Effect of Calcium Cyanamide on Control of Clubroot of Chinese Cabbage Caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae (석회질소에 의한 배추뿌리혹병 방제효과)

  • The effect of calcium cyanamide($CaCN_2$) on suppression of clubroot of Chinese cabbage was evaluated in the fields infested with Plasmodiophora brassicae at National Institute of Highland Agriculture, Pyeongchang, Korea, from 2002 to 2003. Calcium cyanamide was found to be more effective in reducing disease severity than flusulfamide dust powder. The optimal dosage of calcium cyanamide for control of clubroot of Chinese cabbage was 61 kg/10a. When calcium cyanamide was incorporated into soil at 5, 10, 15 and 20 days before planting(DBP), maximum disease suppression was obtained in the plot with calcium cyanamide, applied 5DBP. The fertilizer property of calcium cyanamide as a nitrogen fertilizer was also investigated by comparing with urea on cv. CR Gangta, a resistant variety of Chinese cabbage. The nitrogen uptake in calcium cyanamide treatment(17.6 kg/10a), was not significantly different from that of urea(17.8 kg/10a). These results indicated that calcium cyanamide could be used as a soil disinfectant as well as a nitrogen fertilizer.

  • The highest fresh weight of Agaricus bisporus was obtained at pH 7.5 of casing soil. Above or below this pH level, the yields were significantly reduced. Stimulatory effect of calcium on the mycelial growth depended upon pH of casing soil, In neutral or slightly alkaline soil, the stimulatory effect was increased. The effects of supplementing calcium carbonate or hydrated lime to casing soil were assumed not only the influence of pH of casing soil, but also stimulatory effect of calcium ion on mycelial growth of A. bisporus.

The Effect of Dietary Protein Source and Sulfur Amino acid Content on bone Metabolism in Growing Rats (식이 단백질의 종류와 함황아미노산 함량이 성장기 쥐의 골밀도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was performed to evaluate the effect of dietary protein source and sulfur amino acid content on bone metabolism in ra. Thirty male rats (body weight 145$\pm$2g) were divided into three groups. The rats in the first group were fed on casein 20% diet as animal protein source and those in the second group were fed on soy 20% diet as plant protein source. Sulfur amino acid ratio of these group was 1.07:1. The rats in the third group were fed on soy 20% diet and the sulfur amino acid were supplemented with the amount contained as much in the soy 20% diet. All rats were fed on experimental diet and deionized water ad libitum for 9 weeks, The total body, spine, femur bone mineral density and bone mineral content were measured using Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry Calcium, phosphate, pyridinoline, creatinine in urine and calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin in serum were measured. During the experimental period, plant protein (soy protein) group had a lower urinary Ca excretion, urine pyridinoline & crosslinks value and had a higher Ca efficiency in total bone and femur bone mineral density than animal protein (casein) group. There were no significant differences in serum calcium, phosphate, alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin among the three groups of the rats. The findings from this study demonstrated that plant protein (soy protein) is beneficial of bone mineral density because it had a higher Ca efficiency in total bone and femur bone mineral density than animal protein (casein). However, the supplementation of sulfur amino acid on soy results were consistent with prior studies that dietary sulfur amino acid load had a negative effect on calcium balance. The rats fed sulfur amino acid supplementation diet increased urinary calcium excretion and decreased calcium efficiency for total and femur mineral density. Effect of prohexadium-calcium on growth, lodging and yield of proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.)

