The problem of laterally loaded piles is particularly a complex soil-structure interaction problem. The flexural stresses developed due to the combined action of axial load and bending moment must be evaluated in a realistic and rational manner for safe and economical design of pile foundation. The paper reports the finite element analysis of pile groups. For this purpose simplified models along the lines similar to that suggested by Desai et al. (1981) are used for idealizing various elements of the foundation system. The pile is idealized one dimensional beam element, pile cap as two dimensional plate element and the soil as independent closely spaced linearly elastic springs. The analysis takes into consideration the effect of interaction between pile cap and soil underlying it. The pile group is considered to have been embedded in cohesive soil. The parametric study is carried out to examine the effect of pile spacing, pile diameter, number of piles and arrangement of pile on the responses of pile group. The responses considered include the displacement at top of pile group and bending moment in piles. The results obtained using the simplified approach of the F.E. analysis are further compared with the results of the complete 3-D F.E. analysis published earlier and fair agreement is observed in the either result.
In the design of a piled raft, the axial resistance is offered by the raft and group piles acting on the same supporting ground soils. As a consequence, pile - soil - raft and pile - soil interactions, occurring by stress and displacement duplication with pile and raft loading conditions, act as a key element changing resistances of the raft and group piles. In this study, a series of centrifuge model tests have been performed to compare the axial behavior of group pile and raft with that of a piled raft (having 16 component piles with an array of $4{\times}4$) in sands with different relative densities. The test results revealed that the increase of settlement resistance occurs separately with settlement by group pile - soil interactions. The axial resistance of group piles (at piled raft) increases by group pile - raft (pile cap) interactions and that of raft (at piled raft) decreases by group pile - raft (pile cap) interactions.
This paper describes the results for a numerical analysis of'single piles and pile oops in clayey soils subjected to monotonous lateral loading using the ABAQUS finite element software. The investigated variables in this study include free head and embedded capped single piles, pile diameter (1.0 m, 0.5 m), pile length (7.0 m, 10.0 m), and pile groups. The 1$\times$3 pile group was selected to investigate the individual pile and group lateral resistance, the distribution of the resistance among the piles, the effects of lateral stresses in front of and on the sides of the piles, and the effect of a cap on the lateral resistance of the leading pile. The soil was modeled using Cam-clay constitutive relationship and the pile was considered as a elastic circular concrete pile. The results show that the size of the cap influences lateral capacity of sin pile. The results also show in pile groups, the pile-soil-pile interaction and the cap effect the resistance in the leading pile, and the p-multiplier for the leading pile of greater than 1.0 was able to be obtained.
In this study, 1 g shaking table group pile tests were performed for various conditions of subgrade and pile spacing. The pile spacing was changed from three to seven times of pile diameters. It could be confirmed that the dynamic p-y curves for the group pile observed as the results of a series of shaking table tests show difference according to the pile spacing, the pile location within the pile group, the relative density of subgrade and the excess pore pressure during earthquake. The dynamic p-multipliers were calculated by comparing the dynamic p-y backbone curves of a single pile suggested by Yang (2009) and dynamic p-y curves for the group pile. Dynamic p-multiplier values overall increase as the relative density of subgrade and amplitude of input acceleration increase. The dynamic group pile effect was neglected, if the pile spacing was seven times as large as pile diameters. It was found that the exisiting p-multiplier values suggested by various researchers for the static and dynamic loading, and the values recommended by globally used specifications show difference with the test results by up to 0.7 (approximately 70%). Therefore, the dynamic p-multipliers were newly suggested according to the pile spacing and the relative density of subgrade using the test results.
This study investigates the behavior of group of tapered and cylindrical piles. The bearing capacities of groups of tapered and cylindrical piles are computed and compared. Modeling of group of piles in this study is conducted in sand using three-dimensional finite element software. For this purpose, total bearing capacity of each group is firstly calculated using the load-displacement curve under specific load and common techniques. Then, the model of group of piles is reloaded under this calculated capacity to find group settlements, stress states on the lateral surfaces of group block, efficiency of group and etc. In order to calculate the efficiency of each group, single tapered and cylindrical piles are modeled separately. Comparison for both tapered and cylindrical group of piles with same volume is conducted and a relation to predict tapered pile group efficiency is developed. A parametric study is also performed by changing parameters such as tapered angle, angle of internal friction of sand, dilatancy angle of soil and coefficient of lateral earth pressure to find their influences on single pile and pile group behavior.

