which was reduced to about 20% of methane emission (40.2 vs 32.5 ml/g DM). Other plant extracts also resulted in a decrease in methane emissions (wormwood; 8%, onion; 16%, ginger; 16.7%, mandarin orange; 12%, honeysuckle; 12.2%). Total VFAs concentration and pH were not influenced by the addition of plant extracts. Acetate to propionate ratios from garlic and ginger extracts addition samples were lower (p<0.05, 3.36 and 3.38 vs 3.53) than that of the control. Real-time PCR indicted that the ciliate-associated methanogen population in all added plant extracts decreased more than that of the control, while the fibrolytic bacteria population increased. In particular, the F. succinogens community in added wormwood, garlic, mandarin orange and honeysuckle extracts increased more than that of the others. The addition of onion extract increased R. albus diversity, while other extracts did not influence the R. albus community. The R. flavefaciens population in added wormwood and garlic extracts decreased, while other extracts increased its abundance compared to the control. In conclusion, the results indicated that the plant extracts used in the experiment could be promising feed additives to decrease methane gas emission from ruminant animals while improving ruminal fermentation.
This communication emphasized upon the sensitivity of the crude extracts of clerodendrum inerme against some of the human pathogenic bacteria. Five plant extracts (Petrol, Benzene, Methanol, Ethly acetate and Aqueous) under six different concentrations(500 ${\mu}g/ml$, 1 mg/ml, 2 mg/ml, 5 mg/ml, 10 mg/ml and 15 mg/ml) were tested by disk diffusion method. Methanol, Ethyl acetate and Aqueous extracts of the plant showed significant inhibition against fifteen of the eighteen bacteria tested. No earlier report on antibacterial activity of this taxon could be found in literature.
The effects of various kind and amount of nitrogen fertilizers on the plant grorth. physiological , yield and extracts. ligustilide, butylidene phthalide contents of curdsdrug "Tou-ki" (AnTelica acutiloba Kitagawa) were investigated in 1989. Five plots variouskind of nitrogen fertilizers. Namely, no nitrogen, urea. ammonium nitrate, ammoniumchloride and control plot of ammonium sulfate. The other, by providing five plotsdifferent composed ratio of nitrogenous fertilizers. containing no nitrogen (No. o) .0.5-fold nitrogen (No s), control plot of 1.0-fold nitrogen(Nl.o). 1.5-fold nitrogen(Nl s)and 2.0-fold nitrogen Na. o), but nitogen was used the ammonium sulfate. The results showedthat the crude drug "Tou-ki" can ammonium chloride be produced in good yield, displayingboth good plant growth and remarkable physiologically-active conditions, and it can beproduced such that the extracts is maximized. Additionally, using methods of gaschromatography (GC) , it was established that ligustilide and butylidene phthalide, majorcomponents in the crude drug was recovered in a good yield from the fully grown plants. The other, the plant growth, the physiologically-active, the weight of whole plant, theyield of extracts and ligustilide, butylidene phthalide were seen to be best at the plotof 2.0-fold nitrogen and according to the increase or decrease of nitrogen decreasedgradually. Therefore. about 2 fold of standard quantity seems to be the most suitablequantity of nitrogen for "Tou-ki" cultivation .uot;Tou-ki" cultivation .ion .