  • The proso millet is vulnerable to lodging due to high plant height and shallow root. A lodging results in a hard mechanical harvesting and yield loss. One of solutions on this problem is inhibition of internode elongation. The objective of this study was to set up use time and dose of prohexadium-calcium, is growth inhibitor. The experimental variety was Ibaekchal. The experiment design was a split-plot design with three replications. The treatments were as follow: Main-plots were 25 and 35 day after sowing(DAS) as use time and sub-plots were 0%, 50%, 100%(diluted solution of 1000 times, $1000{\ell}\;ha^{-1}$), 150% as dose. The amount of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium fertilization were 90, 70, $80kg\;ha^{-1}$, respectively. The size of high ridge and plant spacing were $90{\times}30cm$ and $60{\times}15cm$, respectively. Proso millet was sown on June 9, 2016 by hands and was adjusted at 2 plant per hill. The growth survey of vegetative growth stage was conducted at 1 day before treatment and with one week interval after treatment. Data were collected: (1) grain yield: weight of grain in $kg\;ha^{-1}$, (2) 1000 grain weight: average weight of 1000 grain, (3) plant height: distance from soil to top of panicle or leaf in cm, (4) ear length: distance from top of stem to top of ear in cm, (5) stem diameter: diameter of second internode (6) degree of lodging: percentage of lodging area, etc. Analyses of variance were performed using R version 3.3.1(https://www. r- project. org). The Duncan's multiple range test(DMR) was used to separate treatment means at P < 0.05. There was a significant difference in plant height and number of stem among the use time and dose of prohexadium-calcium during vegetative growth stage. At 25 DAS, the difference with no treatment increased until 25 day after treatment and decreased since then. The difference in number of stem increased until 18 day and decreased since 25 day. At 35 DAS, the difference with no treatment in plant height and number of stem increased until 22 day after treatment and decreased since then. We assumed that the effect of prohexadium-calcium was inhibition of internode elongation and promotion of tillering, continued untel 25day after treatment. At 25 DAS, the degree of lodging deceased to 100%, 30%, 10% and 0% as dose increased. At 35 DAS, the degree of lodging decreased to 100%, 20%, 0% and 0% as dose increased. At 25 DAS, the yield was 2910, 2710, 3190, $2310kg\;ha^{-1}$ among dose. At 35 DAS, the yield was 2750, 2630, 2220, $2050kg\;ha^{-1}$. We recommend that the optimum use time and dose of prohexadium-calcium for proso millet is 1000 times diluted solution of $1000{\ell}$ per ha at 25 day after sowing.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the role of Silicon accumlated in rice plant under different conditions of light and humidity, using radioisotopes Ca-45, Mn-54, and P-32. This results obtained in are as follows; 1. Light effect is more severe in phosphate uptake by rice plant than is calcium. Amounts of phosphate uptake in light condition is six times more than in dark conditions, while that of calcium is double. 2. Change of relative humidity affects calcium absorption and transport from root to shoot. It seems not to be influenced in phosphate and manganese uptake by relative humidity. 3. More uptake of each element Ca-45, P-32, or Mn-54 was found in the rice plant applied with silicic acid. It is considered that there must be some relationship between silicon content and ion uptake in rice plant. 4. The transport ratio of nutrient from root to shoot shows a specific pattern that calcium is approximately 1.0 manganese 0.5 and phosphate 0.2 respectively.

Silencing of CaCDPK4 ( Capsicum annuum Calcium Dependent Protein Kinase) and ItsOrtholog, NbCDPK5 Induces Cell Death in Nicotiana benthamiana

  • We have isolated a full-length cDNA clone, CaCDPK4 encoding a typical calcium-dependent protein kinase (CDPK) from hot pepper cDNA library. Genomic southern blot analysis showed that it belongs to a multigene family, but represents a single copy gone in hot pepper genome. RNA expression pattern of this gene revealed that it is induced by infiltration of Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. glycines Bra into hot pepper leaves but not by water deficit stress. However, high salt treatment of NaCl (0.4 M) solution to hot pepper plants strongly induced CaCDPK4 gene. In addition, this gene is weakly responsive to the exogenous application of salicylic acid or ethephon. Biochemical study of the GST-CaCDPK4 recominant protein showed that it autophosphorylates in vitro and the presence of EGTA, a calcium chelater, eliminates the kinase activity of the recombinant protein. As a way to identify the in vivo function of CaCDPK4 in plants, VIGS (Virus-Induced Gene Silencing) was employed. Agrobacterium-mediated TRV silencing construct containing the kinase and calmodulin domain of CaCDPK4 resulted in cell death of Nicotiana benthamiana plants. A highly homologous H benthamiana CDPK gene, NbCDPK5, to CaCDPK4 was cloned from N. benthamiana cDNA library. VIGS of NbCDPK5 also resulted in cell death. The molecular characterization of this cell death phenotype is being under investigation.

