  • In this study, we proposed a novel electrode structure for the fringe field switching (FFS) mode LCD and performed a three-dimensional computer simulation to calculate the optical transmittance for the new structure. In the simulation Erickson-leslie equation and Berreman $4{\times}4$ matrix were used for obtaining the director distribution profiles of liquid crystal molecules and the electro-optical characteristics, respectively. Considering the complexity of the motional equation of the liquid crystal molecules, FDM (finite difference method) was used as a numerical method. From the results, We revealed that the light transmission of the newly designed pixel structure is expended to the edge of the pixel electrode. We also confirmed that the light transmittance increased more than 13% compared to that of the conventional electrode structure.

  • The variations in the device characteristics of hydrogenated amorphous thin-film transistors (a-Si:H TFTs) were studied according to the processes of pixel electrode fabrication to make active-matrix flat-panel displays. The off-state current was about 1 pA and the switching ratio was over $10^6$ before fabrication of pixel electrodes; however, the off-state current increased over 10 pA after fabrication of pixel electrodes. Surface treatment on SiNx passivation layers using plasma could improve the off-state characteristics after pixel electrode process. $N_2$ plasma treatment gave the best result. Charge accumulation on the SiNx passivation layer during the deposition of transparent conducting layer might cause the increase of off-state current after the fabrication of pixel electrodes.

  • DC influence between pixel electrode and alignment layer (AL) in in-plane switching mode LCD was analyzed through DC equivalence-circuit equation induction, DC charge-discharge simulation, luminance and residual-DC measurement systems using test patterned (TP) cell. DC discharging rate (DDR) of single layer electrode was faster than that of double layer electrode and DDR of low resistance AL was faster than that of high resistance AL. DC discharging characteristics had a close relation to layer number and resistance between two electrodes.

  • We have studied electro-optic characteristics as a function of passivation thickness existing between common electrode and pixel electrodes in the fringe-field switching (FFS) mode using the LC with positive dielectric anisotropy. A steep increase in the transmission is observed with increase in the passivation layer from $0.29{\mu}m$ to $1.09{\mu}m$ and thereafter it almost saturates over the $1.09{\mu}m$ of passivation layer. This saturation is mainly associated with correlation between transmittance at the center region of pixel electrode and at the center region between pixel electrodes. From the results, optimal thickness of passivation layer can be defined.

  • Electrowetting display (EWD) is one of the strong candidates for electronic paper like display (EPD). However, in the conventional EWD, the oil movement occurs in random direction so that we can observe irregular distribution of contracted oil in the operation. To realize colorful display and achieve a fast response time, oil movement in the pixel should be directed in a specific direction. In this paper, we report the result of oil contraction with specified direction which is achieved by patterned electrode. From the experiments, we find that the oil movement depends on the portion of etched electrode area and study other influencing factors of patterned electrode on the oil movement.

  • Conventional viewing angle switching electrode requires pixel division and additional liquid crystal panel. Hence the conventional viewing angle switching has low aperture ratio and high thickness. In this paper we proposed new viewing angle switching using hybrid aligned nematic mode by fringe-field electrode field (named HAN-FFS) with single liquid crystal panel. The fringe-field switching electrode is located at the bottom, and the additional common electrode is located at the top of the cell to control viewing angle. The proposed device is free from additional liquid crystal panel and pixel division. Consequently, the suggested structure has not only high aperture ratio but also show an excellent potential for viewing angle switching.

  • In this study, we presented a novel method to calculate unknown voltages on the floating electrodes introduced in a unit pixel of TFT-LCDs using three-dimensional molecular director simulation. For the simulation of the potential distribution profiles generated under the influence of the floating electrodes, we used the floating boundary condition on the surface enclosing the floating electrodes. The constraint for the floating boundary condition was derived from the charge neutrality condition about the floating electrodes disconnected from voltage sources. For the pixel with the floating electrodes patterned between the pixel and the data electrodes, we simulated the molecular director and the potential distribution in three-dimension, and then observed the location of the disclination lines around the edge of the pixel electrode. As a result, it was revealed that the floating electrodes significantly affect the electro-optical characteristics such as the location of the disclination line.

  • In this study, we propose a new pixel edge shape of the fringe field switching(FFS) mode which ensures more stable movement of liquid crystal molecules and higher transmittance at the edge part. the electro optical properties were calculated 3-dimensionally using by commercially available "Techwiz LCD". From the simulation results, we showed that the dynamic stability of liquid crystal molecules was obtained in a new pixel structure. We also revealed that the transmittance of the new pixel structure increased more than 6 % compared to that of the conventional pixel structure.

  • The a-InGaZnO (a-IGZO) thin film transistor (TFT) has the advantages of larger mobility than that of amorphous silicon TFTs, acceptable reliability and uniformity over a large area, and low process cost. A capacitive-type touch sensor was studied with an a-IGZO TFT that can be used on the front side of a display due to its transparency. A capacitive sensor detects changes of capacitance between the surface of the finger and the sensor electrode. The capacitance varies according to the distance between the sensor plate and the touching or non-touching of the sensing electrode. A capacitive touch sensor using only one a-IGZO TFT was developed with the reduction of two bus lines, which made it easy to reduce the pixel pitch. The proposed sensor circuit maintained the amplification performance, which was investigated for various drive conditions.

  • We have studied effect of Patterned Vertical Alignment (PVA) mode on electro-optical characteristics and stability of liquid crystal director upon electrode pattering. In the present studies, LC director field and stability of conventional PVA mode electrode patterns were analyzed and new type of electrode patterns were suggested. At last, comparison between this new type of electrode patterns to conventional electrode pattern types were followed.