The extracts from each plants were purified by solvent fractionation, column chromatography, TLC and analyzed GC and HPLC. As a result, contents crude gingseng saponins and saikosaponins were the highest in Oenothera odorata and Metaplexis japonica, respectively. and contents crude alkaloids was the highest in Metaplexis japonica among the all plants xamined. HPLC was conducted to detect of saponins. As a result, ginseng saponin-like substances was detected in the extracts of Euphobia splendens, Taraxacum mongolicum and Metaplexis japonica, gingsen-like substances and its of saikosaponin c-like substances was detected in the extracts of Camellia japonica and Aleurites fordii. GC was conducted to detect of alkaloid. As a result, nicotine-like substances was detected in only the extracts of Fatsia japonica.
The present study has been undertaken to characterize availability of citrus as a medicinal plant with antineoplastic property. The crude extracts from 40 species of fruits with 12 species of the local Citrus in Cheju island were evaluated on their potential activities against mouse P388 lymphocytic leukaemia in vitro. The percent cytotoxicity varied from 25.40 to 97.94% at a concentration of $100{\mu}g/mL$. Among 40 spp., 8 species showed high toxicity more than 90% against P388 cells and Cheongkyool(C. nippokoreana) exhibited the most cytotoxicity as 97.94%($IC_{50}=20.2{\mu}g/mL$). Nine varieties of C. junos were showed insiginicant cytotoxicity. In trifoliate orange, immature fruit was stronger than mature and peel extract showed higher cytotoxicity($IC_{50}=18{\mu}g/mL$) than the other tissues. Hexane fraction from methanol(MeOH) extract of trifoliate orange showed highly significant inhibition of cell growth($IC_{50}=3.9{\mu}g/mL$). In addition, its cytotoxicity increased remarkably from 3.95 to $0.40{\mu}g/mL$ as exposure time legthened. Cytotoxic activities of crude extracts were decreased considerably during a six months storage period. It was apparent that there is considerable variation in cytotoxicity, depending upon species, maturity and storage time of extracts. There was no meaningful cytotoxic difference between archicitrus and metacitrus in the genus Citrus.
Acid mine drainage occurrence is a serious environmental problem by mining industry, it usually contains high levels of metal ions, such as iron, copper, zinc, aluminum, and manganese, as well as metalloids of which arsenic is generally of the greatest concern. An indigenous plant extract was used to produce calcium carbonate from Canavalia ensiformis as effective biomaterial, and its ability to form the calcium carbonate under stable conditions was compared to that of purified urease. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were employed to elucidate the mechanism of calcium carbonate formation from the crude plant extracts. The results revealed that urease in the plant extracts catalyzed the hydrolysis of urea in liquid state cultures and decreased heavy metal amounts in the contaminated soil. The heavy metal amounts were decreased in the leachate from the treated mine soil; 31.7% of As, 65.8% of Mn, 50.6% of Zn, 51.6% of Pb, 45.1% of Cr, and 49.7% of Cu, respectively. The procedure described herein is a simple and beneficial method of calcium carbonate biomineralization without cultivation of microorganisms or further purification of crude extracts. This study suggests that crude plant extracts of Canavalia ensiformis have the potential to be used in place of purified forms of the enzyme during remediation of heavy metal contaminated soil.

Crude extracts of pathogenic Streptomyces turgidiscabies isolates produced necrotic reaction on potato slices. Necrosis was first visible 24 hr after application and increased in severity over several days. However, necrosis was not observed when crude extracts of nonpathogenic strains were applied onto tuber slices. Presence of thaxtomin A from crude extracts of pathogenic S. turgidiscabies was identified by thin layer chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography. Nonpathgenic strains did not produce thaxtomin A in oatmeal broth. Inoculation of potato tuber slices with thaxtomin A partially purified from crude extract of a pathogenic S. turgidiscabies ST5 reproduce necrotic reaction suggesting that thaxtomin A is a pathogenicity determinant in S. turgidiscabies.

To develop a natural antioxidant and anti-hemolytic agents, we investigated the effects of ethanol extracts of Rubus coreanus Miquel (crude extracts). Crude extract was extracted with ethanol. Antioxidant activity of crude extracts was evaluated by employing two different assays, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and super oxide dismutase(SOD)-like activity. Also, anti-hemolytic activity of crude extract was determined using $H_2O_2$-induced hemolysis in normal rat red blood cells (RBC) or plasma. The extracts obtained from crude extract dose-dependently increased the scavenging activity on DPPH-induced radicals and SOD-like activity. RBC oxidative hemolysis induced by $H_2O_2$ was significantly suppressed by the extracts of Rubus coreanus Miquel in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that crude extracts may have value as the potential antioxidant and anti-hemolytic medicinal plant.
Crude extracts from 20 species of plants 16 families were evaluated for their antifungal activities against Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and three plant extracts of them were applied to Ginseng in order to investigate the usefulness for Ginseng anthracnose control. Among the crude extracts from 20 species being tested, it of A. cepa, R. undulatum and C. japonica showed considerably antifungal activity against mycelial growth and conidial germination of C. gloeosporioides.. Ginseng anthranose was controlled at 2% concentration of A. cepa and R. undulatum and 1% C. japonica extract, but control value of three plant extracts was inferior to Mancozeb WP. Phytotoxic symptoms were observed in the leaves of ginseng with exogenous foliage application of 10% concentration of three plant extracts and 2% concentration C. japonica extract but not observed at 1% concentration.