Effect of Application Level of Calcium Hydroxide on Brown-Leaf Symptom and Root Yield of Panax ginseng Cultivated in Paddy Soil (인삼 논재배에서 석회 시용에 따른 갈반형 황증 발생 억제 효과)

  • Physiological disorders such as symptoms in leaf colored with brown spots are so many occurred in ginseng garden cultivated with paddy soil. This study was carried out to inhibit the symptoms of brown-colored leaf in 3-year-old ginseng by fertilizing calcium hydroxide [$Ca(OH)_2$] of 100 ~ 400 kg per 10a on paddy soil before transplant of seedling. Soil pH was rapidly increased, while Fe was decreased in soil by the increase of application level of calcium hydroxide. Soil pH was increased from 4.53 to 6.18 when calcium hydroxide was fertilized at level of 100kg per 10a. The content of Fe in ginseng leaf was decreased more than the control by fertilizing calcium hydroxide in soil. Ratio of brown-colored leaf and plant height and leaf area were decreased by the increase of calcium hydroxide. Ratio of survived root and yield of root showed the peak at the application level of 100 kg per 10a, and both of them were gradually decreased by the increase of calcium hydroxide. The decrease of missing plant rate above the application level of 200 kg per 10a had a negative effect on the decrease of yield of root.

The Cause of Calcium Deficient leaf of Burley Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) (Burley종 연초의 칼슘결핍엽 발생원인)

  • Field experiment was conducted to find out the cause of calcium deficiency of burley tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.), Liming materials and application rate were CaSO4 : Ca 35kg/10a, CaCO3 : 35kg/10a and agricultural lime : Ca 142kg/10a. The breakdown in tissues at tips and margins of upper leaves was developed at maximum growth stage. If complete breakdown and death does not occur and growth takes place later, giving the leaf a scalloped appearance. Upper leaves contained lower calcium content than other leaves. The stem and midvein of calcium deficient plants contained lower calcium and calcium minus oxalic acid, but higher oxalic acid contents than those of normal plant. Fresh leaves of limed plot contained higher calcium and oxalic acid, but not significant increment of calcium minus oxalic acid than those of unlimed plot. Since calcium oxalate is insoluble, it could precipitate within the culls if the calcium and oxalic acid are accessible to each other. It suggest that high level of oxalic acid in stem and midvein could be interfering with translocation of calcium to upper leaves.

Effects of Calcium Fertilization on the Occurrence of the Internal Brown Spot in Solanum tuberosum cv. Atlantic (칼슘施肥가 감자品種 '大西'의 內部褐色班點 發生에 미치는 影響)

  • Effects of calcium on the total tuber yield, dry matter content, internal brown spot and hollow heart of a processing potato cv. Atlantic were investigated to obtain some basic informations in summer cropping. The occurrence rate of the internal brown spots in cv. Atlantic tubers were highly decreased with the significant differences in the Ca-treated plots compared to the Ca-nontreated plots. However, no significant differences amongs Ca-treated plots were shown. Plant height and the number of main stems were not affected by the changes of the calcium levels, but top fresh weight was the highest in the plots of Ca(200kg/ha) level. In addition to its total yield, dry matter content, hollow heart was not affected by calcium fertilization. Therefore, the causal factor of the internal brown spot is attributed to the calcium deficiency in the tubers of cv. Atlantic.