The compressive capacity and the soil plugging resistance of single open-ended pipe pile were completely decreased in the previous study on the behavior of shorter single pile during simulated seaquake induced by the vertical component of earthquake. But the capacity of single open-ended pipe pile with greater penetration and the capacity of piles group with shorter penetration were expected to be stable after seaquake motion. In this study, first, 2-piles or 4-piles are driven into the calibration chamber included in saturated fine medium sand with several simulated penetrations, and the compressive load test for each piles group was performed. Then, about 95 % compressive load of the ultimate capacity was applied on the pile head during the simulated seaquake motion. Finally, In confirm the reduction of pile capacity during the simulated seaquake motion, the compressive load test for each single pile or piles group after seaquake motion was performed. During the simulated seaquake, the compressive capacity of open-ended pipe piles with greater penetration ( 〉about 27 m) was not degraded even in deep sea deeper than 220 m and soil plug within open-ended pipe pile installed in deep sea was stable after seaquake motion. Also, in the case of 2-piles or 4-pile groups, the compressive capacity after seaquake motion was not degraded at all regardless of pile penetration depth beneath seabed, sea water depth and seaquake frequency.
In this study, the stability of group piles installed in deep sea to the seaquake was studied by performing the calibration chamber model tests for open-ended pipe piles, grouted piles under soil plug and close-ended piles installed in the simulated deep sea. For each case (a single pile, 2-pile and 4-pile groups), series of seaquake tests were performed. While, during the simulated seaquake, the compressive capacity of the single open-ended pile depended on pile penetration depth(=7m), were found to be stable. But, a single grouted pile with penetration depth of 13m kept "mobility" state, the one with penetration depth of 20m was stable and grouted pile groups with penetration depth of 7m were stable regardless of pile penetration depth. By grouting soil plug of open-ended piles and soil under the pile toe of open-ended pipe piles installed in the deep sea, failure of soil plugging was prevented. Thus, close-ended piles were more stable than open-ended pile against the seaquake motionake motion.
Using the nonlinear load transfer function for pile side soil and the linear load transfer function for pile end soil, a combined approach of the incremental load transfer matrix method and the approximate differential equation solution method is presented for the nonlinear analysis of interaction between flexible pile group and soil. The proposed method provides an effective approach for the solution of the nonlinear interaction between flexible pile group under rigid platform and surrounding soil. To verify the accuracy of the proposed method, a static load test for a nine-pile group under a rigid platform is carried out. The finite element analysis is also conducted for comparison purposes. It is found that the results from the proposed method match very well with those from the experimental test and are better in comparison with the finite element method.
A coupled three-dimensional pile group analysis method (YSGroup) was developed considering nonlinear pile head stiffness matrices and compared with other analytical methods (elastic displacement method, Group 6.0 and FBPier 3.0). In this method, a pile cap was modelled by four-node flat shell element, a pier was modelled using 3 dimensional beam element, and individual piles were modelled as beam-column elements. Through the comparative studies on a piled pie. subjected to lateral loads in linear soil, it was found that present method (YSGroup), elastic displacement method and Group 6.0 gave similar results of lateral pile head displacement, but FBPier 3.0 was estimated to show somewhat larger displacements than those from the three methods. Displacements of superstructure (pier), including nonlinear soil behavior, could be estimated by present method (YSGroup) and FBPier 3.0 because these two methods modelled the superstructure directly by finite element techniques. It was found that pile groups in pinned pile head condition had a tendency to cause excessive rotation of the pile cap.

This paper presents of effect of tunneling on pile group of being operated bridge using Three-dimensional numerical modeling to study the effect of coordination of tunneling location under discontinuous group pile. In order to find idealistic tunneling location that causes settlement, change of stress on the piles and movement of soil at a minimum, a fully coupled 3D finite element model is adopted. The study contains pile settlement, axial force on each piles in the group, axial displacement of piles and soil behaviour caused by tunneling. Based on the result some insights into the pile behavior due to tunneling obtained from numerical analysis were mentioned and discussed.
