  • New construction for public transport in congested urban areas will involve tunnel construction adjacent to existing building or bridge foundations and services due to the lack of surface space. Therefore, careful assessment of the important underground structure-soil-tunnelling interaction is relatively new, currently only limited information is available. In this study, the authors carried out FE analysis and the laboratory model test using the photogrammetric technique and suggested the influence zones associated with the normalised pile tip settlement during new tunnel construction.

  • This paper presents a preliminary study to monitor the lateral behavior of pile foundation using multiplexed fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors. In the preliminary study, an 1.7 meter long cantilever beam with the shape of square hollow box was fabricated and tested under the static loading. Four FBG sensors were multiplexed in a single optical fiber and installed into the top and bottom of the cantilever beam. The strains are directly measured from FBG sensors followed by curvature calculations based on the plane section assumption. Vertical deflections are then estimated using the regression analyses based on the geometric relationships. It has been found that excellent correlation with conventional sensing system was observed. The success of the test encourages the use of the FBG sensing system as a monitoring system for pile foundations. However, further consideration should be given in the case of the sensor malfunction for the practical purpose.

  • This paper is the research result about centrifuge model experiments of investigating the behavior of bridge abutment on the sloped ground. Ground condition of the studied site was the bridge abutment with pile foundation adjacent to the slope. The pile foundations was supported on the soft rocks covered with the embankment. Evaluating the behavior of such a complicate ground and structure conditions was not easy so that the centrifuge modelling was performed to find the overall behavior of them. Layout of centrifuge model experiment was simplified to simulate easily the actual behavior of very complicate site condition. Construction process in field such as ground excavation for footing foundation, installation of piles, placement of footing and bridge abutment, backfilling and surcharge loading eas duplicated in the centrifuge model experiment. Consequently, the stability of the piled bridge abutment adjacent to the slope of embankment was evaluated throughout centrifuge modelling.

  • The piled raft foundation Is an innovative design concept to reduce both the maximum settlement and differential settlements caused by concentrated building loads and load eccentricities, and also to reduce the bending moments of the raft. The main concern given in the design of piled raft foundations is proper judgments both of relative proportions of loads carried by the raft and piles, and of the effect of the pile support on the maximum and differential settlements In the present study, the piled raft foundation used in the foundation system of Richensia Building at Youido, Seoul is introduced and is carried out analyzing the results of field tests such as plate load tests, large plate load test, pile load test, and piled raft load test.

Analysis of pile load distribution and ground behaviour depending on vertical offset between pile tip and tunnel crown in sand through laboratory model test (실내모형시험을 통한 사질토 지반에서 군말뚝과 터널의 수직 이격거리에 따른 하중분포 및 지반거동 분석)

  • Tunnelling in urban areas, it is essential to understand existing structure-tunnel interactive behavior. Serviced structures in the city are supported by pile foundation, since they are certainly effected due to tunnelling. In this research, thus, pile load distribution and ground behavior due to tunnelling below grouped pile were investigated using laboratory model test. Grouped pile foundations were considered as 2, 3 row pile and offsets (between pile tip and tunnel crown: 0.5D, 1.0D and 1.5D for generalization to tunnel diameter, D means tunnel diameter). Soil in the tank for laboratory model test was formed by loose sand (relative density: Dr = 30%) and strain gauges were attached to the pile inner shaft to estimate distribution of axial force. Also, settlements of grouped pile and adjacent ground surface depending on the offsets were measured by LVDT and dial gauge, respectively. Tunnelling-induced deformation of underground was measured by close range photogrammetric technique. Numerical analysis was conducted to analyze and compare with results from laboratory model test and close range photogrammetry. For expression of tunnel excavation, the concept of volume loss was applied in this study, it was 1.5%. As a result from this study, far offset, the smaller reduction of pile axial load and was appeared trend of settlement was similar among them. Particulary, ratio of pile load and settlement reduction were larger when the offset is from 0.5D to 1.0D than from 1.0D to 1.5D.

Evaluation of p-y Curves of Piles in Soft Deposits by 3-Dimensional Numerical Analysis (3차원 수치해석을 이용한 점성토 지반의 p-y 곡선 산정)

  • The p-y curve has been used to design pile foundations subjected to lateral loading. Although the p-y curve has a large influence on the pile lateral behavior, p-y curves have not been clearly suggested. In this study, the p-y curve of clay was evaluated for drilled shafts in marine deposits by using 3-dimensional numerical analyses. First, the optimization study was performed to properly determine boundary extent, mesh size, and interface stiffness. The numerical modeling in the study was verified by comparing the calculated and the pile loading test results. Then, the p-y curves of single and group piles were evaluated from the parametric study. The selected parameters were pile diameter, pile Young's modulus and pile head fixed condition for a single pile, and pile spacing for group piles. Finally, the p-multiplier was evaluated by comparing the p-y curves of a single pile and group piles. As a result, the p-multiplier at pile spacing of 3D was 0.83, 0.67 and 0.78 for the front, middle, and back row piles, respectively, and showed values similar to those of O'Neill and Reese (1999). For the pile group with pile spacing larger than 60, the group effect can be ignorable.

