  • This paper was a study about noise reduction through flow stabilization in duct using experimental method and numerical analysis at the same time. To determine the fan's type three kinds of fans(axial fan, centrifugal fan, and axial fan with centrifugal type blades) was examined to investigate the suitability for in-line duct. As a result, under the equal number of rotation 2000 RPM, performance of an axial fan with centrifugal type blades was the most superior by 55dBA at 4.3CMM among other fans. After this, analyzed the results of the numerical analysis to find out the optimum design of pitch angle such as $0^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$ and $20^{\circ}$. The intensity of turbulence was low when pitch angle was $15^{\circ}$ and air volume became peak by 5.08 CMM. It was observed that axis component of velocity increased gradually when pitch angle increased from $0^{\circ}$ to $20^{\circ}$, and embodied noise reduction and improvement of air flow rate through flow stabilization.

  • In this study, AISI M2 powder was selected primarily through various literature in order to improve the hardness and wear resistance. Among the laser metal deposition parameters, laser power was studied to improve the deposition efficiency in the laser metal deposition using a diode pumped disk laser. SKD61 hot work steel plate and AISI M2 powder were used as a substrate and powder for laser metal deposition, respectively. Fixed parameters are CTWD, focal position, travel speed, powder feed rate, etc. Experiments for the laser metal deposition were carried out by changing laser power. Through optical micrographs analysis of cross-section in LMD track, effect of the major parameters were predicted by track pitch. As the track pitch increased, so the reheated zone width, the overlap width and the minimum thickness was decreased. The hardness was decreased in the HAZ area, the hardness in the reheated HAZ area was decreased significantly and regularly in particular.

  • CMP characteristics such as material removal rate and edge effect were measured and investigated in accordance with pad grooving effect, groove width, depth and pitch. GSQ (Groove Stiffness Quotient) and GFQ (Groove Flow Quotient) were proposed to estimate pad grooving characteristics. GSQ is defined as groove depth(D) divided by pad thickness(T) and GFQ is defined as groove width(W) divided by groove pitch(P). As GFQ value increased, material removal rate increased some point but gradually saturated. It seems that material removal rate is not affected by each parameter respectively but by interaction of these parameters such as groove dimensions. In addition, an increase in GFQ and GSQ causes edge effect to be improved. Because, pad stiffness decreases as GSQ and GFQ increase. In conclusion, groove influences relative pad stiffness although original mechanical properties of pad are unchanged by grooving. Also, it affects the flow of slurry that has an effect on the lubrication regime and polishing results. The change of groove dimensions has influence on pad stiffness and slurry flow, so that polishing results such as removal rate and edge effect become changed.

  • A simple algorithm for discriminating voiced sounds in a speech is proposed in this paper. In addition to low-frequency energy and zero-crossing rate (ZCR), both of which have been widely used in the past for identifying voiced sounds, the proposed algorithm incorporates pitch variation to improve the discrimination rate. Based on TIMIT corpus, evaluation result shows an improvement of 13% in the discrimination of voiced phonemes over that of the traditional algorithm using only energy and ZCR.

  • The characteristics of the laser metal deposition parameters were studied to enhance the deposition efficiency using a diode pumped disk laser. STD61 hot tool steel plate and Fe based AISI M2 alloy were used as a substrate and powder for the laser metal deposition, respectively. Among the laser metal deposition parameters the laser power, track pitch and powder feed rate were used to estimate the deposition efficiency. From the experimental results, the deposition efficiency was shown to be excellent when 1.8kW laser power 500um track pitch and 10g/min of the powder feed rate were used. For this optimal condition the average hardness of the deposition track was approximately 830HV, and this value is 30~50% better than the hardness of the commercially produced tool steel after heat treatment.

  • Fetal monitoring is a routine procedure to obtain a record of physiologic functions during pregnancy and labor. It is required to determine fetal heart frequency accurately. There are various types of fetal heart rate(FHR) determination and the most frequently applied method is transabdominal Doppler ultrasound. However, in the case of weak or noise corrupted Doppler ultrasound signals, conventional peak detections and the autocorrelation function method have many difficulties to determine FHR precisely. Also the autocorrelation function is effected by threshold level and window size. To solve these problems, the high resolution pitch determination algorinthm is introduced to detect FHR from Doppler ultrasound signals. This scheme digitally processes Doppler ultrasound signal for digital rectification, envelope detection, decimation and correlation calculation of two interconnected segments and then FHR is determined by its maximal value. Even in the case of a greatly smeared noise signal, this algorithm is able to search FHR more accurately than autocorrelation function by means of compensating FHR with a constant correlation threshold. This algorithm is simulated by 386-MATLAB on PC 486/DX and verified that it is superior to the autocorrelation function method.

  • This paper proposes a pose-invariant face recognition method using cylindrical model and stereo camera. We divided this paper into two parts. One is single input image case, the other is stereo input image case. In single input image case, we normalized a face's yaw pose using cylindrical model, and in stereo input image case, we normalized a face's pitch pose using cylindrical model with estimated object's pitch pose by stereo geometry. Also, since we have advantage that we can utilize two images acquired at the same time, we can increase overall recognition rate by decision-level fusion. By experiment, we confirmed that recognition rate could be increased using our methods.

  • In this paper, a prediction method for dynamic stability derivatives is studied using steady state simulations in rotational coordinates. The simulations require the extension of a standard CFD formulations based on inertial coordinate. A new CFD code based on the method are developed. Flows induced by steady circular motions of airfoils with a constant pitch rate are simulated with the code. From the numerical simulations, the pitch rate derivatives are obtained at various Mach numbers, and the results are compared with other numerical results. The numerical simulations show that the new code are capable of predicting dynamic stability derivatives.

  • Due to the presence of Dean flow in curved ducts, helical channels have drawn attention recently because of the practical industrial applications. The manipulation of fluids through microfluidic devices is widely used in many scientific and industrial areas. In the present study, numerical simulations were performed on a helical microchannel to predict the impact of different design parameters that affect Dean flow. Important geometric parameters such as the channel cross section, pitch, radius of curvature, and number of turns were considered for the analysis. The study also incorporates the effect of varying flow rate on Dean flows. It was found from the simulation results that microchannel cross section and pitch have a significant impact on maintaining the Dean flow, compared to the radius of curvature, number of turns, and flow rate.

  • In order to solve the conflict problem between the ride comfort and the road holding, the optimal design of shock absorber that minimizes the r.m.s. of sprung mass vertical acceleration and pitch rate with the understeer characteristics constraints in the high speed stability is proposed. The design of experiments and the nonlinear optimization algorithm are used together to obtain the optimal design of shock absorber. The second order regression models of the input variables(front and rear damping coefficients) and the output variables (ride comfort index and road holding one) are obtained by the central composite design in the design of experiments. Then the optimal design of shock absorber can be systematically adjusted with applying the nonlinear optimization algorithm to the obtained second order regression model. The frequency response analysis of sprung mass acceleration and pitch rate shows the effectiveness of the proposed optimal design of shock absorber in the sprung mass resonance range with the understeer characteristics constraints.
