  • We investigated the effect of self-assembled BSO nano-defects as pinning centers in BSO-added GdBCO films when the thicknesses of films were varied. 3.5 vol. % BSO-added GdBCO films with varying thicknesses from 200 nm to 1000 nm were deposited on $SrTiO_3$ (STO) substrate by using pulsed laser deposition (PLD) process. For the films with thicknesses of 400 nm and 600 nm, 'anomaly shoulders' in $J_c-H$ characteristic curves were observed near the matching field. The anomaly shoulders appeared in the field dependence of $J_c$ may be attributed to the existence of double pinning mechanisms in thin films. The fit to the pinning force density as a function of reduced field h ($H/H_{irr}$) using the Dew-Hughes' scaling law shows that both the 400 nm- and the 600 nm-thick films have double pinning mechanisms while the other films have a single pinning mechanism. These results indicate that the self-assembled property of BSO result in different role as pinning centers with different thickness.

  • $MgB_2$ thin films with superior superconducting properties are very promising for superconducting magnets, electronic devices and coated conductor electric power applications. A clear understanding of flux pinning mechanism in $MgB_2$ films could be a big aid in improving the performance of $MgB_2$ by the enhancement of $J_c$. The fabrication advancement and the understanding of flux pinning mechanism of $MgB_2$ thin and thick films fabricated by using hybrid physical-chemical vapor deposition (HPCVD) are reviewed. The distinct kind of $MgB_2$ films, such as single-crystal like $MgB_2$ thin films, $MgB_2$ epitaxial columnar thick films, and a-axis-oriented $MgB_2$ films are included for flux pinning mechanism investigation. Various attempts made by researchers to improve further the flux pinning property and $J_c$ performance by means of doping in $MgB_2$ thin films by using HPCVD are also summarized.

  • The coercivity mechanism in permanent magnets was analyzed according to the effects of domain nucleation and domain wall pinning. The coercivity mechanism of a TbCo thin film with high perpendicular magnetic anisotropy was considered in terms of the local inhomogeneity in the thin film. The initial magnetization curves of the TbCo thin films demonstrated domain wall pinning to be the main contributor to the coercivity mechanism than domain nucleation. Based on the coercivity model proposed by Kronmuller et al., the inhomogeneity size acting as a domain wall pinning site was determined. Using the measured values of perpendicular anisotropy constant ($K_u$), saturation magnetization ($M_s$), and coercivity ($H_c$), the inhomogeneity size estimated in a TbCo thin film with high coercivity was approximately 9 nm.

  • The electromagnetic effect observed in a BiSrCaCuO superconductor was studied. The electromagnetic properties of a $Ag_2O$ doped BiSrCaCuO superconductor and an undoped superconductor were evaluated to investigate the contribution of the pinning effect. It was confirmed experimentally that a large amount of magnetic flux was trapped in the $Ag_2O$ doped BiSrCaCuO than that in the undoped one, indicating that the pinning centers of magnetic flux are related closely to the occurrence mechanism of magnetic phenomena. It was considered that by adding $Ag_2O$, the area where normal conduction takes place increases and the magnetic flux penetrating through the sample increases. It also was considered that $Ag_2O$ acts to increase pinning centers of magnetic flux.

  • Superconducting properties of thin film MgB2 superconductors irradiated with 45 MeV ${\alpha}$-particle beam were studied. After the irradiation, enhancement of the critical current density and pinning force was observed, scaling close to strong pinning formula. Double logarithmic plots of the maximum pinning force density with irreversible magnetic field show a power law behavior close to carbon-doped MgB2 film or polycrystals. Variation of normalized pinning force density in the reduced magnetic field suggests scaling formulas for strong pinning mechanism like planar defects. We also observed a rapid decay of critical current density as the vortex lattice constant decreases, due to the strong interaction between vortices and increasing magnetic field.

  • We have studied the $TiO_2$ doping effects on the flux pinning behavior of an $MgB_2$ superconductor synthesized by the in-situ solid-state reaction. From the field-cooled and zero-field-cooled temperature dependences of magnetization, the reversible-irreversible transition of $TiO_2$-doped $MgB_2$ was determined in the H-T diagram (the temperature dependence of upper critical magnetic field and irreversibility line). For comparison, the similar measurements are also obtained from SiC-doped $MgB_2$. The critical current density was estimated from the width of hysteresis loops in the framework of Bean's model at different temperatures. The obtained results manifest that nano-scale $TiO_2$ inclusions served as effective pinning centers and lead to the enhanced upper critical field and critical current density. It was concluded that the grain boundary pinning mechanism was realized in a $TiO_2$-doped $MgB_2$ superconductor.

  • The YBaCuO superconducting bulks were prepared by the thermal diffusion process involving the peritectic reaction to investigate the effect on microstructure and superconductivity. All the diffused YBaCuO could be successively separated from superconducting 123 phase by applying the thermal diffusion process. Electromagnetic properties of treated and untreated YBaCuO superconductor were evaluated to investigate the pinning effect. It was confirmed experimentally that a large amount of magnetic flux was trapped in the thermal treated superconducting bulk than that in the untreated one, indicating that the pinning centers of magnetic flux are related closely to the occurrence mechanism of the magnetic effect.

  • Suspension effect has been studied by using superconductor of BiPbSrCaCuO ceramics containing $Ag_2O$. It has been cleared that $Ag_2O$ acts as pinning center which plays an important role to the suspension effect. Magnetic repulsive force which affects a superconductor located in magnetic flux from toroidal magnet has been investigated. It has been concluded that the suspension effect arises from the interaction between the pinning effect and the diamagnetic effect.

  • Technical investigation to figure out the problems arising during in-situ heating electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis inside scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was carried out. EBSD patterns were successfully acquired up to $830^{\circ}C$ without degradation of EBSD pattern quality in steels. Several technical problems such as image drift and surface microstructure pinning were taking place during in-situ experiments. Image drift problem was successfully prevented in constant current supplying mode. It was revealed that the surface pinning problem was resulted from the $TiO_2$ oxide particle formation during heating inside SEM chamber. Surface pinning phenomenon was fairly reduced by additional platinum and carbon multi-layer coating before in-situ heating experiment, furthermore was perfectly prevented by improvement of vacuum level of SEM chamber via leakage control. Plane view in-situ observation provides better understanding on the overall feature of recrystallization phenomena and cross sectional in-situ observation provides clearer understanding on the recrystallization mechanism.

  • $MgB_2$ doped with $TiO_2$ was prepared by the in-situ solid state reaction to study the effects of $TiO_2$ dopant on the flux pinning behavior of $MgB_2$ superconductor. From the field-cooled and the zero-field-cooled temperature dependences of magnetization, the realms of vortex-glass and vortex-liquid states of $TiO_2$-doped $MgB_2$ were determined in the H-T diagram (the temperature dependence of upper critical magnetic field and irreversibility line). The critical current density was estimated from the width of hysteresis loops in the framework of Beam's model at different temperatures. The results indicate that nano-scale $TiO_2$ inclusions play a role of the effective pinning centers and lead to the enhanced upper critical field and critical current density. It is suggested that the grain-boundary pinning mechanism is realized in $TiO_2$-doped $MgB_2$ superconductor.