Drilled Shaft Designs and Constructions using Pile Load Tests at the Government-Financed Section of Incheon Bridge (재하시험을 활용한 인천대교 국고구간 현장타설말뚝의 설계와 시공)

  • Incheon Bridge which will be the world's 5th long cable-stayed bridge in 2009 has been built under the management by Korea Highway Corporation. Incheon Bridge consists of several special-featured bridges and construction sections are divided into two groups, the private investment section with the foreign concessionaire and the government-financed section. 8 pile load tests were performed to investigate the behavior of rock-embedded large-diameter drilled shafts at both sections. Among these, 4 tests at the government-financed section have been utilized to adjust the detailed designs that were carried out individually as well as to find the actual bearing capacity of the ground prior to the commencement of constructions under the joint control of all contractors. Comprehensive procedures of the design and the construction of foundations using pile load tests were introduced.

  • An important class of problems in the field of geotechnical engineering may be analyzed with the aid of a simple integro-differential equation. Behavior of "rigid" piles(say concrete piles), "deformable" piles(say gravel piles), pile groups, pile-raft foundations, heavily reinforced earth, flow within circular silos and down drag on cylindrical structures (for example the crusher unit of a mineral processing complex) are the type of situations that can be handled by this type of equation. The equation under consideration has the form; $$\frac{{\partial}w(r,\;z)}{{\partial}z}+f(z){\int}^z_0g({\xi})(\frac{{\partial}^2w(r,\;{\xi})}{{\partial}r^2}+\frac{1}{r}\frac{{\partial}w(r,\;{\xi})}{{\partial}r})d{\xi}+h(r,\;z)=0$$ where w(r, z) is the vertical displacement of a soil particle expressed as a function of the polar cylindrical space coordinates (r, z) and the symbols f, g and h represent soil properties and the loading conditions. The merit of the analysis is its simplicity (both in concept and in application) and the ease with which it can be expressed in a computer code. In the present paper the analysis is applied to investigate the behavior of a single rigid pile to bedrock. The emphasis, however, is placed on developing the equation, the numerical techique used in its evaluation and validation of the technique, hereafter called the ID technique, against a formal program, CRISP, which uses the FEM.

Simplified Limit Solutions for the Inclined Load Capacity of a Dynamically Installed Pile in Soft Clay

  • Offshore renewable energy resources are attractive alternatives in addressing the nation's clean energy policies because of the high demand for electricity in the coastal region. As a large portion of potential resources is in deep and farther water, economically competitive floating systems have been developed. Despite the advancement of floating technologies, the high capital cost remains a primary barrier to go ahead offshore renewable energy projects. The dynamically installed piles (DIPs) have been considered one of the most economical pile concepts due to their simple installation method, resulting in cost and time-saving. Nevertheless, applications to real fields are limited because of uncertainties and underestimated load capacity. Thus, this study suggests the appropriate analytical approach to estimate the inclined load capacity of the DIPs by using the upper bound plastic limit analysis (PLA) method. The validity of the PLA under several conditions is demonstrated through comparison to the finite element (FE) method. The PLA was performed to understand how flukes, soil profiles, and load inclinations can affect the inclined load capacity and to provide reliable evaluations of the total resistance of the DIPs. The studies show that PLA can be a useful framework for evaluating the inclined load capacity of the DIPs under undrained conditions.

Effect of groundwater level change on piled raft foundation in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam using 3D-FEM

  • Ground subsidence, which is a current concern that affects piled raft foundations, has occurred at a high rate in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam, due primarily to groundwater pumping for water supply. In this study, the groundwater level (GWL) change affect on a piled raft foundation was investigated based on the three-dimensional finite element method (3D-FEM) using the PLAXIS 3D software. The GWL change due to global groundwater pumping and dewatering were simulated in PLAXIS 3D based on the GWL reduction and consolidation. Settlement and the pile axial force of the piled raft foundation in Ho Chi Minh subsoil were investigated based on the actual design and the proposed optimal case. The actual design used the piled foundation concept, while the optimal case applied a pile spacing of 6D using a piled raft concept to reduce the number of piles, with little increased settlement. The results indicated that the settlement increased with the GWL reduction, caused by groundwater pumping and dewatering. The subsidence started to affect the piled raft foundation 2.5 years after construction for the actual design and after 3.4 years for the optimal case due to global groundwater pumping. The pile's axial force, which was affected by negative skin friction, increased during that time.
